SeaLife is introducing a Lens Adapter for their SportDiver underwater Smartphone housing.

67mm and 52mm threaded lenses may be mounted to the SportDiver smartphone housing allowing the underwater photographer to expand their macro and wide-angle creativity. The precision lens adapter, constructed with hard anodized machined aluminum and stainless-steel hardware, mounts directly to the SportDiver’s lens port for a secure, solid fit. The adapter allows for easy horizontal and vertical lens movement adjustments to center the lens over the phone’s intended shooting lens.

Sealife SportDiver Lens Adapter

The adapter comes threaded with a 67mm opening, for larger diameter lenses. A 52mm threaded ring is included for attaching smaller 52 mm lenses. For other lenses, a step-down ring may be obtained through dive photo or photography shops.

SeaLife is also introducing a 52mm 4-element 0.7x wide angle lens that fits onto the Lens Adapter; the new SeaLife 52mm Wide-Angle Dome lens (Item SL054) increases the phone lens shooting angle by 43%, allowing for a closer shooting distance and improved edge sharpness.

Sealife SportDiver Lens Adapter

With the multitude of underwater lenses and a wide variety of smartphone lenses available, underwater photographers now have virtually unlimited choices available to them. SeaLife recommends using wide-angle lenses with optical magnification between 0.5x and 0.75x magnification, which allows closer shooting distances while fitting the subject into the image frame. SeaLife also recommends using macro lenses with diopter correct between 3x and 10x. Macro lenses will allow you to get closer to the subject while maintaining image sharpness. Due to the wide variety of smartphone phone lenses in the market, some lens settings may not be compatible.

The lens adapter will be available at Sealife’s USA network of dealers by January 2024.

In a plea for public assistance, local authorities are seeking witnesses to come forward in the wake of a tragic incident on the Central Coast that claimed the life of a 51-year-old man. The victim passed away in hospital after being rescued from the water at Terrigal Haven last month.

On the evening of Friday, October 20, 2023, emergency services responded to distress calls reporting an unconscious man in the water at approximately 5:45 pm. According to police reports, the man had been engaged in scuba diving with a friend when adverse weather conditions prompted their return to shore. During an attempt to ascend the rocks, the 51-year-old was struck by a powerful wave, causing him to slip, hit his head, and fall back into the water.

A Good Samaritan, identified as an unidentified surfer, courageously entered the water on his surfboard, successfully retrieving the injured man. Once ashore, CPR was administered until the arrival of paramedics from NSW Ambulance. Despite immediate efforts to stabilize him, the victim was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in critical condition. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries a few days later, as confirmed by hospital authorities who subsequently notified the police.

Brisbane Water Police District detectives have taken charge of the investigation on behalf of the Coroner. They are now seeking the public’s help in identifying the heroic surfer who played a pivotal role in rescuing the victim. Detectives believe that this individual may possess crucial information to aid their ongoing inquiries.

As the investigation progresses, anyone with pertinent information is strongly encouraged to reach out to Gosford Police Station or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

In the interest of maintaining confidentiality, individuals can also submit information through the Crime Stoppers website: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. The public is reminded to refrain from reporting information via NSW Police social media pages. The authorities assure that all provided information will be treated with the utmost discretion.

SeaLife® Introduces New 6”/15cm Wide Angle Dome Lens for SportDiver Smartphone Housing https://www.thescubanews.com/2023/11/10/sealife-introduces-new-6-15cm-wide-angle-dome-lens-for-sportdiver-smartphone-housing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sealife-introduces-new-6-15cm-wide-angle-dome-lens-for-sportdiver-smartphone-housing https://www.thescubanews.com/2023/11/10/sealife-introduces-new-6-15cm-wide-angle-dome-lens-for-sportdiver-smartphone-housing/#respond Fri, 10 Nov 2023 10:32:22 +0000 https://www.thescubanews.com/?p=32882 SeaLife, the leading maker of underwater imaging gear, has introduced a new Wide Angle Dome Lens for their popular SportDiver underwater smartphone housing that increases the phone’s camera lens field-of [...]]]>

SeaLife, the leading maker of underwater imaging gear, has introduced a new Wide Angle Dome Lens for their popular SportDiver underwater smartphone housing that increases the phone’s camera lens field-of view by 43% and allows photographers to get closer to the subject while fitting everything into the image frame.

The new dome lens mounts directly to the SportDiver housing’s lens port without any lens adapter. The 0.65x dome lens requires no skill, training, or adjustment; simply mount it and shoot. Split shots that split the topside view with the undersea view are especially easy. There’s a safety lanyard included to keep the lens with the housing should it get bumped off.

SportDiver 6" Wide Angle Lens

The 6” Wide Angle Dome Lens design uses high-grade acrylic optics arranged in a 2-element/2- group array that delivers crisp edge-to-edge sharpness. “This is a very versatile lens that significantly improves the phone lens’ performance and allows for some creative underwater images and video” says Bjorn Harms, SeaLife’s Vice President of Product Development.

The lens has a 15.6mm film-equivalent effective focal length when used, for example, with the SeaLife SportDiver and the iPhone 15 Pro’s 24mm “Ultrawide” camera lens. The lens is waterproof to 130ft/40m and is positively buoyant. The new 6”/15cm Dome Lens fits all SeaLife SportDiver housings.

SportDiver 6" Wide Angle Lens

The lens includes a rotatable sunshade built around the optics to help control stray sunlight. The new lens is a “wet lens” and easily attaches and removes underwater, the inner lens chambers are air-filled, and the lens is therefore buoyant. A lanyard is included and prevents the lens from accidentally detaching when bumped or in rougher water conditions. The 6”/15cm Dome Lens weighs 17.4 ounces (493 grams).

The 6”/15cm Dome Lens will be available in January 2024.

A scuba diver reportedly found himself in a challenging situation off the coast of Miami, left treading water for approximately half an hour after the dive boat he was on started taking on water. The incident occurred near Sunny Isles Beach on a Wednesday morning, according to the Coast Guard.

The unnamed diver was left stranded when the vessel began experiencing difficulties and had to return to shore without him, as reported by the Miami Herald. Following a call received by the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue around 9:30 a.m., a fire rescue boat promptly picked up the diver at 10 a.m. Fortunately, the diver was safely returned to the Haulover Marina Center and did not require any medical attention.

A video captured by WSVN showcased the diver swimming towards the rescue boat, located approximately 600 yards offshore

When it comes to scuba diving, every piece of equipment plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe and enjoyable underwater experience. While divers often focus on high-tech gadgets and life-supporting gear, one humble component often goes unnoticed—the scuba mask strap. This seemingly simple accessory is, in fact, an unsung hero of the deep, providing comfort, security, and a better overall diving experience.

Comfort and Fit:

One of the primary reasons divers should pay attention to their scuba mask straps is comfort. Imagine exploring vibrant coral reefs or encountering mesmerizing marine life while constantly adjusting an uncomfortable strap—talk about a distraction! A well-fitted mask strap ensures that the mask stays snugly in place without causing unnecessary pressure or discomfort on the diver’s face. With the right strap, divers can focus on the breathtaking underwater world instead of readjusting their gear.

Security and Seal:

A secure seal is paramount for any scuba diver, and the mask strap plays a crucial role in maintaining this seal. A properly adjusted strap ensures that the mask stays in position, creating a watertight seal around the face. This not only prevents water from entering the mask but also helps in maintaining optimal buoyancy and reducing the risk of mask squeeze—a painful condition caused by pressure changes underwater.

Scuba Mask Straps

Customization and Style:

Scuba mask straps are not just functional; they also offer an opportunity for personalization and style. Divers can choose from a variety of materials, colors, and designs to match their preferences and personality. Customizing your mask strap not only adds a touch of individuality but also makes it easier to identify your gear in a sea of similar equipment.

Ease of Use and Quick Adjustments:

Modern scuba mask straps often come with user-friendly features that allow for quick and easy adjustments. Whether it’s a quick-release buckle or an adjustable strap with a simple pull mechanism, these innovations make it effortless for divers to fine-tune their mask fit underwater. The ability to make on-the-fly adjustments ensures a hassle-free dive, even in changing conditions.

Scuba Mask Straps

Preventing Hair Tangles:

For divers with longer hair, the struggle of dealing with tangled hair after a dive is all too familiar. A well-designed mask strap can help minimize this issue by keeping hair neatly in place. Some straps are specifically designed to prevent hair snags, allowing divers to resurface with their locks intact and tangle-free.

Conclusion:

While often overlooked, scuba mask straps are indispensable components of a diver’s gear. Their role in ensuring comfort, security, and customization cannot be overstated. Divers who invest time in selecting the right mask strap are likely to enjoy a more enjoyable and stress-free underwater experience. So, the next time you gear up for a dive, give your mask strap the attention it deserves—after all, it might just be the key to unlocking the wonders of the deep.

The Maritime Museum of British Columbia’s Remembrance Day Human Library program will run on the afternoon of November 11th, 2023, from 1:30 – 3:30 PM, with admission by donation. The Museum will otherwise be closed to admissions that day for the statutory holiday.

About the program

This Human Library program is an opportunity to talk to two service members with unique service histories and trades. In group conversations, explore memories, stories, and technical expertise.

“The idea of a Human Library is that instead of books, visitors in groups get to talk to multiple people with specific lived experiences, each for a set amount of time before beginning a new conversation,” said Events and Development Manager Anya Zanko.

Two service members, CPO1 Jonathon Sorensen and Lt(N) Michelle Scott, will join participants for this program, and run 2 parallel sessions of 30-minute conversations; there will be a break in between each session.

Admission to this program is by donation. We will have hot chocolate and a break between conversations.

A swimming area in Florida has been temporarily closed following two incidents where individuals were bitten on the head by an alligator, as reported by a local news outlet.

A professional trapper, who spoke to WCJB, successfully captured a nine-foot alligator from the waters of the Alexander Springs Recreation Area located within the Ocala National Forest this past Sunday.

Both of the bite victims were scuba divers, with one being attacked on Wednesday and the other on Sunday. The area had previously experienced a temporary closure on Wednesday but was subsequently reopened. However, in response to the recent alligator-related incidents, it has now been closed again “until further notice,” according to WCJB.

The U.S. Forest Service announced the necessity for this temporary closure on Wednesday, emphasizing that it was a measure taken for public safety. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission promptly conducted an investigation and responded to the situation.

On April 6, 2024, the Philippines Aggressor II™ will embark on her inaugural “Tubbataha Reef” itinerary charters, setting sail from Puerto Princesa, Philippines. These exclusive seven and ten-night excursions will take divers to the Tubbataha Reefs National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and will continue through June 2024. As June arrives, the yacht will then journey to the Visayan Sea, offering guests a unique transition charter that allows them to explore both Tubbataha and the Visayas region.

From June through February, the Philippines Aggressor II™, along with her sister ship, the Philippines Aggressor®, will be exploring dive sites near Cebu, Malapascua, Apo, and Bohol Islands during the “Best of Visayas” and “Visayas South” itineraries. Visayas charters will typically depart from Mactan, with special occasions occasionally seeing departures from Dumaguete.

Aggressor Adventures Chairman and CEO Wayne Brown expressed his excitement about this extraordinary addition, stating, “With such high demand for this extraordinary destination, we are pleased to launch a second yacht in the Philippines. The diversity of the marine life in the Philippines is simply unparalleled. Manta rays, thresher sharks, whale sharks, and other pelagics make your adrenaline levels surge, while the profound macro creatures provide awesome photo subjects. The Visayan and Sulu Seas are home to pygmy seahorses, frogfish, ornate ghost pipefish, and countless other-worldly, tiny, marine creatures.”

Crafted by Almaroon Yacht Builders, the new Philippines Aggressor II™ yacht is a remarkable vessel, measuring 140 feet (43 meters) in length and 26 feet (8 meters) in width, with four spacious decks. Among its top features are five upper-level staterooms with balconies that offer panoramic views of South Pacific sunsets. The yacht also boasts eight deluxe lower-level staterooms featuring twin berths and ample personal storage. All staterooms come equipped with a media player, climate control, and ensuite full bathrooms. Additional amenities include a hot tub and wet bar on the fly bridge, an indoor lounge, a restaurant serving chef-prepared meals, and state-of-the-art scuba facilities that include Nitrox tank fills and two dive tenders.

The narrative of the ships, which is a crucial aspect of the Halifax Explosion, is largely missing from the many excellent books that have been written about it. That day, there were far more than 150 boats in the harbour. We have very little knowledge of them. The enormous task of identifying and narrating the histories of the ships and the sailors who manned them is taken on by The Dangerous Harbour: Revealing the Unknown Ships and Wrecks of the Halifax Explosion.

Read The Scuba News Canada article on Atlantic’s Last Stop Courage, Folly, and Lies in the White Star Line’s Worst Disaster Before Titanic

This is Bob Chaulk’s sixth book about the seas and sailors of Eastern Canada, drawing from more than 1,200 dives in Halifax Harbour. The author of Atlantic’s Last Stop: Courage, Folly, and Lies in the White Star Line’s Worst Disaster Before the Titanic, Bob is a well-known writer and speaker on nautical history. He recently came back from Liverpool, United Kingdom, where he told the tale of Nova Scotia’s worst shipwreck in the port where the Atlantic sailed.

About the Author Robert B Chaulk

Robert G. Chaulk is the SS Atlantic Heritage Park’s historian and a recognized expert on the SS Atlantic accident. He is the author of five volumes about the maritime history of Atlantic Canada. He co-authored SS Atlantic: The White Star Line’s First Disaster at Sea, which received three literary honours, with Greg Cochkanoff. Bob is an ardent scuba diver who has done over fifty dives on the Atlantic wreck, giving him a unique viewpoint on this significant piece of Canadian history.

Every year this annual event commemorates the sinking of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald and the total loss of the 29 crew members aboard on November 10, 1975. It is also a time to reflect on the memory of all lives lost on the Great Lakes.

The lighthouse, fog signal building, and visitor center will be open for visitors. Guides will welcome visitors and provide historic site and shipwreck information. Throughout the day, visitors can watch a film about Edmund Fitzgerald in the visitor center, or join a guided tour exploring the history of Fitzgerald’s final voyage.

At 4:15 pm, the lighthouse will temporarily close while the names of the crew are read to the tolling of a ship’s bell, with a rendition of the Naval Hymn. Following the ceremony, the beacon will be lit, and the tower will be open again to tour until close at 6 pm.

Be sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp as the grounds and trails are unlit. The weather is unpredictable, please dress accordingly.

The event will be streamed on Split Rock’s Facebook Page and the Minnesota Historical Society’s YouTube channel.

We have a fantastic week planned for May 13-20, 2024, staying at the 4-Star All Inclusive Bahia Principe Grand Coba Resort and diving in Akumal, Mexico.

Akumal is one of our favourite scuba diving spots. It combines a lovely reef/wall experience with epic cenote diving in a stunning setting. The Akumal reef is incredible, with turtles, coral reefs, and marine life, as well as world-class cenote diving led by our favourite Cave Explorer, Matt Mandziuk, and friends.

The month of May is ideal for diving in this area. Akumal literally translates to “Land of Turtles,” and the turtle breeding season begins in May. Spring and summer are the best times to visit the Cenotes.

A sad day for underwater filming projects as The Underwater Studio in Essex, known for its TV and movie filming stages, has recently closed its doors. Operating under the name SWS Marine Services, the company cited insurmountable challenges as the reason for its closure.

In an official statement replacing its website, the Underwater Studio explained that it struggled to recover from the business loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, soaring energy costs, a writers’ and actors’ strike in the United States, and a subsequent decline in bookings contributed to its financial woes. The studio now faces expenses that surpass its income, leading to this unfortunate decision.

The Underwater Studio, founded in Basildon’s Burnt Mills industrial estate in the late 1990s by diver Fred Woodcock and the late Geoff Smith, was a notable institution in the British film and TV industry. Both Woodcock and Smith had extensive experience in the industry, having worked on well-known franchises like James Bond and Jason Bourne. Woodcock remained involved as the diving supervisor, with Glenn Whatley serving as the studio administrator.

A recently opened exhibit on the sunken mysteries of Lake Havasu reminds snorkel and scuba fans of what lies beneath the usually calm waters of the Colorado River.

Lake Havasu is home to some of the best dive sites in Arizona and the Southwest with more than 30 specific dive sites featuring attractions such as shipwrecks, sunken planes, underwater geology and fish habitats.

The Lake Havasu Museum of History at 320 London Bridge Rd. celebrated the grand opening of a new exhibit and scale model presenting the history of Millers Folly, a 60-foot double-decked paddlewheel boat built by locals from spare parts in the city’s early days. It was made of steel pipe, oil drums, a 1949 Ford Engine, a plow wheel, oak paddles, and a world of ingenuity before it was scuttled in 1978 in about 30 feet of water off Site Six, where divers can still view it.

The exhibit runs for the next few months.

After more than 80 years on the seabed, what is probably the wreckage of the British submarine HMS Thistle has been discovered outside Rogaland, Norway

In a groundbreaking revelation, a new shipwreck has been unveiled in the depths of the ocean, shedding light on the secrets hidden beneath the seabed. This remarkable discovery came to fruition during a research expedition under the MAREANO program, which is dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of the underwater world’s biology and geology.

While the submarine wreckage was initially located in the spring, its true identity has now been definitively ascertained during a recent research cruise. This tantalizing revelation leaves us with more questions than answers – is this yet another unknown shipwreck?

When the research cruise was originally planned, the team of scientists noticed peculiar structures on their mapping screens. The MAREANO project is a collaborative endeavor involving the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), and the Norwegian Mapping Authority. Its primary mission is to comprehensively explore the ocean floor. When anomalous structures emerge on their maps, they become irresistible targets for investigation.

Fuelled by an insatiable curiosity, the researchers swiftly initiated a research site to uncover the truth about these enigmatic structures. Were they geological formations or hidden wrecks hitherto unknown to mankind?

“I rarely find myself in the video room during these explorations, but my curiosity was piqued long before our submersible cameras descended into the depths,” confessed senior engineer Kjell Bakkeplass.

As the voyage progressed, the suspicion that this was a hidden shipwreck grew stronger. Astonishingly, this recent cruise had already led to the discovery of four shipwrecks, with only one having been previously documented.

Bakkeplass expressed, “The striking resemblance between the wreck structures we had previously encountered and this newfound discovery is truly remarkable.”

The unveiling of this unidentified shipwreck adds a thrilling new chapter to the ongoing exploration of the ocean’s depths. As scientists continue to delve into the secrets of the seabed, who knows what other remarkable discoveries await?

A diver who had gone missing while exploring the Zenobia shipwreck was discovered lifeless by search and rescue teams within the ship’s confines on Friday. The incident unfolded in the waters off the coast of Larnaca, Cyprus, an area renowned for its popularity among divers.

The discovery was made around 11 a.m. on Friday when a search party located the missing diver in a compartment of the Zenobia ship, which is not frequently visited by divers. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of diving in the area.

The information was confirmed by Commander Andreas Charalambides, who leads the Larnaca search and rescue coordination center. He disclosed that the diver was not found in a restricted section of the ship. According to Charalambides, access to different parts of the wreck primarily depends on the diver’s skills and endurance, leaving room for speculation that the deceased diver might have ended up in that particular area accidentally.

The commander suggested that disorientation, panic, or poor visibility could have prevented the diver from exiting the compartment. He emphasized the unfortunate outcome of the incident, speculating that, based on camera footage provided by another member of the diving group, the diver might have lost track of time.

The deceased diver was reportedly an instructor who had been guiding a couple during the dive. The couple successfully ascended, but the missing diver encountered difficulties. Charalambides noted that the conditions inside the Zenobia wreck are challenging, including limited visibility and difficulties in finding the exit.

The search efforts began at 8 a.m. on Friday, the second day of the operation, following the diver’s descent into the water at 10 a.m. on the previous day. The alarm was raised when the scheduled dive time elapsed, and the missing diver failed to resurface.

Search teams, including divers from the police and the national guard, as well as volunteer groups, scoured the area around the Zenobia shipwreck. Helicopters and boats were deployed to search the sea surface within a wide radius.

Commander Charalambides, when asked about the incident and the fact that the diver was seemingly trapped in the wreck, suggested that restrictions on certain areas of the shipwreck should be considered in the future.

It is worth noting that at least six diver fatalities have been recorded at the Zenobia site since the ship sank in 1980 en route to Syria from Sweden. Recent diving incidents have ignited debates about safety, and a longstanding dispute exists between the wreck’s owner, AAK Larnaca Napa Sea Cruises, and the divers’ association.

The owner has previously claimed that a state of “anarchy and illegality” prevails at the site, while the divers’ association has countered, asserting that the site maintains one of the best safety records worldwide, with its members adhering to all regulations and licensing requirements.

Nicos Nicolaou, the head of the divers’ association, affirmed to the Cyprus Mail that the area witnesses over 30,000 divers annually, and this incident is the first of its kind this year. He emphasized the importance of regulations, arguing that without them, there would be numerous casualties daily.

The Zenobia shipwreck, which sank in 1980, is celebrated as one of the best diving sites in the Mediterranean and is often likened to the “Titanic of the Mediterranean.” It is regularly listed among the top ten wreck dive locations globally. Situated 1,500 meters off the Larnaca coast, the wreck lies at a depth of 42 meters and spans 172 meters across.

Notably, a similar incident occurred last year when another diver had to be hospitalized due to pulmonary edema following a rescue operation at the Zenobia shipwreck.

As the investigation unfolds, the diving community and authorities will be closely scrutinizing the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident, and discussions about the safety and regulations of the site are expected to continue.

A diver exploring the shipwreck “Zenobia” in the maritime area of Larnaca has been reported missing as of the morning of Thursday, October 26. The Larnaca Search and Rescue Coordination Center (KSERC) has initiated a search and rescue operation in response to this incident.

KSERC Larnaca received information about the missing diver around 10 a.m. The individual had descended to explore the “Zenobia” shipwreck located in the coastal waters of Larnaca Bay.

In response to the situation, the center activated the National Search and Rescue Plan “NEARCHOS.” This led to the deployment of rescue divers and teams from the Republic of Cyprus E-D System, alongside volunteer rescue teams.

The search operation is currently ongoing, with no results reported at this time.

About the Zenobia

The Zenobia shipwreck is one of the most renowned and well-preserved underwater archaeological sites in the world. Located off the coast of Larnaca in Cyprus, this sunken legend has captured the imagination of divers, historians, and adventure seekers since its discovery. Here’s a brief informational piece about this fascinating wreck.

The Zenobia: The Zenobia was a Swedish-built Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) ferry that set sail on her maiden voyage in May 1980. Tragically, she encountered technical difficulties just one mile from the Cypriot coast and was forced to anchor. Attempts to resolve the issues failed, and over the course of two days, the ship listed to one side, eventually sinking to a depth of approximately 42 meters (138 feet). Fortunately, all 105 crew members on board were safely evacuated, preventing any loss of life.

Archaeological Treasure: The Zenobia shipwreck is often described as a time capsule of the late 20th century, offering valuable insights into maritime technology and commerce during that era. The ship’s cargo included over a hundred vehicles, ranging from cars to trucks, as well as various goods such as meat, vegetables, and electronics.

Diving Adventure: The Zenobia is a mecca for divers from around the world. The crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean, coupled with the excellent visibility at this depth, make it an ideal site for exploring the wreck. Divers can navigate through the ship’s cavernous interiors, where trucks and cars are still recognizable, serving as eerie reminders of the ship’s former life.

Can Ontario’s Brook Trout Cope with Climate Change?

Ontario Trout

Climate change is having profound effects on aquatic ecosystems and the fish within them. The loss of coldwater stream and lake habitat puts brook trout, a native coldwater specialist, at risk. Brook trout are more resilient than we think when it comes to surviving in warming waters, but there is a threshold over which they cannot survive in the long term. Because climate change is happening faster than organisms can adapt, understanding thermal tolerance thresholds is a critical step towards effective, evidence-based conservation of our coldwater ecosystems and native fish species. – Register now!

The body of the renowned Chinese cave diver, Han Ting, was successfully recovered after being missing for 18 days during a dive in Du’an, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. Local authorities made the announcement on Wednesday.

Officials from the Du’an emergency management bureau reported that a smart underwater robot was deployed to retrieve the body, which was brought to the shore at 6:33 pm. Subsequent confirmation established the recovered body to be that of Han. The bureau extended condolences and stated that an ongoing investigation is in progress.

Media reports had previously detailed Han’s activities, noting that the 47-year-old diver was engaged in a training session on October 7 as he prepared for a world record challenge in deep cave diving. In May, Han had accomplished a remarkable dive of 277 meters in the same cave, setting an Asian record and coming within a mere 9 meters of the world record.

Following Han’s failure to resurface the next day, a search and rescue operation was initiated, enlisting professional teams from across China. On October 11, a remotely operated underwater vehicle discovered a body wedged between cave walls at a depth of approximately 110 meters, which was suspected to be Han. However, retrieving the body proved to be exceedingly challenging due to the complex underwater conditions.

Over his 17-year career as a diver, Han had been involved in numerous missions related to shipwreck archaeology for the country and participated in searches for the remains of Red Army soldiers. He also willingly contributed to many missions aimed at locating missing divers. Notably, the China Exploration and Research Society recognized him as China’s first all-around diving coach, proficient in scuba diving, free diving, and technical diving.

Federal prosecutors are pursuing justice for 34 individuals who tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire aboard the Conception, a scuba dive boat, back in 2019. The trial for Captain Jerry Boylan is set to commence this Tuesday, kicking off with the critical process of jury selection. Boylan has firmly maintained his innocence, contesting a single charge of misconduct or neglect of ship officer under a pre-Civil War statute, often referred to as “seaman’s manslaughter.” Despite public interest in the case, Boylan’s defense team has refrained from offering any public comments.

This heart-wrenching incident prompted significant reforms in maritime regulations, fueled congressional initiatives for change, and led to numerous civil lawsuits. Despite these extensive efforts, the precise cause of the pre-dawn fire that tragically engulfed the Conception off the Southern California coast in 2019 continues to elude investigators.

Why this petition matters

Started by John Hourston

More than 100,000 dolphins and small whales are hunted and killed every year. Most hunts are unregulated, illegal and unsustainable with unknown impacts on populations.

I’m a volunteer at Blue Planet Society so I can help to conserve our amazing marine wildlife – and I’m determined to help save dolphins and small whales.

I’m urging Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, and Aksel V. Johannesen, Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, to stop the hunt of EU/UK protected dolphins and small whales and transition to sustainable wildlife tourism.

Please sign petition calling for dolphin and small whale hunting to end.

Research has been taking place to find the wreck of a VOC ship in Table Bay near Cape Town since 1989. The wreck is that of the Nieuw Haarlem, an East Indiaman of about 500 tons that was built in 1642–1643 in the yard of the Chamber of Amsterdam.

Returning from a trading trip, the ship had completed three return voyages before it fell on a lee shore in the Table Bay and ran aground on 25 March 1647. Shortly thereafter 58 of the 120 strong crew were repatriated with the help from some English ships and the Witte Olifant and Schiedam, with which the Nieuw Haarlem had left Batavia on 16 January. The other 62 hands remained behind to put as much of the cargo as possible in safety. It took about a year for them to be picked up by the return fleet of 1648. In that intervening period the crew of the Nieuw Haarlem came into contact with the local population. Although the first meetings were marked by insecurity and suspicion, communication improved after a few months. In the end they engaged in bartering, visited each other and a few of the locals even learned some Dutch.

Up to now the search for the Nieuw Haarlem has been based on archival searches and limited archaeological work in the field. Although the wreck has not been found yet, archival material has provided significant indicators to its probable location. This comprised first of all the logbook kept by deputy merchant Leendert Jansz, who together with Claes Winckels, master, commanded the 62 crew left behind.

This logbook mentions the estimated distance from the wreck and from the nearby encampment that was set up, to the quayside where the VOC ships and other vessels dropped anchor and where fresh drinking water was taken on board. This distance of one and a half ‘German mile’ or 11,112 metres, was then measured on a modern chart of Table Bay in following the coast line. This came out at a position between the present-day suburbs of Milnerton and Table View.

The direct distance between this point and the starting point was then measured, which resulted in a distance of a little over 10.5 kilometres. A manuscript chart from 1662 in the Leupe Collection of Foreign Maps and Charts in the Nationaal Archief confirmed the probable site of where the ship ran aground. This chart is not a true representation of the actual situation, as can be surmised from the exaggerated curved line of the east coast of Table Bay. It is more of a so-called fairsheet, which also provides other information such as the coastal contours.

However, it is very significant that the position of the wreck of the Nieuw Haarlem is marked a little south east of Robben Island. This was confirmed by projecting the chart as accurately as possible onto a modern nautical chart of the area, which also indicated a position between Milnerton and Table View. A second instruction is given in the journal of the first commander of the Cape colony, Jan van Riebeeck. This mentions that the wreck of the Nieuw Haarlem was still partly visible in 1652 and that there were some salt marshes in the immediate vicinity.

A different chart from the Leupe collection which marks these salt marshes in detail was used to indicate the extreme north and south boundaries of this area. This information was then projected onto a Google Earth bird’s eye view of the area in question. This also confirmed the probable site of the wreck. Geophysical research that has been undertaken since then, has detected a few considerable disturbances in the earth’s magnetic field which may possibly indicate the presence of wrecks buried beneath the sand. These sites have now be investigated by means of trial excavations. It is hoped that these will result in the wreck of the Nieuw Haarlem being found in the near future.

Contemporary Artist Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee continues to make waves

The search for the most outstanding projects integrating commissioned art into interior, architectural or public spaces brought CODAawards: Collaboration of Design + Art around the globe.

The 11th annual international design competition found a winner in Houston.

Janavi Mahimatura Folmsbee was honored with the “People’s Choice” prize for her installation – the Aquarius Art Tunnel at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

She is bringing the award to Texas – a major win for the city of Houston.

Winners in other categories reside across the country Utah, New York, Ohio, Florida, California, as well as in Canada, Italy, Taiwan, Germany and the UK.

The CODAawards received a record-breaking 411 entries for this year’s competition – from 24 different countries, representing over $54 million in commissions. A distinguished panel of 18 jurors reviewed and scored the entries.

CODAworx winners were published in the September 2023 issue of CODAmagazine. The honorees were recognized on Oct. 6 at CODAsummit in San José, California. Mahimtura Folmsbee attended with Alton DuLaney, curator of public art and director of cultural arts programs at Houston Airports, who submitted her work for the award.

“Now the world’s best airport art program officially has the world’s best public arts project,” DuLaney said. “The immersive art experience by Indian-born, Houston-based artist Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee received more than 20 percent of the total votes cast. That’s the most votes of any artwork in the history of the award.”

The Aquarius Art tunnel has also received the National Mural Award in 2023 for Region 4 in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

The United Nations Decades of Ocean Science For Sustainable Development (UNDOS), created by UNESCO, also endorsed the Aquarius art tunnel as a global site for its scientific and educational importance towards ocean conservation through artistic outreach.

Mahimtura Folmsbee is the first female South Asian artist to be featured in the Houston Airports Public Art Program and collection.

The “Aquarius Art Tunnel” is 240 feet long, almost 9 feet high and 22 feet wide. Walking through it will transport travelers to under the sea, complete with colorful murals of aquatic life.

Mahimtura Folsmbee’s design was inspired by Flower Garden Banks Marine National Sanctuary on the Texas coast. She selected dozens of marine life from the reef – including coral, fish, algae, crinoids, sharks, Atlantic dolphins, turtles, eels, manta rays, octopi, mollusks and lobsters.

The detailed art for both walls of the tunnel has been created with the newest mural-making technology. Mahimtura Folmsbee worked with Emma Hickerson, G.P. Schmal and Jake Emmert of Moody Gardens to ensure the work is scientifically accurate, representing the deeper regions and mesophotic zones that are at 600 feet and below in the ocean in the Gulf of Mexico.

The tunnel is a space that showcases multiple artistic techniques, including fine art murals, floor designs, lenticulars, ceiling tiles, light and sound. A didactic panel will allow visitors to access the tunnel’s full features and augmented reality.

Original music, composed by Houston musician Andrew Karnavas, plays in the space, as well as recordings provided by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. The artist also contributed sounds from her personal diving excursions.

Mahimtura Folmsbee is focused on making the final product educational. The title of the installation pays homage to the constellation Aquarius, the water-bearer. The word “Aquarius” can be broken down into: “aqua,” representing water; and “ri,” inspired by the Hindi word “humari,” which translates to “ours,” and finally “us.”

“Taken together, the words signify that water has the power to unite us,” Mahimtura Folmsbee said. “Water is ours – for all of us.”

Marine conservation is at the center of Mahimtura Folmsbee’s oeuvre. This installation will serve as a continuation of years of effort to draw attention to the health of the world’s oceans.

Mahimtura Folmsbee’s drive to help the marine world has grown since she began diving 11 years ago. She has completed 253 dives.

Mahimtura Folmsbee works with marine scientists in the global community and sits on the Sanctuary Advisory Council for the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, as an advisory to the superintendent of the sanctuary through the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

“Marine life and algae need our help now more than ever,” Mahimtura Folmsbee said.

Fourth Element, a leading innovator in the world of diving gear, is proud to announce the launch of the Seeker mask, a groundbreaking addition to their renowned product lineup. Designed with the ultimate diving experience in mind, the Seeker mask offers an unparalleled field of vision and a universal fit for divers of all levels.

Fourth Element Seeker Mask

The Seeker mask sets a new standard in dive masks, with innovative design focusing on two primary objectives: maximizing the diver’s field of vision while maintaining the comfort and fit that fourth element is known for.

Key Features of the Seeker mask:

Wide Field of Vision

The Seeker mask’s single lens design provides a field of vision so expansive that it comes close to the feeling of not wearing a mask at all. Divers will enjoy an unobstructed view of the underwater world, enhancing their overall diving experience.

Universal Fit

Fourth Element’s Seeker mask is engineered to fit nearly everyone comfortably. Thanks to new facial geometry and a soft silicone skirt, the mask molds to the contours of the diver’s face, ensuring a secure and leak-free seal.

Low Volume Design

The Seeker mask’s low volume design offers several advantages. It simplifies equalization and mask clearing, making it ideal for both novice and experienced divers. Additionally, the reduced internal volume contributes to a brighter and wider visual experience, approximating the natural field of vision.

Fourth Element Seeker Mask

The Seeker Mask represents fourth element’s commitment to pursuit of innovation in diving equipment. Whether you’re exploring vibrant coral reefs or descending into the depths of underwater caves, the Seeker mask is your ticket to a truly immersive and visually stunning underwater world.

In 2022, East Coast Scuba & Watersports was the FIRST Canadian dive shop to join the international event Diversnight. We were one of 151 groups spread over 25 countries. Last year a total of 1527 divers participated worldwide. We are registered and ready to participate again in 2023!

Meet us at Fox Point beach at 7pm for a group dive under the stars! Please bring multiple lights and feel free to accessorize with glow sticks.

Snorkelers, paddlers & bubble watchers welcome!

If you wish, gather at the shop beforehand to enable carpooling.

Kagi Maldives Resort & Spa now welcomes guests of all ages, making it the perfect destination for families looking for a wholesome and unforgettable tropical getaway.

The island is located on the secluded tip of North Male Atoll, accessible by a 15-minute picturesque seaplane transfer from Velana International Airport. The island features 50 all-pool villas on land and over water just steps away from a dip in the ocean.

Uncrowded dive sites, an excellent house reef for snorkeling, fun activities for the little ones, great wellness and spa facilities, you might think it’s too much to ask but at Kagi Maldives Resort & Spa you can have everything on your wish list and more!

Due to its out-of-the-way location, divers at Kagi often enjoy having the dive sites to themselves with just the Euro-Divers Kagi expert guides, their buddy and their bubbles for company – this gives a private charter-like experience without specifically booking one.

You may start worrying that there won’t be enough to do to keep your family occupied but if you introduce them to scuba diving, they will be active, learn something new and get to see the beautiful underwater world.

Kids as young as 8 can experience diving with the PADI Bubblemaker program and from the age of 10 can participate in the Discover Scuba Diving program. This isn’t a certification course so it is a great option if your family wants to experience diving but don’t want to study on their holiday.

Book your festive getaway with a choice of offers of up to 30% savings on villa bookings and a family dive package that can be shared with your family and friends.

We look forward to showing you the marine delights of Kagi soon and creating a memorable festive season.

SCUBAPRO, the world’s premier manufacturer of high-quality scuba diving equipment, introduces its second generation Luna 2.0, an easy-to-read, intuitive dive computer loaded with easy-to-use features and available in two versions, the Luna 2.0 and Luna 2.0 AI with wireless air integration.

Designed for new and casual recreational divers, the low-profile Luna 2.0 sits comfortably on the wrist. Its oil-filled plastic housing helps ensure reliable performance to depths of 120 meters. A large widescreen display features a high-contrast black and white matrix-segment LCD with full-sized characters for easy reading in all dive conditions. An intuitive menu and simple two-button interface lets the diver navigate the system with ease, aided by clearly marked screen prompts. The LUNA 2.0 offers two algorithms – Predictive Multi-Gas Bühlmann ZH-L16 ADT MB PMG or ZH-L16 + GF PURE, plus 21-50% nitrox compatibility and three selectable gasses for open circuit diving. Three dive modes are available – Scuba, Apnea and Gauge – to suit a range of diving activities.

Scubapro Luna Dive Computer

The Luna 2.0 AI (air integrated) offers the same easy-to-use features and functions as the standard Luna 2.0 plus adds wireless air integration. This not only enables to easily monitor ythe tank pressure, it also provides true remaining bottom time (RBT) and allows the air consumption to be factored into the decompression calculation. Also available with the Luna 2.0 AI is an optional integrated heart rate monitor that lets visually track the heart rate and skin temperature to help staying in the personal target zone.

Both Luna 2.0 models include personalized dive management functions like PDIS (Profile Dependent Intermediate Stops) which calculates an intermediate stop based on N2 loading, current and previous dives and breathing mixes, and Microbubble levels that give the option to adjust the level of conservatism in the algorithm to match the individual experience level, age and physical conditioning for a more enjoyable dive.

The soft silicone arm strap offers a comfortable fit on the wrist, plus bungee mounts on the corners of the housing allow for alternate attachment methods. A Bluetooth Low Energy interface enables the download of the dive data to any iOS or Android device or PC/Mac (firmware can be user-updated), and the CR2450 battery is rated for up to two years or 300 dives.

A1 Auto Transport Boat Shipper Profile: White Glove Boat Shipping https://www.thescubanews.com/2023/10/14/a1-auto-transport-boat-shipper-profile-white-glove-boat-shipping/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a1-auto-transport-boat-shipper-profile-white-glove-boat-shipping https://www.thescubanews.com/2023/10/14/a1-auto-transport-boat-shipper-profile-white-glove-boat-shipping/#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2023 05:13:39 +0000 https://www.thescubanews.com/?p=32328 Want to ship your boat to help you scuba dive on your next adventure? Want to ship your boat to help you scuba dive on your next adventure?

Are you unsure of how to go about boat shipping what that may entail, and who are the companies that may be able to help you with a large task like boat transport?

Below we’ll go into how to ship a boat and cover A1 Auto Transport, a company that has been helping scuba divers, pilots, and vehicle drivers throughout the world to deliver their vehicles.

Let’s get started.

Who is A1 Auto?

A1 Auto is one of the largest USA-based automobile (and other vehicle) shippers. They have offices all around the world and overseas, and have plenty of staff at the ready to help you or anyone else ship their vehicle.

A1 Auto has been in the business for a few decades. They promise that they uphold their reputation throughout their lifetime in business, and are offering competitive prices in a competitive industry.

In 1988, Tony Taylor, one of the founders, purchased his first tow truck in Watsonville, California. By 1995, they amassed a fleet of 50 auto transport carriers. In 2008, they reached over 500,000 shipments and by 2011, they became cars.com official auto shipper.

And now in 2023, they are one of the leading worldwide auto shippers and are ready to help you ship any boat, plane, ATV, or heavy equipment that is required.

Owner Tony Taylor states: “Many auto shipping companies do not work legitimately and are a stain on the industry. We have gone to many lengths by documenting all of our licenses and proof of legitimacy. If the transport company you’re working with does offer to show you their documents, then steer clear otherwise you may be working with an unlicensed and illegal operation.”

How Does A1 Auto Ship Boats?

A1 Auto offers many different services for boat shipping. They can help you shrink-wrap your boat if necessary to reduce any damage or moisture that could harm the inside of your boat. They also offer roll-on, and roll-off shipping, which means that your vehicle will be driven onto a ship with an attached trailer.

They also offer overland transport, which means they will help you transport your boat to any port in the US or internationally. If you need your boat shipped across the country, they also offer interstate delivery.

What’s also great is if you travel overseas, they offer international boat transportation and understand the intricacies of shipping delicate objects like a boat, which can be easily damaged by an untrained operator.

With so many different types and sizes of boats, it can be daunting to ship your boat yourself. That being said, you can always rely on a reliable transportation service. Whether you have a yacht, a small boat, or a kayak that needs to be relocated, A1 Auto Transport can help.

How Much Does it Cost to Ship a Boat?

If you’re moving an 11-foot boat, it will cost around $740 to move from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. If you’re going from San Diego to Dallas, it will take around 4-6 days and will be around $3740.

If you’re going from Miami to Denver, it will cost around $5680 and take around 6-8 days. If you’re going from San Jose to Miami, it will cost $8440 and take around 7-9 days. Remember, these prices are only estimates and are only for an 11-foot boat.

Do be aware that shipping times are normally given in a range of days, so if you’re awaiting your boat for a special day at your destination, plan ahead of time or keep it in storage and ship it earlier, so your boat is there for your adventure.

Conclusion

A1 Auto Transport has carved a niche for itself in the realm of vehicle shipping, with a particular emphasis on boat transportation. With decades of experience, a commitment to legitimacy, and a breadth of services designed to cater to all sizes and types of boats, A1 Auto showcases its unparalleled expertise.

Their history, beginning with a single tow truck and evolving into a leading global auto shipper, speaks volumes about their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Offering both domestic and international transportation options, they’ve demystified the complexities of shipping, especially for delicate items like boats. Their transparent pricing structures provide potential clients with a clear understanding of the costs, ensuring there are no hidden surprises.

For adventurers awaiting their next scuba diving experience or just sail across the waters, timely planning with A1 Auto Transport guarantees a smooth journey for both the boat and its owner. The words of founder Tony Taylor resonate strongly – in an industry marred by dubious players, A1 Auto’s transparent and legitimate operations stand out, ensuring peace of mind for every customer.

We have sad news to report as Canadian boating icon Victor Duhamel, the pioneer of Legend Boats, has passed away at age 82.

The well-respected brand has been a figurehead of Canadian boating for over 50 years and has played a pivotal role in Canada’s boating landscape and retail economy. The Whitefish, Ontario company was the first Canadian boat manufacturer to offer complete packages including a boat, motor, and trailer — which offered a simpler and more enjoyable buying experience to go with the company’s well-built products. Legend has been a longstanding benchmark for the Ontario economy, and the Canadian boating market at large, while earning a reputation for quality products and excellent customer service.

The company currently designs and manufactures over 30 models of aluminum fish/ski/cruise boats, four deck boat models, and over 40 models of pontoon boats that are distributed through over 60 Legend dealers across Canada.

We send our condolences to the entire Duhamel family and everyone at Legend. Please see the press release below:

LIVELY, ONTARIO – It is with deep sadness and profound respect that we announce the passing of Victor Duhamel, the dynamic and pioneering co-founder of Legend Boats.

Born on February 15th, 1941 in Lively, Ontario, Victor’s early years at St. Charles Catholic High School laid the foundation for his innovative spirit and business acumen. From humble beginnings selling tires at Duhamel & Dewar alongside friend and business partner Carl Dewar, to being inducted into the Canadian Boating Industry Hall of Fame, Victor’s journey was nothing short of remarkable.

A visionary who saw beyond the waves, Victor transformed the Canadian boating landscape. As co-founders of Legend Boats, he and Carl sensed a niche for boats designed by Canadians for Canadian waters. With trailblazing moves like the introduction of the country’s first fully-priced boat catalogue in 1988, Victor always navigated uncharted waters with confidence. Other industry-firsts, from the revolutionary rear bench that converts into an extended casting deck, to the introduction of sleek molded consoles in aluminum boats, stand testament to his unparalleled creativity.

A Titan of Industry

“I will always remember Vic as a visionary in the marine industry,” says Jamie Dewar, co-CEO and son of Carl Dewar. “His innovative approach to business set new horizons, but it was his deep love for people that truly made waves in our hearts and the industry.”

Beyond his business milestones, Victor’s personal attributes echoed the greatness of his professional achievements. Known for his warmth and friendliness, Victor’s interactions were characterized by a genuine smile and an authentic interest in those he met.

A Family Man

“My father Victor was an incredible family man who worked hard to help create memories for our customers, our work family and our partners in business,” said Marc Duhamel, President and co-CEO. “My father shared a love and passion for everything outdoors. He believed strongly in family and always made time for what is truly important in life, the time we spend with family and friends.”

“He was an incredible husband to my mother, Ruthann, who he fell in love with at first sight and was married to for nearly 60 years. He was an incredible father, grandfather and great grandfather, who always supported each of us to be our best. He was a valued mentor who always took the time to teach and share his experience. An incredible story teller, my father lived life to the fullest and has shared more stories than I can ever recount. He shared these over and over and we will miss them.”

“He will be fondly remembered by everyone he met. My dad would meet people and form the deepest relationships with them. He loved everyone and always wanted to hear their story. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten. His legacy will endure.”

The King of the Road

Dubbed the “King of the Road” by the Sudbury Star, Victor’s love for North American landscapes was evident. His passion for RV travels showcased his insatiable wanderlust and zest for adventure.

“When I think back of the times with Dad, we spent a lot of time together traveling,” said Jeff Duhamel, Business Development Manager. “My father’s adventurous spirit was passed on to us at a very young age. He was an RV enthusiast. With my mom Ruthann, myself, my brothers Todd and Marc, and my sister Nicole, my Dad has taken us in an RV all over Canada and the USA.”

“The things we have seen and done may be more than most get to experience in a lifetime. His generosity and curiosity took us not just to places but to meeting all types of people from literally all over the world. He would talk to anyone, about anything and always found each person he encountered fascinating in their own way.”

“My father was a natural born salesperson. To him it was not about the sale but rather the relationships he made and built that mattered to him the most. I sit and think about how many families he helped create memories with over his many years in the marine and RV world.”

“Dad, your strength, dedication and love have built a strong family foundation. Thank you for guiding us along our way to make our lives full of success, loving families and memories made together.”

A Legacy That Transcends Generations

His legacy is not just etched in the innovations he brought to the industry but also in the vibrant family business that continues to thrive. With his sons Marc and Jeff Duhamel at the helm of various facets of the business, and his grandchildren gearing up to carry forward his indomitable spirit, Victor’s legacy is poised to sail into the future.

Victor’s passing is an immeasurable loss to the Legend Boats family, the boating community, and Canada. He leaves behind a sea of memories, innovations, and a legacy that will continue to influence and inspire for generations. Details regarding memorial services and remembrances will be communicated in due course.
