The Maritime Museum of British Columbia’s Remembrance Day Human Library program will run on the afternoon of November 11th, 2023, from 1:30 – 3:30 PM, with admission by donation. The Museum will otherwise be closed to admissions that day for the statutory holiday.

About the program

This Human Library program is an opportunity to talk to two service members with unique service histories and trades. In group conversations, explore memories, stories, and technical expertise.

“The idea of a Human Library is that instead of books, visitors in groups get to talk to multiple people with specific lived experiences, each for a set amount of time before beginning a new conversation,” said Events and Development Manager Anya Zanko.

Two service members, CPO1 Jonathon Sorensen and Lt(N) Michelle Scott, will join participants for this program, and run 2 parallel sessions of 30-minute conversations; there will be a break in between each session.

Admission to this program is by donation. We will have hot chocolate and a break between conversations.

The narrative of the ships, which is a crucial aspect of the Halifax Explosion, is largely missing from the many excellent books that have been written about it. That day, there were far more than 150 boats in the harbour. We have very little knowledge of them. The enormous task of identifying and narrating the histories of the ships and the sailors who manned them is taken on by The Dangerous Harbour: Revealing the Unknown Ships and Wrecks of the Halifax Explosion.

Read The Scuba News Canada article on Atlantic’s Last Stop Courage, Folly, and Lies in the White Star Line’s Worst Disaster Before Titanic

This is Bob Chaulk’s sixth book about the seas and sailors of Eastern Canada, drawing from more than 1,200 dives in Halifax Harbour. The author of Atlantic’s Last Stop: Courage, Folly, and Lies in the White Star Line’s Worst Disaster Before the Titanic, Bob is a well-known writer and speaker on nautical history. He recently came back from Liverpool, United Kingdom, where he told the tale of Nova Scotia’s worst shipwreck in the port where the Atlantic sailed.

About the Author Robert B Chaulk

Robert G. Chaulk is the SS Atlantic Heritage Park’s historian and a recognized expert on the SS Atlantic accident. He is the author of five volumes about the maritime history of Atlantic Canada. He co-authored SS Atlantic: The White Star Line’s First Disaster at Sea, which received three literary honours, with Greg Cochkanoff. Bob is an ardent scuba diver who has done over fifty dives on the Atlantic wreck, giving him a unique viewpoint on this significant piece of Canadian history.

We have a fantastic week planned for May 13-20, 2024, staying at the 4-Star All Inclusive Bahia Principe Grand Coba Resort and diving in Akumal, Mexico.

Akumal is one of our favourite scuba diving spots. It combines a lovely reef/wall experience with epic cenote diving in a stunning setting. The Akumal reef is incredible, with turtles, coral reefs, and marine life, as well as world-class cenote diving led by our favourite Cave Explorer, Matt Mandziuk, and friends.

The month of May is ideal for diving in this area. Akumal literally translates to “Land of Turtles,” and the turtle breeding season begins in May. Spring and summer are the best times to visit the Cenotes.

Can Ontario’s Brook Trout Cope with Climate Change?

Ontario Trout

Climate change is having profound effects on aquatic ecosystems and the fish within them. The loss of coldwater stream and lake habitat puts brook trout, a native coldwater specialist, at risk. Brook trout are more resilient than we think when it comes to surviving in warming waters, but there is a threshold over which they cannot survive in the long term. Because climate change is happening faster than organisms can adapt, understanding thermal tolerance thresholds is a critical step towards effective, evidence-based conservation of our coldwater ecosystems and native fish species. – Register now!

Diversnight started in Norway as a way to bring divers together for one night of diving. Around the world on the evening of November 4th, divers will participate in an international night dive followed by cake, demonstrating the strong community that exists in the world of scuba diving.

In 2022, East Coast Scuba & Watersports was the FIRST Canadian dive shop to join the international event Diversnight. We were one of 151 groups spread over 25 countries. Last year a total of 1527 divers participated worldwide. We are registered and ready to participate again in 2023!

Meet us at Fox Point beach at 7pm for a group dive under the stars! Please bring multiple lights and feel free to accessorize with glow sticks.

Snorkelers, paddlers & bubble watchers welcome!

If you wish, gather at the shop beforehand to enable carpooling.

Dive Pirates Foundation is proud to announce it has been nominated for DEMA’s 2023 Diving Community Champions award. The Foundation is asking all DEMA members to support the crew and vote to recognize the great efforts achieved in 2023!

Specifically, DPF is being recognized for this year’s “Find Your Inner Treasure” effort, which brought the world of scuba diving to 6 adults living with disabilities. Through this effort, the recipients – 5 of whom are military veterans – were equipped fully and trained by their local dive shops before enjoying a week-long dive trip to Cayman Brac Beach Resort. While at the resort, DPF provided additional volunteer instructors and adaptive buddies for all participants to dive adaptively alongside industry professionals and returning adaptive divers alike. For many of the new divers, these dives were their first open water diving experiences. By the end of the week, all new divers had completed more than a dozen open water dives, with some also earning their open water diver certification.

Dive Pirates

However, Dive Pirates’ “Find Your Inner Treasure” effort also provides something much more than a scuba diving trip: freedom. The new divers frequently used this word to describe the feeling of scuba diving, with many expressing that they thought diving was unattainable for them with their disability. For them, this trip was much more than a vacation. It was a confidence boost and validation of their ability.

New participants also found themselves welcomed into the Dive Pirates family and the dive community at large. Throughout the trip, DPF provided its participants new and old with fun events at the resort in order to build camaraderie and to promote a welcoming, inclusive environment for the 6 new divers. With the new members eager to return for future dives, as well as 8 past recipients, one stowaway adaptive diver, and other divers making this their vacation volunteer effort resulting in 64 travelers,  2023 marked another successful year for the Dive Pirates Foundation..

Now, DPF needs you to vote so they can be recognized for their amazing work! Voting closes October 12, 2023, at 4:00 pm US Pacific Time. DEMA members can vote for DPF here.

Dive Pirates

The Dive Pirates Foundation a 501(c)3 organization, positively impacts the lives of its recipients; injured military, first responders, law enforcement and others with mobile disabilities, by welcoming them into adaptive scuba diving which fosters accomplishment, self-worth and community. The Foundation trains, equips and conducts dive trips year-round to calm, warm-water locations for the safety of those with spinal cord injuries, networking with facilities willing to empower all participants with compassion and adaptation for a positive experience diving, team building and networking.

Explorer Ventures Fleet® is excited to announce its new group travel specials for DEMA 2023, offering dive shops the chance to keep more cash in their pockets, with free liveaboard berth spaces and low deposit terms.

This year’s 2023 DEMA specials provide dive shops with the flexibility of selecting cash savings and deposit amounts based on group size, while also allowing them to choose when and where they would like to travel into 2026. This is perfect for groups wanting to dive the Caribbean, Turks and Caicos, Red Sea, Maldives, and Galapagos Islands, on the following vessels: Caribbean Explorer II, Turks & Caicos Explorer II, Grand Sea Explorer, Emperor Explorer, Humboldt Explorer, and Tiburon Explorer. With standard free berth spaces also included (one complimentary space for as few as five booked, up to two per charter), dive shops can save even more money while offering their clients an unforgettable liveaboard experience. Plus, the lowered deposit terms allow dive shops to start with an initial small investment allowing for additional time to promote and sell the trip.

According to Clay McCardell, Explorer Ventures Fleet’s CEO, “We know how important it is for dive shops to have flexibility when planning group trips, particularly in light of the current conditions. Our new specials offer the opportunity for dive shops to save money, while also enjoying the freedom to customize each group’s size according to the shop’s unique needs.”

These new 2023 DEMA specials are perfect for dive shops looking to book an inclusive liveaboard dive trip with friends or clients. The promotion offers versatility and affordability, while also delivering a memorable experience on one of Explorer Ventures Fleet’s superior liveaboards.

The Maritime Museum of BC, with support from the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, Mill Bay Marine Group, the BC Fairs, Festivals, an Events Recovery Fund grant from the Province of British Columbia, and a Festival Investment Grant from the City of Victoria, will be hosting the 44th Annual Victoria Classic Boat Festival this Labour Day Weekend, from September 1-3, 2023. We are also delighted to announce a Museum Dock of significant vessels from the Wooden Boat Society, and the Ladysmith Maritime Society!

The Honourary Commodore for 2023 is Captain Richard “Slim” Gardner aboard MV Deerleap.

About the Victoria Classic Boat Festival

The Victoria Classic Boat Festival is a spectacular annual gathering of vessels of a Classic design, both new and old, power and sail. Vessels attend from all over the Pacific Northwest, with the occasional visiting vessel from distant oceans. Each year during the Labour Day Weekend, approximately 10,000 visitors tour the docks and the boats on display. The public is invited to view the boats while they are moored at the Inner Harbour docks. Many owners generously offer tours of their boats.

William Noon, Festival Chair, noted that “the Pacific Northwest is blessed with an enormous number of traditional boats – from sail boats, to workboats, to cruisers. The Festival began in 1977 with the idea that our maritime heritage must not only be preserved, but also celebrated. The Festival’s open docks, events, and activities serve to engage our community and visitors on our maritime history, culture, and its ongoing story.”

As in previous years, these classic boats will participate in a “sail past” and race on Sunday, September 4. The modern day “sail past” tradition began at the first yacht club that was formed in England nearly 200 years ago. It was first introduced as a continuation of the naval habit of having Admirals and Royalty review the fleet on special occasions. The Festival’s tradition is similar, however, the Honourary Commodore instead of the Admiral receives the salute. Spectators can head out to watch the parade of ships and races from Victoria Waterfront on Sunday afternoon.

Abernethy & Gaudin Ltd. Young Boaters Scholarship

We are delighted to announce that our 2023 Abernethy & Gaudin Boatbuilders Ltd. Young Boaters Scholarship recipient is Eden Murray, with China Cloud.

China Cloud is a 45’ junk rig sailing vessel that was built on the beach with a hand saw and an axe by Allen and Sharie Farrell. Perched upon the mud flats on Lasqueti island and soaring lightly atop the water, this famous vessel and its welcoming aura inspired countless individuals up and down the coast. A masterpiece, an artistic home, and a gentle symbol for living uniquely and with peace, China Cloud is happy to be sailing again 40 years after her launch.

Well lived in and starting her deeper restorations by owner, Eden Murray and shipwright, Hans Murray, this legacy of the Farrells and all that loved them will now be happily embedded in community once again! You can read more about China Cloud’s history and current happenings at edengrace.ca/china-cloud

The scholarship covers registration and moorage at the Festival, all events, and is awarded each year to an eligible boater under 30. Applications for the scholarship open for the 2024 Festival in January 2024.

Join us at Mariners Park Museum on August 12th at 1:00pm for a special presentation by diver Corey Phillips. Corey will speak about the shipwrecks which are moored in the Prince Edward County area, the mooring process, and a little history about each the wrecks.

About Corey Phillips

My wife comes up with the most amazing gifts. In 2002, she “gifted” me with getting open water certified. Diving on evening charters, I expanded my knowledge and skills with the GUE Fundamentals and eventually Tech 1 courses. Once I had in-water skills, I wanted to go places that hadn’t been explored in some time, usually long forgotten shipwrecks using a “shotline” as my only guide to the bottom. Ever since I have been hooked on diving. I have not had much opportunity to dive outside of Ontario but have visited Nova Scotia, P.E.I., Vancouver, Florida, and Tortola, completing dives in each location.

Highlights of my diving background:

900+ dives.
Technical diver certified to 170’ using normoxic trimix, deco gases 50%, and 100% oxygen.
DPV (Underwater scooter)
No touch diving techniques used.

Videographer and Photographer.
Past Vice-President of Preserve Our Wrecks (Kingston).
Involved in getting a mooring block installed on the shipwreck, the Eureka.

Current Mooring Director of Save Ontario Shipwrecks – Picton Chapter.
Working away at getting all moorings up to SOS Corporate standard.
Member of the Florence project, which installed a block and line.

Current diver on the P-51 Mustang project
Officer Barry Newman recovery team

Shot video in Little Marble Lake and passed it on so the Cloyne and District Historical Society
Co-founder of Ontario Diving on Facebook (over 3700 members).

Co-founder of shotlinediving.com, which documents shipwrecks and is quickly becoming the go-to location to track wrecks in Ontario waters.

I enjoy passing images and videos from my passion for those who don’t dive to see.

Registration and tickets are not required, but RVSPs are requested to ensure adequate seating. Please RSVP by calling (905) 835-2900 ext. 550 or emailing fallon.gervais@portcolborne.ca.

About Kayla Martin

Kayla Martin is a recent Wilfred Laurier University BSc Water Science and Environmental Health graduate. She began diving at the age of thirteen and has logged hundreds of dives exploring historic shipwrecks and beautiful coral reefs.

Kayla is involved in Great Lakes conservation and education. She researches invasive species and methods to prevent and control their spread into water bodies, particularly inland lakes and rivers. She most recently worked for Parks Canada in the Rouge National Urban Park Drinking Water Quality Program, where she helped tenants transition from bottled water to healthy tap water. Her research focuses on our interactions with water, the environmental impacts of water use, and strategies for achieving sustainability for future generations. She is currently working as a Research Assistant for the Wetlands Hydrology Research Group at the University of Waterloo, investigating peatlands in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region.

Kayla hopes to inspire the next generation of divers with her passion for diving and all things water-related. She has spoken at diving conventions all over North America, including the prestigious Our World Underwater film festival in Chicago and the Niagara Divers Association Shipwrecks Show. She is an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ community and has organized and taken part in “Women’s Day of Diving” activities to encourage women of all ages and abilities to explore the underwater world. Kayla is a spokesperson for a number of Canadian marine conservation organizations. She works with Save Our Shipwrecks (SOS) to promote the preservation of historic shipwrecks and low-impact diving, and the Ontario Marine Heritage Committee to document submerged historical sites. She is the Niagara Divers Association’s Membership Director.

Organizer Stefan Panis is a diver at heart and soul! From the age of 6, he embarked on his first dive alongside his father, and since then, he has undertaken numerous dives, developing a strong passion for technical diving, wreck diving, cave diving, and mine diving.

After leading the way at the Tekdive Shows in Antwerp for years, Stefan felt it was time to branch out and spread his own wings in 2019. This led to the creation of “Tec-Expo,” an innovative fair supported by a passionate and youthful team brimming with fresh ideas. Their aim was to organize an exceptional and affordable fair that would feature high-quality lectures, workshops, and a stunning exhibition space. The one-day trial event was a tremendous success, and throughout the entire process, they actively listened to the exhibitors, visitors, and speakers, taking their feedback to heart.

The feedback received indicated that “Start To Tec” had a vibrant presence and there was substantial interest among novice (recreational) divers in swimming techniques, buoyancy control, and materials. However, a majority of those surveyed expressed concerns about the perceived high threshold to attend a “Tec” exhibition. Therefore, the team made a deliberate choice to rebrand the event as “DiveXpo,” aiming to address this issue directly.

The TekTalk Asia Conference is one of ADEX’s highlights. The conference focuses on the technical diving discipline.

If you are driven by curiosity about what might lie within the confines of a wreck or a cave, or what hitherto undiscovered life forms lurk in the deeper ocean trenches this is your fix!

Voyage to the Deep: Underwater Adventures brings to life Captain Nemo’s mythical world as well as the true wonders of ocean exploration. Based on Jules Verne’s classic novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, this interactive exhibition transports you on an exciting deep-sea adventure that is ideal for families and children aged 2 to 10.

Explore the Octopus Garden, look for sea creatures in the Kelp Forest, and learn about the lost world of Atlantis. The Australian National Maritime Museum, an Australian Government entity, created and developed the Voyage to the Deep exhibition. Flying Fish Exhibits is in charge of the exhibition tour.

All three sessions will be in person, at Bayland Community Center, and via Zoom for any participants that can’t make it to the in-person presentation. The workshops are FREE.

Three 1-hour Workshops for Beginning to Intermediate Videographers – Starting May 20, 2-4 p.m.

The three sessions will only deal with how to take good video clips underwater. They will not deal with editing and assembly into final films. The surprising thing about UW video is that it doesn’t have to be a black art. There are some simple practices that are easily taught and somewhat easily practiced that will make a night and day difference in results you achieve.

  • Session one: Achieving Good Color Underwater
  • Session two: How to Take Stable UW Video Clips
  • Session three: Taking Video that is Critically In Focus

Time will also be spent discussing how to best get reliable results from action cameras, point and shoot systems, and higher end SLRs. Questions will be fielded for answers and discussion.

“boot is passion!” is how Wolfram Diener, CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, describes the world’s most important event for the entire water sports industry and adds: “We put our heart and soul into our exhibitors. This year’s boot has shown that it is the constant engine of the industry and drives the entire international market.”

The figures for boot Düsseldorf 2023 speak for themselves: around 237,000 people were inspired by the comprehensive range of products and services on offer at the show and many acted on their purchase intentions directly in the 16 halls. 77,500 boot fans travelled to Düsseldorf from abroad over the nine days of the show. The almost 1,500 exhibitors, 64 percent of whom were not from Germany, came from 68 countries. The media coverage around boot 2023 and 1,861 accredited journalists ensured almost 1 billion media contacts. “This makes boot a real media giant and truly unique in the whole world,” explains Petros Michelidakis, Director boot Düsseldorf.

No sooner had the emails to exhibitors and potential interested parties been sent out on 9 May than the first registrations for boot 2024 were received by the team. “The manufacturers are keen to secure a good stand for boot 2024”, says Arne von Heimendahl (HeimendahlA@Messe-Duesseldorf.de), Senior Project Manager for sailing and motor boats in the team. Lena Beckmann (BeckmannL@Messe-Duesseldorf.de), as Senior Project Manager, is in charge of equipment and accessories, diving, tourism, charter and houseboats: “Many companies and destinations that we didn’t have on board in 2023 visited us at the fair and have already expressed their interest in participating next year in January.” Her colleague Caroline Mühl (MuehlC@Messe-Dusseldorf.de), who as Senior Manager is the team’s contact person for surfing, canoeing and kayaking as well as maritime art, is delighted: “From this year, boot is the main sponsor of the surf festival on the German Island Fehmarn and is a great partner in the top European event for surfers. This will further strengthen the presentation of surfing at boot. In addition, we are active in the promotional tour ‘Paddling is Fun’ for canoeing and SUP sports.” The well-known partnerships with the regattas in Kiel and Travemünde, the North Sea Week and the “Rund Um” on Lake Constance confirm the fair’s long-standing ties with sailing.

Petros Michelidakis emphasizes the plus points of participating in boot: “Our visitors are professionals, whether experts or hobby sportsmen. 70 percent have a sailing, motorboat or diving licence. 92 percent are very satisfied with their visit to the fair. And 94 percent would recommend a visit to boot to others.” There is also great satisfaction on the exhibitor side. For example, 85 per cent of the companies state that they were able to acquire new customers and 75 per cent report numerous direct sales at the fair. Michelidakis: “Participating in boot 2024 is a worthwhile, sales-promoting and thus very promising marketing measure that will certainly have a positive impact on the start of the 2024 water sports season. We are very much looking forward to our small – 55th – anniversary next year.”

We can all help bring nature home to our neighbourhoods. This story begins with a plan to crowdsource a network of do-it-yourself “national parks” and some keen community volunteers who filled a canoe with flowers.

A decade ago, volunteers planted a beat-up canoe, retired from active service, in a downtown Toronto green space at the Fort York historical site. They drilled it with holes for drainage, filled it with soil and transformed it into a planter filled with native wildflowers.

The initial aim was to plant canoes in parks and schoolyards along the old Garrison Creek, a “lost river” that had been incorporated into the city’s subterranean sewer system in the late 19th century. Each canoe would be a nod to the not-too-distant ecological past when the creek ran through the neighbourhood, and would provide much-needed habitat for local bees and butterflies.

Over the next three years, volunteers planted dozens of repurposed canoes throughout Toronto, Markham and Richmond Hill. Today, the canoe garden network stretches from Cape Breton to Vancouver Island, providing pollen and nectar patches for local critters and whimsical native plant demonstration gardens for passersby.

The idea to plant a canoe fleet was inspired by American author and entomologist Douglas Tallamy. In his book Bringing Nature Home, Tallamy offered a novel way to increase biodiversity in communities. Instead of relying on government agencies to establish green spaces like parks and conservation reserves, he encouraged residents to create “Homegrown National Parks.” Unlike traditional national parks, these loose patchworks of habitat would be citizen-led. They could be on private or public lands and, most importantly, planted with native plants, shrubs and trees that support local insects and wildlife.

The David Suzuki Foundation took up Tallamy’s challenge to create Canada’s first Homegrown National Park and enlisted the help of a couple dozen volunteers, including Toronto resident Aidan Dahlin Nolan, who became one of the first Homegrown Park Rangers in 2013.

After a few years of plantings, events and musical parades, the Homegrown National Park Project morphed into the Butterflyway Project in 2017. Still Ranger-powered, it’s expanded from a local greening initiative into a national network of volunteers creating Butterflyways — neighbourhood-scale habitat corridors for pollinators and other wildlife.

It’s now come full circle. The David Suzuki Foundation is collaborating with the new U.S.-based Homegrown National Park organization Tallamy co-founded. People in Canada can now officially join this growing movement by uploading their native plant gardens to the Canadian Homegrown National Park Map. The goal is to highlight how much is happening on the ground — stitching together a growing international patchwork of individual actions into one inspiring movement.

The project is a lot of fun, but it’s motivated by troubling trends for the tiny creatures that run the world: insects. Despite being the planet’s largest and most diverse group of organisms, insect populations have dropped by 45 per cent over the past 40 years as a result of industrial agriculture, urbanization, invasive species and climate change. In rural areas, natural habitat has been replaced by monoculture crops maintained with chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Urban areas are characterized by impermeable surfaces, high temperatures and non-native vegetation — all of which lead to fewer insects.

The good news is that insect devastation isn’t inevitable. Each one of us can play a hands-on role in helping bring back local populations. Contributing to grassroots habitat-creation initiatives like the award-winning Butterflyway Project and adding plantings to the Homegrown National Park Map are small, simple actions that, when multiplied by thousands of volunteers and groups and agencies, will make a big difference.

Douglas Tallamy is a scientist who is able to communicate complicated concepts, such as insect collapses and conservation, in simple and inspiring ways. Decades into his tireless efforts to bring nature home, he argues that the task is not as enormous as it seems. “You can’t reverse insect declines by yourself, but if we each do our own small part, not only can we restore insect populations, we will create the largest collective conservation effort in history,” he wrote in a 2020 Washington Post article.

All it takes is a couple of trays of native wildflowers, gardening gloves and a gentler approach to managing our yards and neighbourhoods — and perhaps an old canoe.
