The Aqualung Group and Whites Drywear, owned by Frank White, have come to an agreement whereby Whites Drywear will begin production of drysuits in Saanichton, B.C., commencing October 2nd, 2023.
Whites Drywear is assuming the factory space where Aqualung has operated since 2010, in the building owned by Mr. White. Whites will produce drysuits under its own Whites Drywear brand name and for Aqualung’s brands under contract.

Mr. White and his factory staff have a long history in the industry with combined experience adding up to close to 350 years. With Mr. Whites knowledge of manufacturing, product development and sales he says he looks forward to the coming years doing what he loves most.

“It is great to have the team back together and operate my own factory again. I am proud to say we are the leading edge in the manufacturing of drysuits (we are the oldest continuous running drysuit factory in North America). SeaLife, creator of the SportDiver Underwater Housing for Smartphones, has added a new Magenta color-correcting filter for green water to their SportDiver line.

SeaLife already includes a red filter with the SportDiver for blue water. The filters are designed to restore and correct for color-loss underwater, especially in the red color spectrum. They’re made of an optical acrylic that uses proprietary color pigments. 

These filters are most effective at depths of 3 to 18 m and are easily attachable and removeable to the SportDiver optical lens frame while underwater.  

The color filters may be used with or without external underwater lights, depending on the shooting distance and water conditions.   The filter also serves as a protective cover for the SportDiver’s optical glass port. 

A lanyard is included for attaching the filter to the housing to prevent loss.

Around 7,100 (plus 345 sold in Canada) Huish BCDs, including OceanPro, Excursion, and Hera, were announced for recall June 15, 2023.

During use, the handle for the weight pockets in the Scuba Diving Buoyancy Compensating Device can break. If this happens, the user will be unable to dump weight pockets during an emergency ascent to the surface, potentially resulting in drowning.

The recalled devices include the following models: Oceanic OceanPro, Oceanic Excursion, and Oceanic Hera with serial numbers: 608262 through 695909, 1170357 through 1180342, 1200001 through 1200070 and 20031001 through 22082698. Only these models in any of these serial number ranges and QLR4 Pocket Handles that DO NOT contain a date code on the underside are included in the recall. The brand name Oceanic and the model name are embroidered on the side pockets and a serial number is on the label on the inside of the jacket assembly.

Customers should stop using the recalled SCUBA Diving Buoyancy Compensating Devices immediately and contact Huish Outdoors for free replacement weight pockets. Pockets are easily detachable and replaceable. Customers should depose of their current weight pockets.

There have been 73 reports of broken weight pocket handles received by the company. There have been no reported injuries.

Our innovative Northern Diver line reel has a unique design and it has been manufactured from a combination of anodized aluminium and synthetic polymers, to make it strong, lightweight and corrosion resistant. The free-flowing spool has a thumb operated spool-lock, to ensure controlled line deployment and a ‘sprung’ reel handle. It’s been a while since I took delivery of the Orcatorch D530, but having now finally got this small, recreational dive torch in the water, I have to say, it delivers a lot more than what I initially expected.

Being primarily based in the Red Sea, there is not a great need for torches but when it comes to wreck penetration or searching in small caves and crevasses, it is an essential part of divers kit. The D530 1300 lumens is surprisingly powerful for its size and weight.

The D530 comes with 3 spare o-rings and charging can be done directly via USB and therefore doesn’t need a separate charger. Always a handy consideration when packing kit for a liveaboard. The torch body is well engineered and feels rugged, yet is also surprisingly light.

The switch is easy to use, even with gloves and again is well engineered to avoid accidentally turning it on or off. With 2 settings, the torch can be used for both searching and as a light for basic photography. Having the charge indicator built into the power button is particularly convenient.

Overall, the Orcatorch D530 stands out from other similar priced torches and is a great addition to any recreational divers kit.

The SATCOM-enabled augmented reality scuba dive was a collaborative effort between Vuzix, OPTAC-X, and Kymeta Corporation. Dr. Patrick Fullerton, president and CEO of OPTAC-X, conducted the test just off Electric Beach on the southwest coast of Oahu, Hawaii, on the morning of January 19. The dive team’s goal was to test the visual signal strength of Vuzix Smart Swim® glasses at a certain depth beneath the surface. To conduct the test, the team attached a tactical radio to the divers’ tanks that was in communication with the Kymeta Osprey u8 located in a parking lot, approximately 100 yards from the water’s edge.

Dr. Fullerton, who led the dive team, confirmed a good signal and connectivity 100 yards offshore with signal disruption not occurring until a depth of 21 feet. The test proved that SATCOM connectivity was possible underwater for activities that might include tele-engineering, tactical dive operations, and general technical dive operations use cases.

“We achieved diver connectivity without floating an antenna and in challenging sea conditions 100 yards offshore, providing communication to an SES satellite in geosynchronous equatorial orbit over 22,000 miles away. To our knowledge, this is the first dive of its kind and proves that operational, tactical, and maintenance support can be done at sea anywhere around the world,” said Fullerton. “We were excited to collaborate with such an innovative company as Vuzix on this endeavor and look forward to working with them via our new reseller relationship.”

Torben from DIVEIN.com has been diving with Apple Watch Ultra and testing the Oceanic+ app for two weeks, logging more than 15 dives. He says that “with clear instructions and animations telling you to ‘go up,’ ‘stop’ or ‘start safety stop’ you’re never in doubt on what you should do. This is the most user-friendly dive computer I’ve ever used. The screen is super bright, and all the information you need is clearly displayed”

Aqualung Group have initiated a limited recall on the Apeks Exotec BCD which could cause a loss of buoyancy.

“When the BCD is inflated, the grey pull dump knob retracts towards the stitched channel of the jacket. The channel then prevents the knob from further retracting and slightly opens the dump valve and prevents the BCD from fully inflating. HAZARD: This can result in a loss of buoyancy control and poses injury (decompression sickness) and drowning hazards“

The feedback we have been receiving since the release of the Apple Watch Ultra has been frustration, as buyers anxiously awaited the launch of the Oceanic+ Application that allows the Apple Watch to be turned into a fully fledged dive computer.

Now the wait is over. Oceanic+ is now available on the App Store for free download…although anything beyond snorkelling is a paid subscription.

I do intend to fully review the combined package of Apple Watch Ultra and Oceanic+ but unfortunately for me, I am currently in Egypt and the new Apple Watches are not available here yet. I have downloaded the application and set up seems easy. Registering your details is simple and straight forward and this bodes well for when I finally get to dive with it, and I have to say, I am a little excited for that. Being a long term user of Apple products, and lover of the Apple Watch in particular, my anticipation is a little high.

Rest assured, as soon as I can get my hands on an Apple Watch Ultra, a full review will be forthcoming. Sadly, this puts editors of US and European dive publications ahead of me but I will catch up…I promise!
