When it comes to legendary figures in the diving world, Peter Hughes sits right at the top of the list.

The chance to share time with him – both above and below water – is one not to be missed and that makes Emperor Divers’ trip from Maumere to Ambon on board Emperor Harmoni in October a very special opportunity.

Peter has chosen to be a member of the party on the 12-night adventure when he will be happy to share his knowledge and stories from 65-plus years of diving.

Renowned worldwide as a pioneer of the liveaboard trip, Peter has been diving since the 1950s and has received numerous awards and accolades – not least a place in the DEMA Hall of Fame.

However, despite all he has seen and done over many years, the Banda Sea is a part of the world Peter has yet to explore.

He said: “This is an area of Indonesia I have not experienced before so I am anxious to see everything it has to offer. I am confident I will not be disappointed.

“My experience diving Indonesia has always been Komodo National Park with one trip only to Raja Ampat. I preferred Komodo for some reason but my knowledge of the geography of the Indonesian archipelago is limited at best – even though my wife and I took a cruise there over 21 days in 1983 which was one of the best experiences of our lives.

“I have not been diving for a while now and I am keen to get back underwater. And what better place than somewhere as special as Indonesia.

“In real estate they say it’s about: “location, location, location.” Indonesian diving is: “marine life, marine life, marine life”. The water in Indonesia is very close to, if not actually being, the most prolific place to experience a variety of tropical marine life, from the teeniest to the biggest, in the world today.”

As someone who knows a thing or two about the liveaboards – his DEMA Hall of Fame award was for his part in developing and evolving the industry – Peter is very excited about getting the chance to see Emperor Harmoni for himself.

Our beautiful, traditional phinisi-style vessel only welcomed guests on board for the first time back in September and Peter is keen to get his chance to sample the fantastic experience she offers.

He explained: “I cannot wait to see Harmoni as, from past experience in Indonesia, I know she will be a shipbuilding work of art!

“There are many amazing liveaboards built of steel, aluminium and even fibreglass operating around the world today. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this but I am a traditionalist at heart. I appreciate the workmanship, the great talent that goes into the building of a vessel such as Harmoni.

“Back in the late 1990s I had the privilege and pleasure of being involved with the Ombak Biru which was doing business as the ‘Komodo Dancer’ and then the Dewi Nusantara which was known as ‘Paradise Dancer’. It was when I was able to visit her build site, on the bank of a river in the jungle, that I realised the amazing skill of the traditional shipbuilders of Indonesia.

“What I most look forward to, beside the diving and reconnecting with special friends, is just sitting quietly, perhaps by myself once in a while, with a nice gin and tonic in hand – after all diving, of course – and letting my mind wander as to exactly where and how this amazing vessel came to be and immerse myself into all that it is!”

Not that Peter will be averse to sharing the odd tale or two.

“If I say so myself, I tend to be a quiet and pretty modest individual but under the right circumstances (after a couple of adult beverages) and with the right audience I can go on for hours with my story telling!”

And why choose Emperor for his return to diving?

“A very simple choice – I know any operation under the ownership and control of Alex (Emperor Divers CEO Alex Bryant), and his team will leave nothing to chance and will always offer a first-class experience.”

The Alor & Banda Sea trip takes place from October 8th to 20th and will give you the chance to discover some of the most breathtaking dive sites in Indonesia and learn from one of the most respected names in the diving industry.

And it will be done in fine style as Harmoni provides exceptional accommodation, world-class cuisine, and fantastic amenities. There are very limited spaces left available to join this once-in-a-lifetime trip in the company of a diving legend.

Southern Solitude – A Quieter Way to Dive the Red Sea https://www.thescubanews.com/2023/02/01/southern-solitude-a-quieter-way-to-dive-the-red-sea/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=southern-solitude-a-quieter-way-to-dive-the-red-sea https://www.thescubanews.com/2023/02/01/southern-solitude-a-quieter-way-to-dive-the-red-sea/#respond Wed, 01 Feb 2023 09:12:57 +0000 https://www.thescubanews.com/?p=27267 Sometimes in life it is good to look at the world a little differently – and that is exactly what Emperor Divers have done with their new Red Sea itinerary. Sometimes in life it is good to look at the world a little differently – and that is exactly what Emperor Divers have done with their new Red Sea itinerary.

Brand-new for 2023 is Southern Solitude which sees Emperor go against the flow.

While most trips explore the southern Red Sea following the same pattern, Emperor have developed an itinerary which will give experienced divers the chance to dive the best sites on what should be their quietest days.

Emperor’s Red Sea general manager Luke Atkinson explains: “I speak with our divers all the time, and this year the same thing was said a few times in the south: the diving was great, but there were a lot of boats on the key sites.

Emperor Divers

“While there’s no guarantees in life, Southern Solitude was built on the concept of giving our divers the best chance of visiting the top sites in the south Red Sea on the days when they should be quietest.

“We tapped into the experience of our diving and sailing teams to work this out and give our divers the best possible trip we can imagine. It’s a serious, dive-focused trip, with more than 21 dives on offer, all of them offshore on proper safari sites, and no last night moored in port so divers will have to party on the boat!“

Southern Solitude heads straight out of Port Ghalib and heads immediately for Elphinstone – a site normally visited on the last days of the trip – at the time when most other trips start off heading in the opposite direction.

Emperor take the same approach with Daedalus before it gets busy and then go to the exceptionally remote Rocky and Zabargad Islands – somewhere few Red Sea veterans have even dived.

The rest of the trip continues up through St Johns and Fury Shoals, as many other boats should by now have moved on, and to not stress out the last diving day by rushing to port, they keep the boat out all night offering the chance for up to four dives.

It all works to provide guests the greatest chance of seeing the delights of the southern Red Sea with fewer other visitors.

There are spaces available on this fantastic itinerary in May, August and September so visit https://www.emperordivers.com/liveaboard-itinerary/southern-solitude/ to find out more and come dive the Red Sea at its most peaceful.

Emperor Divers has a new home in Marsa Alam.

With the Marina Lodge still closed, Emperor has opened a new shop located in the brand-new Port Ghalib Marina City complex.

Emperor Divers Marsa Alam

And, as locations go, it is the best yet for Emperor who are this year celebrating their 30th anniversary of diving in Egypt.

Their new shop in Marina City is situated among all the retail, hotels, restaurants right on the Port Ghalib waterfront and is right next door to where the Emperor fleet is based.

Emperor Divers Marsa Alam

Emperor Divers Red Sea general manager, Luke Atkinson, said: “We have all the facilities you’d expect, from equipment rinse to luggage store, as well as a fully-stocked shop.

Emperor Divers Marsa Alam

“Our boats – Emperor Skye and the larger liveaboards – can be walked to in a couple of minutes or, if you prefer, by zodiac tender! So, whether you’re joining us for daily diving trips, for courses or on week-long liveaboard safaris it’s a must visit.

Emperor Divers Marsa Alam

“We are still offering our complimentary collection service from all hotels within 20km of Port Ghalib so, wherever you choose to stay, there’s every reason to dive with us.

“It’s a new location but the same convenience and the same great team.”

Emperor Divers is restarting its Instructor Development Courses in Egypt – and for some they could prove life changing.

The opening of Emperor’s new Sharm el Sheikh dive centre earlier this year has provided the opportunity to once again become a PADI 5 Star Career Development Centre – the highest possible award rating – and means we can offer high-quality training under the guidance of course director Chris Azab, with the goal to kick-start new careers in the dive industry.

Emperor Divers
Course director Chris Azab

All IDC candidates are guaranteed a four-week internship directly after the exam to develop their instructor skills further under the guidance of our team, and a limited few will be able to take up a further four-week internship on our liveaboard fleets in the Red Sea, Maldives or Indonesia. Incredible opportunities to dive some of the best destinations on Earth while building your skills for a future in diving.

It could really be the opportunity for someone to turn their passion into their profession.

Emperor’s Red Sea general manager Luke Atkinson said: “As we celebrate 30 years in business, it’s time for Emperor to re-focus on one of our biggest successes of that time, creating professional divers.

“Many of our current, and historical, diving team did their IDC with Emperor and, for the next few years at least as travel recovers from the pandemic, we expect there will be opportunities for the best new instructors to join our team or start their diving career elsewhere. We’ll ensure every candidate is given the best training possible.”

Emperor Divers
Course director Chris Azab with her husband Waheed

PADI course director Chris Azab added: “I’m very excited to be part of Team Emperor.

“I’ve taught many IDCs at various different locations but the facilities at Emperor’s Sharm base are second to none; a perfect housereef to train on is a few steps away and, for the days we use the boat, the jetty is next door. With everything so convenient, we can focus our time on developing your skills, having fun and enjoying some of the best weeks of your life.”

Emperor will be running two IDCs in 2022 with first taking place between July 10-17 and the second between November 27 and December 4 with the tuition available in English, German, Dutch or Arabic.

The joy of being back under Egypt’s beautiful waters is proving a strong pull for visitors, according to Red Sea-specialists Emperor Divers.

Coupled with an increase in both scheduled and low-cost flights to the Egyptian resorts, demand is high for those wanting a return to diving in this popular region.

“It’s been amazing to see divers coming back after such a long time,” said Emperor’s General Manager Luke Atkinson.

Emperor

“Our guests tell us time and time again how special that first trip back under the surface is.

“Our boats and team are as you remember – and so is that feeling of being submerged in pristine waters.”

Among those who have relished the return of more regular flights to the area is Megumi Gotada – the latest of Emperor Divers’ Covid Heroes.

Covid Heroes was an initiative put in place by Emperor to recognise people who have stepped up during the pandemic by rewarding them with free liveaboard trips in the Maldives and the Red Sea.

Emperor

Megumi – the second of the eight chosen Heroes to take up her trip – is a music therapist from Berlin who volunteered to work in her hospital’s Covid department and used her skills to help ease the suffering of those afflicted by severe Coronavirus complications.

Emperor

With travel opportunities increasing, Megumi was able to fly into Hurghada and join up with Emperor Elite for her very well-earned holiday.

Emperor Divers have been running a full service for some time but, with travel restrictions only easing fully in recent days, there are still a few spaces available. The routes of “Simply The Best” (14/10 departures from €999) and “South & St Johns” from €949 are proving popular.

Spaces are still available by contacting Emperor at reservations@emperordivers.com

In February Emperor Divers launched the Covid Diver Heroes initiative, aiming to recognise 8 people who have stepped up in the pandemic with free liveaboard trips in the Maldives and the Red Sea. We received hundreds of nominations and left it up to a varied panel of loyal staff to sift through the entries. All inspired, many amazed and some brought tears. What is clear is that divers are awesome, and it came as no surprise that within the international underwater community there were so many selfless, empathetic heroes. Our panel have made the final choice for the 8th liveaboard prize, this time for a trip of a lifetime in The Maldives, Nominated by his cousin, Alex Chan, this is his story:

COVID

“There will be no greater reward for this selfless cousin of mine to win a liveaboard trip to the Maldives where he can find solace in SCUBA diving, the holiday activity he enjoys most. I have not seen him physically for more than a year nor did his parents because he has isolated himself for fears of inadvertently bringing the virus home.
“I, Alex, nominate KK Tan, 38, a doctor from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for his tireless efforts as a supporting role to the Frontliners during this time of pandemic. By day, he takes up the administrative role to procure quality medical equipment and ensure proper distribution to health facilities throughout the country an uphill task in view of the rising number of cases in my country. By night, he would return to his former hospital to help out with the outpatient cases there.  If not working on weekends, he would visit a couple of old folks home to provide encouragement, free medical consultations as well as deliver medications where able. He tells me always “Since I cannot go diving in the sea, I might as well dive in the sea of COVID19. There are many beautiful things to see here too”
Alex has been in contact with KK and told us “He was ecstatic! Thank you for selecting my nominee for the final winner for the liveaboard. I’m sure it will be a beautiful light for him at the end of the tunnel.”

COVID

As a roundup, here is the full list of winners who will enter our Covid Diver Heroes Hall of Fame:

  • Deboraha Brabham, UK
  • Noam Har-Tzvi, Israel
  • Megumi Gotada, Germany
  • Phuong Cao, USA
  • Ingrid Stubelius, Sweden
  • Lily Lancaster, UK
  • Susana Garcia, Spain
  • KK Tan, Malaysia

We have even been lucky enough to meet Susana Garcia already, she has just been out on a liveaboard trip in the Red Sea and we were able to give her a trophy as well as spend time with one of our Heroes.

We gave away our last Red Sea liveaboard trip to another worthy hero nominated through Emperor’s #coviddiverheroes initiative, where we recognise stories of amazing divers who went above and beyond during the pandemic. Our 7th hero goes back to a similar theme of most of the heroes so far, as she works in healthcare, right on the front line of the pandemic. Jaime Callejon Bejarano nominated Susana Garcia, from Madrid, Spain with the following:

Emperor Divers

“As the heroine of each and every one of the patients and families who have passed through her hands during 20 years, not only during this pandemic, and I do not find better way to thank her than being one of the lucky ones to enjoy with the Emperor Team one of her great passions…. Diving! and… diving in the RED SEA !! Thank you for this opportunity but it’s SO difficult to resume only in 200 words! Here goes:

Intensive Care Unit Nurse for 20 years, she treats patients in critical situations when medical and human treatment is vital.  In the early moments of the pandemic, without enough protective equipment, all her unit risked their lives to give medical and humane treatment to the patients, reorganizing their unit to attend all the critical patients, working as a great TEAM.

They were taking care of critical patients, going home after their work, afraid of being infected themselves, afraid of seeing their families… but they never missed their work shift, their patients, working to find possible treatments, ALL TOGETHER.

Not only doing their job but giving affection to the patients, helping them to communicate with their families by video calls, even in the worst cases, holding the patient’s hands in their last breath, so as they did not leave this world alone. All these patients’ families, unable to see their loved ones because of isolation, never stop appreciating. “Thank you for not leaving them alone”

We have been in touch with Susana who has already started sharing the news of her award with friends and family, and we are so happy to be able to recognise another amazing person with a well-deserved break in the coming months or years.

Emperor Divers

And that means we only have one more award to give away, but it’s a big one with one final dream trip on a Maldives liveaboard up for grabs to our final hero. Entries for nominations close on the 5th June, so this really is the last chance to get your hero the recognition they deserve!

Final winner will be announced by 14th June. Final entry for nominations 5th June ’21.

The curtain is starting to close on Emperor’s #coviddiverheroes initiative, where we recognise stories of amazing divers who went above and beyond during the pandemic. Our 6th hero Lily Lancaster is a bit different from the previous 5 in that she doesn’t work in healthcare. In fact, at 13 years old she has plenty of time to get into that if she chooses, but right now she has shown maturity beyond her years and great compassion and we are proud to share her story, as nominated by her Uncle Martin Lancaster:

“I would like to nominate my niece Lily Lancaster, age 13, for a Red Sea trip. Lily has influenced so many people of our community by showing care and selflessness. Throughout the year Lily does random acts of kindness by giving out chocolates, flowers and gifts to random people to make them smile. During these trying times Lily has gone above and beyond to give our community high spirits by making keyrings with kind messages on them and leaving them out for people to find. Over Halloween, as children could not go trick or treating, Lily dressed up and brought sweets out of her own money and handed out over 500 bags to the local children! Lily also brought selection boxes for children to hand out throughout December; Santa was unable to do his usual rounds so Lily arranged for him to join her in handing these out. This year Lily at Easter Lily handed out almost 400 Easter eggs to the local children. These are only a few things that Lily does; we all have great admiration for someone so young to have such empathy and a heart of gold. Lily has made thousands of people smile during these difficult times and continues to do so.”

We have been in touch with Lily who can’t wait for her trip. Her family have been sharing the news of her award far and wide and we will be so happy to host Lily on one of our liveaboard trips in the next couple of years.

We only have 2 more awards to give away! One Red Sea and one Maldives trips are still available, so we are coming up to the last chance for people to nominate their hero. In fact, entries for the Red Sea awards close on Thursday 20thMay!

Do you know a diver who has been heroic this past year? Emperor know that, worldwide, people have had to step up during this pandemic which has affected so many lives. They want to reward some real heroes with free liveaboard trips in the Red Sea or Maldives.

Luke Atkinson, Emperor’s Red Sea Manager, said “this initiative is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to all those hundreds of people who have taken a selfless interest in looking after the vulnerable in their community. Examples could include healthworkers, carers or those who have come out of retirement to volunteer locally, but really we know there are many other ways people have been heroic. “

Emperor want to hear from people who know a heroic diver who would love to have a free liveaboard trip to look forward to in the future. People need to nominate a Covid Hero Diver and tell Emperor (in 100 – 200 words) why they deserve a free trip, and whether they would prefer the Red Sea or the Maldives. A multinational panel of Emperor’s most loyal and compassionate staff will judge the entries and pick a winner every 2 weeks for the next 2 months. There is 1 remaining Red Sea and 1 more Maldives liveaboard to be earned, so get nominating and give that hero a reward for their amazing work!

Winners will be announced by 14th and 28th of each month. Final entries for Red Sea by 20th May ‘21 and Maldives 5th June ’21.

Thanks to the #coviddiverheroes initiative we keep getting great stories of amazing divers who went above and beyond during the pandemic. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that so far every one of our recognised heroes has been working in the hospitals throughout, deep down we all know that that is where the effects of corona are most keenly felt. At this point we get to recognise our 5th winner, another awesome hero from the diving community working in the intensive care wards battling the terrible effects of this virus. Ingrid Stubelius aged 38 nominated by her husband Fredrik wins a free liveaboard trip in the Maldives, and here is her story:

COVID

On the pictures here is my wife, mother of our kids, my buddy underwater, in her happy place and surroundings. You can Google her name and the images that come up are far away from wetsuits, night dives and liveaboard trips unfortunately. Luckily, she can show up at home with a nice mask squeeze from time to time due to various protective equipment!

For more than a year she has spent countless hours, nights, and weekends, to help the sickest people at the intensive care at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. She is specialized in anesthesia and intensive care but except from helping you and me and our fellow citizen she has also being a big support for the whole medical team as she is also a delegate from the Swedish Medical Association. The focus as the safety representative has been on making sure people don’t get burned out, that they can get the needed and well-deserved breaks between shifts and to make sure all people, doctors, and patients, are being treated in the safest way possible, at the safest places available.

COVID

Because of her commitment, she’s the hero for many heroes and her Superwoman Crocs couldn’t fit better!

We have been in touch with Ingrid who took some time out to write us this: Dear hero panel! Thank you so much for this amazing piece of news! As you can understand the announcement, and Fredrik’s nomination, brought a little tear to my eye. As Fredrik says, under water is indeed a happy place for me and it is not an exaggeration to say that the dream of diving again is one of the things that have given me energy in this long and terrible fight against the pandemic. And joining an Emperor liveaboard in the Maldives is truly a dream come true! The thought alone makes me want to get on a plane right away, but it will have to wait a while longer. Thank you again, Ingrid

We are just over halfway but the initiative is still running and we would love to hear about more heroes, as we have 3 more to award in the next 6 weeks!

We are at the halfway point with our #coviddiverheroes initiative and we are still receiving worthy nominations every day! At this point we get to recognise our 4th winner, another awesome hero from the diving community with an inspirational story of selflessness through the pandemic. Nominated by David White, Phuong Cao wins a free liveaboard trip in the Maldives when she can finally take some time off, and here is her story:

Covid Diver Heroes

I, David White, would like to nominate Phuong Cao (36) for her tireless efforts fighting this pandemic. Not satisfied with being a frontline hospitalist in New York she took a second job on the COVID team in Guam to treat patients under even tougher conditions on her weeks off! She continues to commute 7750 miles each way and apply herself to both jobs for three months already and counting. Her energy level has no limits and she’s only happy when those in her care are on the mend. I think she definitely deserves a break! I guess the Maldives would be the best choice for her as I know she has dived with you in the Red Sea already.

We have been in touch with Phuong who had this to say “Wow what a surprise! Thank you for the recognition. Holding my breath until I get back underwater”

We feel the halfway point is a good chance to remind people that the initiative is still running and we would love to hear about more heroes, as we have 4 more to award in the next 2 months!

In February Emperor Divers launched the Covid Diver Heroes initiative, where we aim to recognise 8 people who have stepped up in the pandemic with free liveaboard trips in the Maldives and the Red Sea. We are delighted to share with you the story of our third hero Megumi Gotada, who wins a free Red Sea liveaboard trip. Megumi was nominated by two different people showing the effect she has had in her community, and so here we have the nomination from her friend and colleague Katharina Berger:

“My name is Katharina. I want to nominate my friend and colleague Megumi Gotada as a hero. She is working as a music therapist in a hospital in Berlin at the covid department, playing the lyre for people who are suffering of severe complications. It was her free choice to accept to work in the covid department, and she decided to do so, although her family and friends strongly tried to prevent her from doing so. What she is doing is very important, because the music gives warmth, hope and care for the soul. Most of the patients, who are isolated in their rooms in order to prevent any spread of infection, are elderly people, suffering from shortness of breath, and also from anxiety, depression and loneliness, which are states of mind that are really not helpful in the process of recovery. The beauty of the tender sound of the lyre and Megumis’ warm-hearted presence strengthen the people to gain hope and health again.”

Nominations are still pouring in daily and so far we have awarded three of eight heroes, and are welcoming more nominations from anywhere in the global diving community. Megumi was judged to be the deserving winner of a Red Sea liveaboard trip and we have been in contact with her already, she has already been in contact to say how pleased she is. We still have 2 Red Sea and 3 further Maldives liveaboards to award to other heroes already nominated or yet to be nominated.

In February Emperor Divers launched the Covid Diver Heroes initiative, where we aim to recognise 8 people who have stepped up in the pandemic with free liveaboard trips in the Maldives and the Red Sea. We are honoured to share with you the story of our second hero Noam Har-Tzvi, who wins a free Maldives liveaboard trip. Noam was nominated by her brother Adi for the following reasons:

COVID Heroes

“During the Corona in Israel, Noam founded a voluntary initiative called “Staying Together” – Connecting corona patients and their families. She couldn’t stand the thought of elderly people dying alone in hospitals isolated from their families, so she decided to take action.

Together with an amazing team of volunteers she raised donations of tablets and laptops, programmed them so they can be used by remote control when the patients are in a bad shape and the medical staff is too busy, organized a group of volunteers that operated the devices from long distance and allowed (and still) thousands of video calls between the families and the corona patients to happen.

COVID Heroes

They connected children, parents and grandparents, wives and husbands, new mothers and their babies and more. The video calls immediately improved the spirit for all, allowing the patients to get love and support from their dearest and get better. Sadly, some of those calls were the last time they talked and gave them the chance to say goodbye.

The initiative helped in 8 hospitals and Geriatric institutions in Israel and the devices are still used in Corona and ICU units by the medical staff”

COVID Heroes

We are still receiving amazing stories of heroes from all over the globe and are amazed by the great things some members of the diving community have achieved. Noam was judged to be the deserving winner of a Maldives liveaboard trip and we have been in contact with her already, and she is thrilled and humbled to receive that. We still have 3 Red Sea and 3 further Maldives liveaboards to award to other heroes already nominated or yet to be nominated.

Earlier in February Emperor Divers launched the Covid Diver Heroes initiative, where we aim to recognise 8 people who have stepped up in the pandemic with free liveaboard trips in the Maldives and the Red Sea.

Emperor COVID Hero

We are honoured to share with you the story of our first hero, nominated by Dave Walker:

I’d like to nominate, Deborah Braham, a friend I made on a diving trip to Tobago.

Deborah is an NHS anaesthetist and early on when PPE was in short supply, she just went on WhatsApp and organised visors and more directly for her hospital. Deborah just made it happen.

Deborah married another diver not long after we met. With her in the UK and us in Switzerland, we haven’t managed to meet up since she had children. Whatever, in Yorkshire speak, she’s a “lovely lass” who definitely deserves a good holiday.

Emperor COVID Hero

The BBC covered the story of The Visor Army she created:

A doctor who urged volunteers to make visors for NHS staff due to a shortage at her hospital says she is “overwhelmed” by the response.

Without (visors), doctors and nurses are at high risk of being contaminated by aerosolised particles containing the virus during procedures such as intubation or when they are caring for patients on ventilators.

“Initially it was just people I knew who came on board, then it was people I didn’t know,” Dr Braham said. “Within a short time this whole thing had grown so big with so many people wanting to help.”

More than 75,000 face shields have been produced just weeks after Deborah Braham appealed for help on WhatsApp.

Emperor COVID Hero

We at Emperor are in awe of the quality of the stories received so far, which number over 50! Dr. Braham was judged to be the deserving winner of a Red Sea liveaboard trip and we have been in contact with her to arrange that.

We still have 3 Red Sea and 4 Maldives liveaboards to award to other heroes already nominated or yet to be nominated.

Book your ‘Best of Maldives’ diving experience during September 2020 with Emperor Maldives at the super low price of €890 euro / £ 809 GBP and be allocated a space on either Voyager, Serenity or Leo on arrival.

Emperor understand why our guests want to book at the last minute but that makes it more difficult for us to plan guaranteed departures. To solve the problem Emperor have introduced a price that will guarantee a place on either Voyager, Leo or Serenity doing a ‘Best of Maldives’ itinerary.

Commenting on the Lucky Trip idea, Alex Bryant Area Manager for Emperor Maldives said, “ Having this flexibility allows us to fill a boat enough to make trips viable and most importantly means our guests can book, knowing their trip will happen on one of our comfortable and well thought of boats.“

Currently the diving is uncrowded and Emperor hope their Lucky Trip offer will make it easier for divers to come and experience some great diving in the near future. Prices start from   890 Euro /809 GBP

We’ll explain how Dolly got involved later. When two divers told us they were planning to row across the Atlantic we thought, Wow, lockdown has certainly got to them. But No, Flo and Hannah are both ace rowers and have long wanted to take up the challenge of rowing the Atlantic and so, with their good friend Georgie, formed their team “Atlantic Antics” and are now training hard towards starting the 3000 mile Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in December 2020. https://www.atlanticantics2020.com/our-partners.

Atlantic Antics 2020

So how does Dolly fit in? Well, the girls named their new R45 Elite boat from Rannoch “Dolly Parton”, so no doubt they’ll know the words of a few famous songs by the end of the trip. The record crossing stands at 29 days but usually takes about 60, so the girls will definitely be working longer hours than ‘9 to 5’. (Sorry, had to be done). Flo told us, “Our aim is to row across the Atlantic in under 45 days, although, just like diving, this will be very much weather-permitting!”

Atlantic Antics 2020

A challenge like this takes team work and lots of hard work so here at Team Emperor we thought that, while there is so little good news around, we’d support the girls and let the diving community know about their amazing effort so we can all offer them our support before and during the challenge. They are raising money for charity and you can see the details here https://www.atlanticantics2020.com/mission

You can follow their progress on the Talisker website when the challenge starts on Dec 12th2020.

Emperor Maldives has opened its first Maldives resort dive centre at Reveries Diving Village on Gan, Laamu Atoll. Here guests can combine superb channel diving with a unique experience on a locally inhabited island.

Emperor Maldives

Perfectly located on the west coast of the locally inhabited island of Gan in Laamu Atoll, Reveries has full resort facilities and the chance to experience the ‘real Maldives’.

With its own private ‘bikini’ beach in front of the hotel, great channel and drift diving, sharks, mantas and masses of big stuff, this is the way to get in touch with local Maldives living.

Of course, it’s also the ideal way to combine a resort stay with one of Emperor’s liveaboard trips (cruise & stay) in the south of the Maldives.

Diving from Laamu’s untouched and remote location rarely disappoints with its rich diversity of life offering something for divers, snorkellers and beach lovers.

Emperor Maldives

Emperor’s diving centre is located right on Reveries’ beach front with access to a shallow, sandy lagoon suitable for beginner divers and divers wanting to refresh their skills. For the more experienced, there’s the magical Maldives adrenalin-charged current diving.

Daily diving boats built in traditional style, known as dhonis, take guests to dive the nearby sites where a myriad of marine life awaits; hard corals, magical macro life and turtles swimming around the inner reef. Then there are the big pelagics, which can be enjoyed by divers with experience; eagle rays, snappers, nurse sharks, grey reef sharks, mantas and more.

Emperor Maldives consistently offers value, variety, quality, service, professionalism, easy booking, local knowledge, flexibility and fast response to guest requests, as seen in the myriad of 5 Star Feefo guest reviews.

The accolade, which honours hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor.

Berghia caerulescens (yellow variety) Emperor Divers El Gouna has won this four times whilst Emperor Divers Marsa Alam has won the award for the fifth year in a row.

The Certificate of Excellence accounts for the quality, quantity and recency of reviews submitted by travellers on TripAdvisor over a 12-month period. To qualify, a business must maintain an overall TripAdvisor bubble rating of at least four out of five, have a minimum number of reviews and must have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months.

“We’re very proud of the teams at Marsa Alam and El Gouna for winning the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence. Many thanks to all our guests who took the time to complete a review,” said Luke Atkinson, General Manager for Emperor Divers Red Sea. “Being recognised like this always creates a feel-good factor, especially when it comes from those very people who enjoyed the diving and service with us.”

“This recognition helps travellers identify and book properties that regularly deliver great service. TripAdvisor is proud to play this integral role in helping travellers feel more confident in their booking decisions,” says TripAdvisor’s Vice President of Industry Marketing, Heather Leisman.

Located directly in Naama Bay, the centre is close to the jetty and ready to take guests to dive incredible sites such as Tiran and Ras Mohamed.

Emperor Sharm

“Sharm diving is at its absolute best for decades as dive sites have had a few years to recover from the crowds. Stunning hard and soft corals and amazing marine life encounters abound in some of the clearest waters the Red Sea has to offer,” says General Manager, Luke Atkinson. “The fish schooling event of Ras Mohamed in summer is truly world class and the chance to experience it with diver numbers similar to the 1990s should not be missed.”

Emperor is sharing with the Werner Lau/ Sinai Divers centre in Helnan Marina Hotel where guests will have access to a house reef in Naama Bay and top class facilities as well as being close to a range of hotels for convenience. Divers’ favourite boats, Emperor Shorouk and Emperor Marcus, will be running regularly to the amazing local sites and, of course, to Ras Mohamed and Tiran. Emperor’s small instructor team will be headed up by the familiar face of Elise, an Emperor Sharm legend.

Emperor Sharm

Direct flights to Sharm come from Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria with carriers such as TUIfly, FTI and Germania. Indirect flights via Istanbul with Pegasus and Turkish airlines are excellent for divers due to a generous baggage allowance, which is also the case with Egyptair via Cairo.

Make 2018 the year to come and dive in Sharm with Emperor; it will be the best decision you make!

Emperor Divers has teamed up with Paul ‘Duxy’ Duxfield for 2018 to bring some relaxing trips suited to divers who like flexibility and, of course, photographers and videographers.

Emperor Divers

Duxy has been at the forefront of underwater photography and travel for many years and brings with him a light-hearted take on the diving world and how it has changed the way we now take underwater photographs and video. He combines his time helping people to choose and use cameras, housings, strobes and lenses, escorting trips and running workshops around the world.

With more than 40 escorted trips under his belt to the Red Sea and further afield, Duxy continues to develop new ways to pass on knowledge and share his love of diving and underwater photography to divers.

Emperor Divers

Emperor has two trips planned on two Red Sea liveaboards with at least three ‘open deck’ days a week. Open deck diving means guests are free to dive with their buddy between 6am to 6pm at times that suit. Flexibility is the key. On both itineraries there will be three guided ‘excursion dives’ from either the two Emperor guides and/or with Duxy himself. Sample itineraries are:

North & Easy with Duxy

Emperor Superior

25 May – 1 June 2018

€1099 / £979

Dive sites include: Sha’ab El Erg, Stingray Station, Shark and Yolanda, Thomas, Jackson, Dunraven, the Thistlegorm, the Barge.

South for Winter with Duxy

Emperor Elite

30 November – 7 December 2018

€1119 / £999

Dive sites include: Abu Dabab, Sha’ab Hamam, Sha’ab Abu Galawa Soraya, Sha’ab Sataya, Hamada Wreck, Elphinstone, Marsa Shona.

Other upgrades include a completely new sun shade area on the sun deck, creating more shade for guests to relax under.

All rooms on the lower deck have also been redecorated as well as upgrades to the shower areas to ensure a more comfortable shower.

The response to the ‘new look’ Emperor Virgo from recent guests has been extremely positive with repeaters especially commenting on the increased social space and comfort.
