In a plea for public assistance, local authorities are seeking witnesses to come forward in the wake of a tragic incident on the Central Coast that claimed the life of a 51-year-old man. The victim passed away in hospital after being rescued from the water at Terrigal Haven last month.

On the evening of Friday, October 20, 2023, emergency services responded to distress calls reporting an unconscious man in the water at approximately 5:45 pm. According to police reports, the man had been engaged in scuba diving with a friend when adverse weather conditions prompted their return to shore. During an attempt to ascend the rocks, the 51-year-old was struck by a powerful wave, causing him to slip, hit his head, and fall back into the water.

A Good Samaritan, identified as an unidentified surfer, courageously entered the water on his surfboard, successfully retrieving the injured man. Once ashore, CPR was administered until the arrival of paramedics from NSW Ambulance. Despite immediate efforts to stabilize him, the victim was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in critical condition. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries a few days later, as confirmed by hospital authorities who subsequently notified the police.

Brisbane Water Police District detectives have taken charge of the investigation on behalf of the Coroner. They are now seeking the public’s help in identifying the heroic surfer who played a pivotal role in rescuing the victim. Detectives believe that this individual may possess crucial information to aid their ongoing inquiries.

As the investigation progresses, anyone with pertinent information is strongly encouraged to reach out to Gosford Police Station or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

In the interest of maintaining confidentiality, individuals can also submit information through the Crime Stoppers website: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. The public is reminded to refrain from reporting information via NSW Police social media pages. The authorities assure that all provided information will be treated with the utmost discretion.

A scuba diver reportedly found himself in a challenging situation off the coast of Miami, left treading water for approximately half an hour after the dive boat he was on started taking on water. The incident occurred near Sunny Isles Beach on a Wednesday morning, according to the Coast Guard.

The unnamed diver was left stranded when the vessel began experiencing difficulties and had to return to shore without him, as reported by the Miami Herald. Following a call received by the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue around 9:30 a.m., a fire rescue boat promptly picked up the diver at 10 a.m. Fortunately, the diver was safely returned to the Haulover Marina Center and did not require any medical attention.

A video captured by WSVN showcased the diver swimming towards the rescue boat, located approximately 600 yards offshore

PADI Pros train with OceanShot partners for underwater coral reef panel at the Global Citizen Forum at COP28

PADI®. is joining OceanShot co-founders for the historic underwater panel on positive ocean change at the Global Citizen Forum, which is taking place alongside COP28 in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE December 6-7 2023. The first-of-its-kind underwater panel will dive deep on the importance for coral reef protection to elevate the urgent need for ocean action.

PADI’s CEO and President Drew Richardson will join Dr. Brosnan and Mr. DeJoria at the Global Citizen Forum’s first-ever underwater panel to purposefully descend beneath the surface in the hopes of calling people around the globe to positive ocean action and inspiring them to both explore and save the ocean.

OceanShot is a coral reef ecosystem restoration project co-founded by globally-recognized marine scientist and climate risk expert Dr. Deborah Brosnan, and global philanthropist, environmentalist and entrepreneur John Paul DeJoria, launched in partnership with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. The initiative uses technology that mimics the design and shape of natural reefs to restore coral and invite back marine life, as well as protect nearby coastal communities from storm surge and sea level rise.

Dr. Richardson is one of the most influential people in scuba diving and has transformed PADI’s mission to create a billion ocean TorchbearersTM.  who are taking local action for global impact and united by a shared vision to achieve balance between humanity and the ocean.

OceanShot’s first living-lab hub, designed to be a place where innovators can test their technologies aimed at environmental protection, was deployed in Antigua and Barbuda. In June 2021, the Global Citizen Forum adopted OceanShot as one of its supported flagship initiatives. This year, OceanShot’s co-founders invited PADI as a partner in its world-class restoration model.

“Coral reefs are among the most ecologically and economically valuable ecosystems that drive our blue economy,” says Dr. Richardson. “Scuba divers can not only explore beneath the surface and fuel ocean change as Torchbearers, taking part in a range of meaningful diver citizen-science actions driving real results. As global citizens, we have the opportunity to be  changemakers that inspire more innovative and positive solutions for the health of coral reefs, the ocean and our shared blue planet.”

“We’re doing this work because our oceans need us and we need them,” says Dr. Brosnan. “Humans have mapped the human genome, landed astronauts on the moon, and in less than twelve months developed a viable vaccine to combat a global pandemic. It is time to focus the same attention on our oceans with bold, ambitious, and achievable initiatives.”

PADI recently conducted a special underwater training session with Dr. Richardson, Dr. Brosnan and Mr. DeJoria in preparation for the upcoming underwater panel in December where they will share their knowledge and passion for ocean conservation with the world.

A swimming area in Florida has been temporarily closed following two incidents where individuals were bitten on the head by an alligator, as reported by a local news outlet.

A professional trapper, who spoke to WCJB, successfully captured a nine-foot alligator from the waters of the Alexander Springs Recreation Area located within the Ocala National Forest this past Sunday.

Both of the bite victims were scuba divers, with one being attacked on Wednesday and the other on Sunday. The area had previously experienced a temporary closure on Wednesday but was subsequently reopened. However, in response to the recent alligator-related incidents, it has now been closed again “until further notice,” according to WCJB.

The U.S. Forest Service announced the necessity for this temporary closure on Wednesday, emphasizing that it was a measure taken for public safety. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission promptly conducted an investigation and responded to the situation.

A scuba dive boat captain has been found guilty of criminal negligence in the deaths of 34 people who lost their lives in a tragic fire aboard the vessel in 2019, marking the deadliest maritime disaster in recent U.S. history. Jerry Boylan, the captain of the Conception, was charged with one count of misconduct or neglect of a ship officer, a statute intended to hold those responsible for maritime disasters, and he now faces the possibility of spending up to 10 years in prison.

The verdict, delivered by a federal jury, brings some closure to the grieving families who have eagerly awaited accountability for their loved ones’ deaths. Outside the courtroom, tears and embraces from relatives of the victims expressed their relief that justice had been served. This guilty verdict comes more than four years after the tragedy.

The Conception was anchored near Santa Cruz Island when the fire broke out. Thirty-three passengers and one crew member were trapped in a bunkroom below deck and did not survive. Boylan, along with four crew members, managed to escape by jumping overboard. The cause of the blaze still remains unknown, but the trial saw both the prosecution and defense exchange blame for the tragedy.

Prosecutors argued that Boylan failed to fulfill his responsibilities as captain and neglected crucial safety measures, such as not posting a roving night watch or adequately training his crew in firefighting. Boylan’s defense focused on placing blame on boat owner Glen Fritzler, accusing him of fostering a lax safety culture and failing to provide proper training.

While the exact cause of the fire may never be determined, the guilty verdict serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of maritime safety protocols and the accountability that accompanies the responsibility of being a ship officer. The legacy of the victims who lost their lives on that fateful day will endure in the reforms and changes brought forth by their tragic loss.

Boylan’s sentencing is scheduled for February 8, and he could face up to 10 years in prison. He was the only person criminally charged in relation to the fire. Following the tragedy, there have been notable changes to maritime regulations, efforts for congressional reform, and civil lawsuits seeking justice for the victims and their families. This incident will forever be etched in history as the deadliest maritime disaster in recent U.S. history.

A sad day for underwater filming projects as The Underwater Studio in Essex, known for its TV and movie filming stages, has recently closed its doors. Operating under the name SWS Marine Services, the company cited insurmountable challenges as the reason for its closure.

In an official statement replacing its website, the Underwater Studio explained that it struggled to recover from the business loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, soaring energy costs, a writers’ and actors’ strike in the United States, and a subsequent decline in bookings contributed to its financial woes. The studio now faces expenses that surpass its income, leading to this unfortunate decision.

The Underwater Studio, founded in Basildon’s Burnt Mills industrial estate in the late 1990s by diver Fred Woodcock and the late Geoff Smith, was a notable institution in the British film and TV industry. Both Woodcock and Smith had extensive experience in the industry, having worked on well-known franchises like James Bond and Jason Bourne. Woodcock remained involved as the diving supervisor, with Glenn Whatley serving as the studio administrator.

The strike by the seaway workers has ended and Great Lake freighter traffic is starting up again on Monday, October 30, 2023 at 7 a.m, according to Canadian news sources. Workers on strike perform maintenance, operational, and supervisory duties at 13 of the 15 locks along the trade route as well as raising and lowering boats between (locks) sections of varying depths along rivers.

The seaway, a major shipping route that connects the Atlantic Ocean and Great Lakes between Lake Erie and Montreal, has been closed since October 22, 2023 due to the walk-out of over 300 striking workers. While they await passage, ships have been left adrift. Due to the inability of businesses to accept goods that were being transported by freighters, the strike had a major effect.

Lana Payne, national president of UNIFOR, told reporters that striking workers wanted fairer compensation and solutions to “a toxic workplace.”

After more than 80 years on the seabed, what is probably the wreckage of the British submarine HMS Thistle has been discovered outside Rogaland, Norway

In a groundbreaking revelation, a new shipwreck has been unveiled in the depths of the ocean, shedding light on the secrets hidden beneath the seabed. This remarkable discovery came to fruition during a research expedition under the MAREANO program, which is dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of the underwater world’s biology and geology.

While the submarine wreckage was initially located in the spring, its true identity has now been definitively ascertained during a recent research cruise. This tantalizing revelation leaves us with more questions than answers – is this yet another unknown shipwreck?

When the research cruise was originally planned, the team of scientists noticed peculiar structures on their mapping screens. The MAREANO project is a collaborative endeavor involving the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), and the Norwegian Mapping Authority. Its primary mission is to comprehensively explore the ocean floor. When anomalous structures emerge on their maps, they become irresistible targets for investigation.

Fuelled by an insatiable curiosity, the researchers swiftly initiated a research site to uncover the truth about these enigmatic structures. Were they geological formations or hidden wrecks hitherto unknown to mankind?

“I rarely find myself in the video room during these explorations, but my curiosity was piqued long before our submersible cameras descended into the depths,” confessed senior engineer Kjell Bakkeplass.

As the voyage progressed, the suspicion that this was a hidden shipwreck grew stronger. Astonishingly, this recent cruise had already led to the discovery of four shipwrecks, with only one having been previously documented.

Bakkeplass expressed, “The striking resemblance between the wreck structures we had previously encountered and this newfound discovery is truly remarkable.”

The unveiling of this unidentified shipwreck adds a thrilling new chapter to the ongoing exploration of the ocean’s depths. As scientists continue to delve into the secrets of the seabed, who knows what other remarkable discoveries await?

A diver who had gone missing while exploring the Zenobia shipwreck was discovered lifeless by search and rescue teams within the ship’s confines on Friday. The incident unfolded in the waters off the coast of Larnaca, Cyprus, an area renowned for its popularity among divers.

The discovery was made around 11 a.m. on Friday when a search party located the missing diver in a compartment of the Zenobia ship, which is not frequently visited by divers. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of diving in the area.

The information was confirmed by Commander Andreas Charalambides, who leads the Larnaca search and rescue coordination center. He disclosed that the diver was not found in a restricted section of the ship. According to Charalambides, access to different parts of the wreck primarily depends on the diver’s skills and endurance, leaving room for speculation that the deceased diver might have ended up in that particular area accidentally.

The commander suggested that disorientation, panic, or poor visibility could have prevented the diver from exiting the compartment. He emphasized the unfortunate outcome of the incident, speculating that, based on camera footage provided by another member of the diving group, the diver might have lost track of time.

The deceased diver was reportedly an instructor who had been guiding a couple during the dive. The couple successfully ascended, but the missing diver encountered difficulties. Charalambides noted that the conditions inside the Zenobia wreck are challenging, including limited visibility and difficulties in finding the exit.

The search efforts began at 8 a.m. on Friday, the second day of the operation, following the diver’s descent into the water at 10 a.m. on the previous day. The alarm was raised when the scheduled dive time elapsed, and the missing diver failed to resurface.

Search teams, including divers from the police and the national guard, as well as volunteer groups, scoured the area around the Zenobia shipwreck. Helicopters and boats were deployed to search the sea surface within a wide radius.

Commander Charalambides, when asked about the incident and the fact that the diver was seemingly trapped in the wreck, suggested that restrictions on certain areas of the shipwreck should be considered in the future.

It is worth noting that at least six diver fatalities have been recorded at the Zenobia site since the ship sank in 1980 en route to Syria from Sweden. Recent diving incidents have ignited debates about safety, and a longstanding dispute exists between the wreck’s owner, AAK Larnaca Napa Sea Cruises, and the divers’ association.

The owner has previously claimed that a state of “anarchy and illegality” prevails at the site, while the divers’ association has countered, asserting that the site maintains one of the best safety records worldwide, with its members adhering to all regulations and licensing requirements.

Nicos Nicolaou, the head of the divers’ association, affirmed to the Cyprus Mail that the area witnesses over 30,000 divers annually, and this incident is the first of its kind this year. He emphasized the importance of regulations, arguing that without them, there would be numerous casualties daily.

The Zenobia shipwreck, which sank in 1980, is celebrated as one of the best diving sites in the Mediterranean and is often likened to the “Titanic of the Mediterranean.” It is regularly listed among the top ten wreck dive locations globally. Situated 1,500 meters off the Larnaca coast, the wreck lies at a depth of 42 meters and spans 172 meters across.

Notably, a similar incident occurred last year when another diver had to be hospitalized due to pulmonary edema following a rescue operation at the Zenobia shipwreck.

As the investigation unfolds, the diving community and authorities will be closely scrutinizing the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident, and discussions about the safety and regulations of the site are expected to continue.

A diver exploring the shipwreck “Zenobia” in the maritime area of Larnaca has been reported missing as of the morning of Thursday, October 26. The Larnaca Search and Rescue Coordination Center (KSERC) has initiated a search and rescue operation in response to this incident.

KSERC Larnaca received information about the missing diver around 10 a.m. The individual had descended to explore the “Zenobia” shipwreck located in the coastal waters of Larnaca Bay.

In response to the situation, the center activated the National Search and Rescue Plan “NEARCHOS.” This led to the deployment of rescue divers and teams from the Republic of Cyprus E-D System, alongside volunteer rescue teams.

The search operation is currently ongoing, with no results reported at this time.

About the Zenobia

The Zenobia shipwreck is one of the most renowned and well-preserved underwater archaeological sites in the world. Located off the coast of Larnaca in Cyprus, this sunken legend has captured the imagination of divers, historians, and adventure seekers since its discovery. Here’s a brief informational piece about this fascinating wreck.

The Zenobia: The Zenobia was a Swedish-built Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) ferry that set sail on her maiden voyage in May 1980. Tragically, she encountered technical difficulties just one mile from the Cypriot coast and was forced to anchor. Attempts to resolve the issues failed, and over the course of two days, the ship listed to one side, eventually sinking to a depth of approximately 42 meters (138 feet). Fortunately, all 105 crew members on board were safely evacuated, preventing any loss of life.

Archaeological Treasure: The Zenobia shipwreck is often described as a time capsule of the late 20th century, offering valuable insights into maritime technology and commerce during that era. The ship’s cargo included over a hundred vehicles, ranging from cars to trucks, as well as various goods such as meat, vegetables, and electronics.

Diving Adventure: The Zenobia is a mecca for divers from around the world. The crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean, coupled with the excellent visibility at this depth, make it an ideal site for exploring the wreck. Divers can navigate through the ship’s cavernous interiors, where trucks and cars are still recognizable, serving as eerie reminders of the ship’s former life.

The body of the renowned Chinese cave diver, Han Ting, was successfully recovered after being missing for 18 days during a dive in Du’an, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. Local authorities made the announcement on Wednesday.

Officials from the Du’an emergency management bureau reported that a smart underwater robot was deployed to retrieve the body, which was brought to the shore at 6:33 pm. Subsequent confirmation established the recovered body to be that of Han. The bureau extended condolences and stated that an ongoing investigation is in progress.

Media reports had previously detailed Han’s activities, noting that the 47-year-old diver was engaged in a training session on October 7 as he prepared for a world record challenge in deep cave diving. In May, Han had accomplished a remarkable dive of 277 meters in the same cave, setting an Asian record and coming within a mere 9 meters of the world record.

Following Han’s failure to resurface the next day, a search and rescue operation was initiated, enlisting professional teams from across China. On October 11, a remotely operated underwater vehicle discovered a body wedged between cave walls at a depth of approximately 110 meters, which was suspected to be Han. However, retrieving the body proved to be exceedingly challenging due to the complex underwater conditions.

Over his 17-year career as a diver, Han had been involved in numerous missions related to shipwreck archaeology for the country and participated in searches for the remains of Red Army soldiers. He also willingly contributed to many missions aimed at locating missing divers. Notably, the China Exploration and Research Society recognized him as China’s first all-around diving coach, proficient in scuba diving, free diving, and technical diving.

Federal prosecutors are pursuing justice for 34 individuals who tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire aboard the Conception, a scuba dive boat, back in 2019. The trial for Captain Jerry Boylan is set to commence this Tuesday, kicking off with the critical process of jury selection. Boylan has firmly maintained his innocence, contesting a single charge of misconduct or neglect of ship officer under a pre-Civil War statute, often referred to as “seaman’s manslaughter.” Despite public interest in the case, Boylan’s defense team has refrained from offering any public comments.

This heart-wrenching incident prompted significant reforms in maritime regulations, fueled congressional initiatives for change, and led to numerous civil lawsuits. Despite these extensive efforts, the precise cause of the pre-dawn fire that tragically engulfed the Conception off the Southern California coast in 2019 continues to elude investigators.

As of Saturday, October 21, 2023, midnight, UNIFOR employees who work for the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation are prepared to strike, which would effectively halt transit through the Seaway. More than 35 million metric tons of grain and other cargoes travel along the route every year during the Seaway’s season, which starts in late March and lasts until the start of winter.

Workers will begin forming picket lines at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023 if no agreement is reached by the end of today’s negotiations, which will last through October 19.

315,000 workers in all significant sectors of the economy are represented by UNIFOR, which is Canada’s largest private sector union. The union fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, promotes the rights of all working people, and works to bring about progressive change for a better future.

Observers are cautioning that if the strike continues and the seaway closes, the 2023 shipping season will be over and some vessels may become trapped.

Since the previous contract expired on March 31, the 315 unionized workers, who are UNIFOR members working in Canada, have been operating without a contract.

As of this posting, (October 24, 2023) last-ditch negotiations to reach a deal fell through and the massive inland waterway was forced to close. The Seaway workers, who are represented by Unifor, walked off the job early on Sunday morning.

Contemporary Artist Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee continues to make waves

The search for the most outstanding projects integrating commissioned art into interior, architectural or public spaces brought CODAawards: Collaboration of Design + Art around the globe.

The 11th annual international design competition found a winner in Houston.

Janavi Mahimatura Folmsbee was honored with the “People’s Choice” prize for her installation – the Aquarius Art Tunnel at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

She is bringing the award to Texas – a major win for the city of Houston.

Winners in other categories reside across the country Utah, New York, Ohio, Florida, California, as well as in Canada, Italy, Taiwan, Germany and the UK.

The CODAawards received a record-breaking 411 entries for this year’s competition – from 24 different countries, representing over $54 million in commissions. A distinguished panel of 18 jurors reviewed and scored the entries.

CODAworx winners were published in the September 2023 issue of CODAmagazine. The honorees were recognized on Oct. 6 at CODAsummit in San José, California. Mahimtura Folmsbee attended with Alton DuLaney, curator of public art and director of cultural arts programs at Houston Airports, who submitted her work for the award.

“Now the world’s best airport art program officially has the world’s best public arts project,” DuLaney said. “The immersive art experience by Indian-born, Houston-based artist Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee received more than 20 percent of the total votes cast. That’s the most votes of any artwork in the history of the award.”

The Aquarius Art tunnel has also received the National Mural Award in 2023 for Region 4  in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

The United Nations Decades of Ocean Science For Sustainable Development (UNDOS), created by UNESCO, also endorsed the Aquarius art tunnel as a global site for its scientific and educational importance towards ocean conservation through artistic outreach.

Mahimtura Folmsbee is the first female South Asian artist to be featured in the Houston Airports Public Art Program and collection.

The “Aquarius Art Tunnel” is 240 feet long, almost 9 feet high and 22 feet wide. Walking through it will transport travelers to under the sea, complete with colorful murals of aquatic life.

Mahimtura Folsmbee’s design was inspired by Flower Garden Banks Marine National Sanctuary on the Texas coast. She selected dozens of marine life from the reef – including coral, fish, algae, crinoids, sharks, Atlantic dolphins, turtles, eels, manta rays, octopi, mollusks and lobsters.

The detailed art for both walls of the tunnel has been created with the newest mural-making technology. Mahimtura Folmsbee worked with Emma Hickerson, G.P. Schmal and Jake Emmert of Moody Gardens to ensure the work is scientifically accurate, representing the deeper regions and mesophotic zones that are at 600 feet and below in the ocean in the Gulf of Mexico.

The tunnel is a space that showcases multiple artistic techniques, including fine art murals, floor designs, lenticulars, ceiling tiles, light and sound. A didactic panel will allow visitors to access the tunnel’s full features and augmented reality.

Original music, composed by Houston musician Andrew Karnavas, plays in the space, as well as recordings provided by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. The artist also contributed sounds from her personal diving excursions.

Mahimtura Folmsbee is focused on making the final product educational. The title of the installation pays homage to the constellation Aquarius, the water-bearer. The word “Aquarius” can be broken down into: “aqua,” representing water; and “ri,” inspired by the Hindi word “humari,” which translates to “ours,” and finally “us.”

“Taken together, the words signify that water has the power to unite us,” Mahimtura Folmsbee said. “Water is ours – for all of us.”

Marine conservation is at the center of Mahimtura Folmsbee’s oeuvre. This installation will serve as a continuation of years of effort to draw attention to the health of the world’s oceans.

Mahimtura Folmsbee’s drive to help the marine world has grown since she began diving 11 years ago. She has completed 253 dives.

Mahimtura Folmsbee works with marine scientists in the global community and sits on the Sanctuary Advisory Council for the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, as an advisory to the superintendent of the sanctuary through the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

“Marine life and algae need our help now more than ever,” Mahimtura Folmsbee said.

We have sad news to report as Canadian boating icon Victor Duhamel, the pioneer of Legend Boats, has passed away at age 82.

The well-respected brand has been a figurehead of Canadian boating for over 50 years and has played a pivotal role in Canada’s boating landscape and retail economy. The Whitefish, Ontario company was the first Canadian boat manufacturer to offer complete packages including a boat, motor, and trailer — which offered a simpler and more enjoyable buying experience to go with the company’s well-built products. Legend has been a longstanding benchmark for the Ontario economy, and the Canadian boating market at large, while earning a reputation for quality products and excellent customer service.

The company currently designs and manufactures over 30 models of aluminum fish/ski/cruise boats, four deck boat models, and over 40 models of pontoon boats that are distributed through over 60 Legend dealers across Canada.

We send our condolences to the entire Duhamel family and everyone at Legend. Please see the press release below:

LIVELY, ONTARIO – It is with deep sadness and profound respect that we announce the passing of Victor Duhamel, the dynamic and pioneering co-founder of Legend Boats.

Born on February 15th, 1941 in Lively, Ontario, Victor’s early years at St. Charles Catholic High School laid the foundation for his innovative spirit and business acumen. From humble beginnings selling tires at Duhamel & Dewar alongside friend and business partner Carl Dewar, to being inducted into the Canadian Boating Industry Hall of Fame, Victor’s journey was nothing short of remarkable.

A visionary who saw beyond the waves, Victor transformed the Canadian boating landscape. As co-founders of Legend Boats, he and Carl sensed a niche for boats designed by Canadians for Canadian waters. With trailblazing moves like the introduction of the country’s first fully-priced boat catalogue in 1988, Victor always navigated uncharted waters with confidence. Other industry-firsts, from the revolutionary rear bench that converts into an extended casting deck, to the introduction of sleek molded consoles in aluminum boats, stand testament to his unparalleled creativity.

A Titan of Industry

“I will always remember Vic as a visionary in the marine industry,” says Jamie Dewar, co-CEO and son of Carl Dewar. “His innovative approach to business set new horizons, but it was his deep love for people that truly made waves in our hearts and the industry.”

Beyond his business milestones, Victor’s personal attributes echoed the greatness of his professional achievements. Known for his warmth and friendliness, Victor’s interactions were characterized by a genuine smile and an authentic interest in those he met.

A Family Man

“My father Victor was an incredible family man who worked hard to help create memories for our customers, our work family and our partners in business,” said Marc Duhamel, President and co-CEO. “My father shared a love and passion for everything outdoors. He believed strongly in family and always made time for what is truly important in life, the time we spend with family and friends.”

“He was an incredible husband to my mother, Ruthann, who he fell in love with at first sight and was married to for nearly 60 years. He was an incredible father, grandfather and great grandfather, who always supported each of us to be our best. He was a valued mentor who always took the time to teach and share his experience. An incredible story teller, my father lived life to the fullest and has shared more stories than I can ever recount. He shared these over and over and we will miss them.”

“He will be fondly remembered by everyone he met. My dad would meet people and form the deepest relationships with them. He loved everyone and always wanted to hear their story. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten. His legacy will endure.”

The King of the Road

Dubbed the “King of the Road” by the Sudbury Star, Victor’s love for North American landscapes was evident. His passion for RV travels showcased his insatiable wanderlust and zest for adventure.

“When I think back of the times with Dad, we spent a lot of time together traveling,” said Jeff Duhamel, Business Development Manager. “My father’s adventurous spirit was passed on to us at a very young age. He was an RV enthusiast. With my mom Ruthann, myself, my brothers Todd and Marc, and my sister Nicole, my Dad has taken us in an RV all over Canada and the USA.”

“The things we have seen and done may be more than most get to experience in a lifetime. His generosity and curiosity took us not just to places but to meeting all types of people from literally all over the world. He would talk to anyone, about anything and always found each person he encountered fascinating in their own way.”

“My father was a natural born salesperson. To him it was not about the sale but rather the relationships he made and built that mattered to him the most. I sit and think about how many families he helped create memories with over his many years in the marine and RV world.”

“Dad, your strength, dedication and love have built a strong family foundation. Thank you for guiding us along our way to make our lives full of success, loving families and memories made together.”

A Legacy That Transcends Generations

His legacy is not just etched in the innovations he brought to the industry but also in the vibrant family business that continues to thrive. With his sons Marc and Jeff Duhamel at the helm of various facets of the business, and his grandchildren gearing up to carry forward his indomitable spirit, Victor’s legacy is poised to sail into the future.

Victor’s passing is an immeasurable loss to the Legend Boats family, the boating community, and Canada. He leaves behind a sea of memories, innovations, and a legacy that will continue to influence and inspire for generations. Details regarding memorial services and remembrances will be communicated in due course.

I have taken on the 8K swim challenge this October to support Great Ormond Street Hospital. The challenge invites people to get sponsored to swim their way through the month with purpose and to raise valuable funds to support an incredible hospital who achieves incredible things.

Swim 8K

The passion to support this cause came after various friends had accessed the hospital with their sick children. It is hard not to want to show support for a place that has shown such compassion and love to people you care about. It is even harder to not pursue endeavors that raise funds for them to continue the innovative work that they do.

This hospital opened the first Leukaemia research unit in the 1960’s. It has had constant breakthroughs in gene therapy and was pivotal in taking part in the management of Covid. It is a magical place and well established for its history and high quality paediatric care, neurosurgery and transplant centre amongst a list of other things.

Swim 8K

The challenge is all about swimming, nothing too strenuous and all at your own pace throughout the month. The money raised supports patient families with expenses, funding meals for breastfeeding Mothers and funds accomodation for parents to stay overnight and to be near their unwell children as well as various other support programmes.

I chose to take on the challenge because I swim all the time anyway and decided that it was right to start swimming with more purpose. It feels good to be helping other people by doing something I love and it motivates me to do more, to be more active and engaged in causes that need help.

Swim 8K

Every penny is vital and none of us know when a hospital like this, its specialists, its nurses and its guidance might be all we have to save someone we love.

Swim with purpose. Swim 8K in October.

The current issue of DIVER which has stopped publishing after 48 years, will be the last. In the upcoming weeks and months, we will also be closing the website and digital edition.

Since Phil Nuytten, the publisher and owner of DIVER, passed away earlier this year, some decisions had to be made about the publication’s future, so we decided to end with a tribute issue to him. Making this choice was neither fast nor simple.

A remarkable 48 years have passed since DIVER first appeared. That requires tremendous endurance in the publishing industry. Few magazines have lasted as long as this one, which can be attributed to its contributors, advertisers, and readers.

We simply wouldn’t have had the run we did without you. both divers and non-divers. Readers contemplating their upcoming purchase in a dive shop, on a dive boat, on their morning commute, or while lounging on a couch; you made the past 48 years possible if you’ve ever held the exquisitely glossy pages and gazed wondrously into the vibrant illustrations that adorn it.

It has been a pleasure to create a magazine that is so well-liked and respected for you all to read. Our goals were to instruct, amuse, and inspire. Our authors put a lot of effort into making their experiences come to life in a way that others can benefit from. Our readers invested their hard-earned cash to invest in those stories, adventures, and opinions because our advertisers offered us the carrot of exotic locations to strive for.

If I have become a diving photojournalist, you were the giants whose shoulders I stood upon. This marks the end of an era. I’m filled with gratitude that I was small part of it.

Jett Britnell

Jett Britnell published 94 articles, contributed to 33 magazine covers, and wrote some ads and advertorials for DIVER.

Thanks to all our readers, contributors and advertisers for an incredible 48 years of adventure. Happy diving from the DIVER team.

Diving World Loses A Giant – Bret Gilliam Passes Away at Age 72 https://www.thescubanews.com/2023/10/09/diving-world-loses-a-giant-bret-gilliam-passes-away-at-age-72/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=diving-world-loses-a-giant-bret-gilliam-passes-away-at-age-72 https://www.thescubanews.com/2023/10/09/diving-world-loses-a-giant-bret-gilliam-passes-away-at-age-72/#comments Mon, 09 Oct 2023 04:00:13 +0000 https://www.thescubanews.com/?p=32281 Bret Clifton Gilliam, a pioneering figure in the world of technical diving and a prolific writer, has passed away. Bret Clifton Gilliam, a pioneering figure in the world of technical diving and a prolific writer, has passed away. He was born on February 3, 1951, and his remarkable life was filled with groundbreaking achievements and contributions to the diving community.

Bret Gilliam is best known as the co-founder of Technical Diving International (TDI), alongside Mitch Skaggs, a certification agency that revolutionized diving practices. He also held the world record for deep diving on air at one point in his career. His passion for the underwater world extended to his writing, where he authored or co-authored 72 books and penned over 1500 feature magazine articles. His work graced the covers of over 100 magazines, making him one of the most popular writers in the diving industry.

Throughout his diving journey, spanning from 1959, Bret logged an impressive 19,000 dives. His remarkable accomplishments extended beyond the ocean’s depths. He became a multimillionaire through the successful sale of several businesses, including Technical Diving International, V. I. Divers Ltd., AMF Yacht Charters, Ocean Quest Cruise Lines, G2 Publishing (Fathoms Magazine), Sea Ventures Ltd., and Uwatec. Some of these enterprises grew into multinational conglomerates, with an aggregate value exceeding $80 million at the time of sale.

Bret Gilliam’s expertise was sought after in legal matters related to diving and maritime affairs. Since 1971, he operated Ocean Tech, providing expert witness testimony in over 400 legal cases, ranging from defense to plaintiff litigation. His contributions to the field were substantial, and in a notable case, he played a pivotal role as a maritime and diving expert witness, resulting in a $12 million settlement in May 2015.

Gilliam’s influence extended to criminal trials and military court martial proceedings for the U.S. Marine Corps. He served as a Special Consultant to various U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Bret Gilliam was born at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, to Commander Gill Gilliam and Jeanne Gilliam. He was the eldest of three children. Tragically, his younger brother Chris was murdered in 1972 at the age of 16 while attending an outdoor concert in Puerto Rico.

His diving journey began in 1959 when he started training with Lt. Chuck Brestle at the Naval Air Station Key West. He attended several high schools, including Virginia Beach High School and Brunswick High School, graduating in 1969. In high school, he excelled as an athlete, participating in football, ice hockey, baseball, swimming, and track. He also represented Hobie and Hansen surfboards as a surfing competitor from 1965 to 1970.

Gilliam pursued higher education at the University of Maine and Bowdoin College, focusing on history and political science. Despite winning a National ROTC Scholarship in 1968, he was drawn to the Navy’s deep diving project, where he documented nuclear fast attack submarines. This decision led him away from his undergraduate studies and into the world of business when he founded Ocean Tech.

During his career, Gilliam held various diving jobs and even pursued a semi-professional surfing career. In 1971, he worked as a diving Supervisor for Vocaline Air Sea Technology (VAST Inc.) in the Caribbean, where his interest in underwater photography was sparked. Tragically, in 1972, he faced a harrowing experience when his dive buddy Rod Temple was attacked by oceanic whitetip sharks and lost his life. Gilliam’s heroic attempt to save Temple was commended by the Virgin Islands’ Governor, despite the near-death experience he endured.

In 1973, Gilliam established V.I. Divers Ltd., a dive resort catering to both recreational and scientific divers. The company also provided location services for various film and television productions. In 1977, he founded AMF Yacht Charters Ltd., specializing in luxury motor yacht charters. These companies were sold in 1985, and Gilliam ventured into the cruise ship industry as the Vice President & CEO of Ocean Quest International.

Gilliam’s achievements reached great depths, quite literally, when he performed a deep air dive to 452 feet in Roatán in 1990, breaking his own record in 1993 by reaching 475 feet.

His contributions to the diving industry extended to his involvement with the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD) and the subsequent formation of Technical Diving International (TDI). TDI became the largest technical training agency globally, with offices in 26 countries.

International Training Inc. served as the parent company for TDI, Scuba Diving International (SDI), and Emergency Response Diving International (ERDI). Gilliam’s leadership was instrumental in the early success of TDI until the company was sold in 2004.

Gilliam also led UWATEC USA and played a crucial role in its sale to Johnson Outdoors. His expertise extended to the medical field for divers when he served as the president and CEO of DiveSafe Insurance Inc.

In addition to his business endeavors, Bret Gilliam served as a publisher, editor, and contributor to several diving magazines, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.

Bret Gilliam’s legacy in the world of diving, business, and writing is immeasurable. His pioneering spirit, relentless pursuit of excellence, and unwavering dedication to the underwater world have left an enduring impact on the diving community. He will be remembered as a true visionary and a beloved figure in the world of diving and exploration. Bret Gilliam’s contributions will continue to inspire generations of divers and adventurers to come.

Tragedy struck the world of cave exploration as acclaimed cave diver, technical diver, and explorer Brett Hemphill lost his life while exploring the challenging Phantom Springs cave system in Texas. Hemphill, who was also the president of the non-profit organization Karst Underwater Research, dedicated his life to the exploration, study, and preservation of underwater karst environments.

The incident, which claimed the life of the experienced diver, occurred in the depths of Phantom Springs, known as the deepest natural cave in the United States. The exact details surrounding the tragic event remain scarce, but the cave has earned its reputation as an exceptionally demanding and treacherous system, requiring divers of the highest skill and experience.

Brett Hemphill was a well-respected figure in the world of cave and technical diving, leaving an indelible mark on the community. Throughout his career, he made pioneering contributions to sidemount configurations and played a pivotal role in the exploration, mapping, and research of underwater caves for several decades.

Award-winning underwater photographer and videographer Becky Kagan Schott, who had collaborated with Hemphill on numerous documentaries, expressed her disbelief and shock at his untimely passing in a heartfelt statement on Facebook. She reminisced about their two-decade-long friendship and their shared adventures.

“Brett B Hemphill, you’ve helped me since I was 18, you believed in me, you took me to places I never could have imagined in my dreams,” Schott wrote. “Your jokes and positive attitude were infectious. Your thirst for knowledge and pushing caves further was admirable. I loved hearing the excitement in your voice when you talked about caves. Your enthusiasm never failed, and it always felt new and exciting. You were a true explorer and a true friend.”

Schott’s tribute to Hemphill highlighted the lasting impact of their collaboration, which included filming documentaries in various underwater cave systems, such as Florida, the Bahamas, Yucatan, and Phantom Springs. Together, they received accolades, including Emmy awards, for their work in educating the public about safety in cave exploration and the allure of these mysterious underground worlds.

The news of Brett Hemphill’s passing has left a void in the tight-knit community of cave and technical divers, and he will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to the exploration and preservation of these unique and challenging environments.

In the azure depths off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, a pioneering initiative is making waves in the world of marine tourism. The innovative concept is the creation of an Underwater Military Museum. This endeavour not only promises to attract more tourists to alternative destinations but also to relieve the pressures on the fragile natural coral reefs that have long been the region’s main diving attraction. Diving and snorkeling enthusiasts are in for a treat, with the opportunity to explore a captivating collection of 15 pieces of military equipment strategically placed in three distinct underwater locations, providing them with an unforgettable subaquatic experience while championing sustainable tourism practices.

Hurghada New Dive Sites

The need for such a solution became evident due to the rapid development and the subsequent surge in tourist numbers experienced in the Red Sea Governorate, particularly in the bustling city of Hurghada. This development led to an unprecedented increase in diving activities on the area’s natural coral reefs. Some sites saw over 200,000 dives per year, significantly exceeding the recommended safe diving limit of 22,000 dives per site annually. This relentless exploitation threatened the very ecosystems that drew visitors in the first place.

Recognising that the responsibility for preserving the environment is a shared one, the community and its organizations united to seek solutions and promote the sustainable use of the Red Sea’s unique and delicate living resources. In response, the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) took a proactive role in addressing the excessive use of natural coral reefs.

In close collaboration with the Red Sea Reserves Sector, environmental monitoring efforts revealed the deterioration of several sites off the coast of Hurghada due to excessive diving and snorkeling activities. It was clear that action was needed to reduce the strain on these resources, shifting from passive observation to proactive measures.

Thus, HEPCA conceived a plan: the creation of artificial coral reefs by strategically placing retired military equipment in front of Hurghada. The idea garnered widespread support from the Red Sea Governorate and the Ministry of Environment. The multifaceted goals of this initiative include:

  1. Relieving Pressure on Natural Reefs: By establishing new diving sites, the project aims to alleviate the stress on natural coral reefs caused by excessive diving activities.
  2. Promoting Historical Diving: The sunken antiquities are set to captivate diving enthusiasts from around the world, introducing them to the exciting world of diving on submerged historical artifacts.
  3. Boosting Marine Life: Over time, the sunken equipment will evolve into natural coral reefs, bolstering the local fish populations and enhancing the region’s biodiversity.
  4. Sustainable Tourism: The addition of artificial coral reefs enables the implementation of a diving site management plan based on their capacity, shifting the diving industry towards a sustainable and economically vital activity for Egypt.
  5. Collaborative Preservation: This project exemplifies collaborative efforts between civil society organizations such as the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA), the Red Sea Reserves (Ministry of Environment), and the Red Sea Governorate. Together, they work as custodians of Egypt’s natural wealth, committed to its sustainable preservation for future generations.
  6. A Model for the Future: Success in this project could serve as a blueprint for other regions facing similar challenges. Plans are already underway to add four more sites in the Hurghada region, signaling a comprehensive shift from the overuse of natural coral reefs to sustainable practices.
  7. Global Coral Conservation: Egypt’s coral reefs, classified as one of the world’s last coral refuges, face threats from climate change. International organizations recognize their significance as a beacon of hope for coral preservation. Projects like this contribute not only to Egypt’s cultural heritage but also to its reputation as a steward of global coral conservation.

This underwater wonderland promises to not only captivate divers but also safeguard Egypt’s precious coral reefs for generations to come, all while underscoring the vital importance of sustainable tourism practices in today’s world.

Dive Pirates Foundation is proud to announce it has been nominated for DEMA’s 2023 Diving Community Champions award. The Foundation is asking all DEMA members to support the crew and vote to recognize the great efforts achieved in 2023!

Specifically, DPF is being recognized for this year’s “Find Your Inner Treasure” effort, which brought the world of scuba diving to 6 adults living with disabilities. Through this effort, the recipients – 5 of whom are military veterans – were equipped fully and trained by their local dive shops before enjoying a week-long dive trip to Cayman Brac Beach Resort. While at the resort, DPF provided additional volunteer instructors and adaptive buddies for all participants to dive adaptively alongside industry professionals and returning adaptive divers alike. For many of the new divers, these dives were their first open water diving experiences. By the end of the week, all new divers had completed more than a dozen open water dives, with some also earning their open water diver certification.

Dive Pirates

However, Dive Pirates’ “Find Your Inner Treasure” effort also provides something much more than a scuba diving trip: freedom. The new divers frequently used this word to describe the feeling of scuba diving, with many expressing that they thought diving was unattainable for them with their disability. For them, this trip was much more than a vacation. It was a confidence boost and validation of their ability.

New participants also found themselves welcomed into the Dive Pirates family and the dive community at large. Throughout the trip, DPF provided its participants new and old with fun events at the resort in order to build camaraderie and to promote a welcoming, inclusive environment for the 6 new divers. With the new members eager to return for future dives, as well as 8 past recipients, one stowaway adaptive diver, and other divers making this their vacation volunteer effort resulting in 64 travelers,  2023 marked another successful year for the Dive Pirates Foundation..

Now, DPF needs you to vote so they can be recognized for their amazing work! Voting closes October 12, 2023, at 4:00 pm US Pacific Time. DEMA members can vote for DPF here.

Dive Pirates

The Dive Pirates Foundation a 501(c)3 organization, positively impacts the lives of its recipients; injured military, first responders, law enforcement and others with mobile disabilities, by welcoming them into adaptive scuba diving which fosters accomplishment, self-worth and community. The Foundation trains, equips and conducts dive trips year-round to calm, warm-water locations for the safety of those with spinal cord injuries, networking with facilities willing to empower all participants with compassion and adaptation for a positive experience diving, team building and networking.

Why This Petition MattersStarted by Hvalavinir: Stop whaling in Iceland.

We demand that Iceland’s government bans whaling once and for all.

Whales have taken as long as two hours to die during Icelandic hunts, according to a report by the Icelandic food and veterinary authority.

Last year, animal welfare officers were on board the hunting vessel from whaling company Hvalur ehf. and documented and filmed 58 of the 148 fin whales that were killed that season.

36 whales (24%) were shot more than once with explosive harpoons. Of these, five whales were shot three times and four whales were shot four times.

To put this in perspective it takes about 8 minutes to reload the harpoon that then needs to hit a fast moving animal in the ocean more than once if it fails to kill.

One whale with a spear in its back was chased for 5 hours without success.

The median time from the first shot to the death of the whales that did not die immediately was 11.5 minutes, and the agonising slow deaths lasted up to two hours.

Three whales were shot but could not be caught and have fought long excruciating deaths.

Horrific treatment of animals in this way is unacceptable.

We demand a revocation of the whaling license and that these brutal killings be stopped and banned once and for all.

Two offshore commercial divers and the director of a diving company have been sanctioned for exaggerating credentials.

Investigators from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have slammed the trio for false claims of diving experience that could have jeopardised their own and other divers’ lives in an offshore incident.

Following a HSE investigation, two divers from the Portsmouth area have had their diving qualifications withdrawn. The two men and the director of a commercial diving company have also received police cautions for fraud.

In December 2022 HSE received information that two divers may have obtained their closed bell qualifications without having the necessary prior diving experience.

There was concern that their lack of experience could result in a diving incident offshore as both divers had worked for contractors in the North Sea.

In order to work in the UK as a saturation diver (also known as a closed bell diver), a diver needs an approved qualification. There are only two dive schools in the world that currently offer the qualification – INPP in Marseille, France, and the Commercial Dive Academy in Tasmania.

HSE contacted both dive schools and obtained details of the dives submitted to the schools by the divers as part of their enrolment.

Inspectors then followed this information up with several UK diving contractors to check on whether the claimed diving experience was genuine.  Due to the legal requirement for diving contractors to retain records of dives for two years, the contractors were able to provide accurate details of dive depths and times for the individuals concerned.

The director of the diving company in question was unable to provide records, despite having signed and stamped the diver’s logbook himself.  HSE went to the location of the claimed diving, and with the assistance of the harbourmaster was able to demonstrate that no diving had occurred on the dates recorded in the diver’s logbook. The diver had forged 10 at this location in order to demonstrate he had 20 dives over 15m deep. These had been fraudulently stamped and signed by the director.

The other diver was very short of experience and HSE could only find records that he had carried out around 28 dives, only one of which was deeper than 15m. He declared to the dive school he had 106 dives, 26 of which were deeper than 15m.

HSE worked closely with the Fraud Investigation Team of Hampshire Police. All three individuals admitted that they had made false entries into logbooks and received police cautions for fraud by false representation under the Fraud Act 2006.

HSE diving inspector Phil Crombie said: “You need diving experience to become a qualified closed bell diver and making it up could put your life and other divers at risk.

“Offshore diving contractors need to use qualified divers and these men could have worked anywhere across Great Britain.

“If we hear divers have made up their experience in order to get onto a closed bell course, we will look very carefully at all of the records available.

“A logbook is a document required by law, and making false entries is a criminal offence. The police cautions issued meant that we were able to have the qualifications withdrawn quickly by the relevant authorities.

“Closed bell courses cost over fifteen thousand pounds for a diver – and these divers have ended up losing that without gaining a qualification.  It’s just fortunate that they weren’t involved in any accident or incident.”

Hampshire Police PC Alam Mahmmued said: “The men involved in this case did not have the requisite experience to undertake dive work of this nature, posing a serious risk of harm to themselves. This is in addition to their actions which clearly amounted to criminal offences.

“We take any aspect of fraud seriously and we were pleased to collaborate with HSE to achieve a suitable outcome in this case. We hope this will in turn reduce the likelihood of any further offending. If offending continues, then these individuals face severe consequences in the criminal courts.”

St Davids RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager John Williams says:

‘It was such a pleasure to welcome The Prince and Princess of Wales to our lifeboat station. They were genuinely interested in the work of the RNLI and spent time talking to volunteers about their different roles.

‘The Royal couple were invited onboard the Tamar class lifeboat to see our stunning coastline from a different perspective. It was great to show Their Royal Highnesses how we recover our lifeboat on the slipway and day-to-day operations. Our volunteers are very proud of what they do. Meeting The Prince and Princess was a real honour and something none of them will forget.’

It was also a day to remember for Isla Kohler, four and her two-year-old brother Albert, children of St Davids Deputy Coxswain Judd Kohler and crew member Ellen Evans, who signalled the end of the visit by presenting a posy to The Princess of Wales.

On the morning of September 3, a diver was discovered unresponsive at La Jolla Cove, and subsequent resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, as confirmed by witnesses. This incident marks the latest in a series of similar occurrences within the past four months at the popular diving location.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on September 3, lifeguards received notification that fellow divers had found an individual in the water at La Jolla Cove who was not breathing. San Diego city spokeswoman Monica Muñoz confirmed the recovery of the diver from the water and reported that the San Diego Police Department was alerted to the situation. However, no further details were provided regarding the incident.

Andrea Zuccari, an Italian-Swiss freediver, vanished while scuba diving at a well-known resort in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. Andrea was 48 years old. For the purpose of maintaining the connection cables on a dive platform, Zuccari was engaged in a routine dive. Though some of his gear has been located, Andrea has not.

About Andrea Zuccari

In recent years, Andrea Zuccari has devoted his entire life to freediving.

Zuccari broke a record for freediving in 2014 by descending 175 meters (574 feet) without a mask. In just 3 minutes and 13 seconds, he accomplished this feat, breaking the previous record for Italy and rising to the position of second-deepest male freediver in the world.

His athletic accomplishments and interactions with numerous athletes from around the globe have given him the opportunity to accumulate a significant amount of baggage and valuable experience in the field of deep freediving.

Athletes from all over the world travel to its facility, the Freediving World Apnea Centre, to benefit from the special deep freediving resources and receive training advice.

However, in addition to this physical oddity, Andrea’s study of a dry and sea training protocol to develop the ability to equalize in depth led him to become one of the world’s foremost experts on this subject, which is so challenging for most people, freediving equalization. Andrea was undoubtedly born with an anatomical conformation of the organs involved in the equalization that facilitates him in his amazing performances.

At specific times of the year, Andrea Zuccari was employed in Sharm el Sheik where he instructs freedivers of all skill levels, from novices to elite athletes, in the sport of freediving. But during some months of the year, he travels to locations where his workshops are needed.

Andrea Zuccari was a highly skilled freediver and scuba diver who was well-versed in the area’s waters; his disappearance has shocked the diving community.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Coast Guard, police, and emergency management agencies concluded the search for two missing scuba divers who were rescued by a fisherman Wednesday night in Caribbean Sea waters off ‘Caja de Muertos’ (Coffin Island), Puerto Rico.

Rescued are José Oquendo,25, and Emanuel Rodríguez, 29, after a local fisherman, reportedly a friend of the survivors, found and rescued them from the water just off the CariCOOS weather buoy a mile and a half south of ‘Caja de Muertos.’

“We are very happy for the survivors and their families on the successful outcome of this search and rescue case,” said Capt. José E. Díaz, Sector San Juan commander. “I express my heartfelt appreciation to all the Coast Guard units, local agencies and Good Samaritans for their professionalism and dedication displayed throughout the search efforts.  We also remind mariners of having the right emergency signaling equipment when conducting activities in the water and heeding weather advisories especially when the area was being affected by a passing tropical storm system.”

The two survivors were dive fishing off a boat with two others, who were aboard the vessel when they reported losing sight of both divers Wednesday morning.

Coast Guard watchstanders at the Sector San Juan Joint Rescue Sub-Center received initial notification of the incident from a 911 Emergency Service operator at 8:50 a.m.  At approximately, 1:50 p.m. the stepfather of one of the divers reported relocating the dive buoy that was being used by the survivors.

Coast Guard watchstanders received a communication at 7:11 p.m. from Puerto Rico Emergency Management Bureau personnel reporting the divers had been rescued.  The fisherman transported the survivors to the ‘La Playa’ Sector in Ponce, where they were received by family, rescue authorities and Emergency Medical Service personnel on scene.

Coast Guard rescue units involved in the search conducted four air searches and one surface search through the search area, covering approximately 104 square nautical miles.

The Shark Trust and Blue Planet aquarium teams have been busy installing the Oceanic 31 shark art exhibition which will open to the public on Saturday 26th August and will run until Sunday 1st October 2023.

The Shark Trust has brought together a group of artists who are passionate about sharks, conservation, and using art as a tool for positive change. Each of the 31 paintings, drawings, sculptures and digital media represents a species of shark or ray that lives in the open ocean.

Oceanic 31 Exhibition - The Shark Trust

Why 31?

2021 saw a review of the status of 31 oceanic shark and ray species. Of the 31 species reviewed, 24 are threatened with extinction according to the IUCN Red List. Some of these species are famous – like the Great White or Whale Shark. But others, like the Pygmy Longhorned Devil Ray – aren’t quite so well known. Featuring all 31 in this exhibition is a great way to showcase just how varied and amazing oceanic sharks and rays are.

Why Oceanic?

Oceanic means relating to the high seas or open ocean. The species featured within Oceanic 31 all spend a large amount of time during their life here. These are the international waters beyond country borders, outside of normal jurisdiction and, crucially, at heightened risk from overexploitation due to a lack of agreed management and/or enforcement of regulation.

Oceanic 31 Exhibition - The Shark Trust

What can you do?

The Big Shark Pledge is at the heart of an ambitious campaign. By signing the petition, you can be part one of the biggest campaigning communities in the history of shark conservation. To put pressure on governments and fisheries. And make the positive changes required to safeguard these awesome sharks and rays.

Paul Cox, Shark Trust CEO, Said “This exhibition gives us the opportunity to reach out to a new audience. And inspire more people with the wonderful sharks and rays on which our Big Shark Pledge campaign is based. “

Oceanic 31 Exhibition - The Shark Trust

Unable to attend in person? The Shark Trust has created a 360° virtual exhibition. No matter where you are in the world, you can experience this awe-inspiring artwork.

Limited edition prints of some of the artwork are available to buy. If you want the chance to bid for an original artwork you can register your interest to attend the final auction. All profits will go towards the Shark Trust Big Shark Pledge campaign, working to protect the magnificent sharks and rays that swim in the high seas.

A bill is currently before the province of Ontario legislature that will require children 12 and younger to wear a life jacket while onboard on a boat.

When taking their kids on vacation near water, especially when boating, the majority of parents put “safety first” into practice by making sure that their kids are wearing life jackets. Many people, including The Scuba News Canada, were under the mistaken impression that this was a law that applied specifically to children. (in Ontario/Canada) Currently, every person on board a watercraft while boating, must have a life jacket available (even if it isn’t being worn), per Canadian law.

Read The Scuba News Canada’s Article on: Myths and Facts about Secondary and Dry Drowning

The legislation, which is known as “Joshua’s Law” in honour of 11-year-old Joshua Steinberg who perished in a boating accident on the St. Lawrence River in 2018, was introduced by Progressive Conservative MPP Goldie Ghamari in April of 2023. This new law has received support from all parties and is anticipated to be adopted into law during the upcoming fall session of the Ontario legislature.

According to OPP data, 114 paddlers or boaters died in maritime mishaps between 2018 and 2022 while not wearing PFDs.

“Safety First”!

In the early morning hours of New Year’s Eve 1862, the Civil War Ironclad, USS Monitor, sank beneath the ocean waves during a terrible storm off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. That morning, 16 men went down with the ship, and although numerous people searched for it for over a century, the Monitor’s final resting location remained a mystery until 1973.

Join John Broadwater, president and founder of Spritsail Enterprises and former superintendent at Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, to learn about the search for the USS Monitor. Discover why the shipwreck was difficult to locate and learn about the expeditions to find it. Go back in time to August of 1973, when John G. Newton led a team of scientists in search of the elusive shipwreck. Learn why it continued to be difficult to identify once they thought they found it and what finally convinced the team it was indeed the USS Monitor.

This webinar is one of the first in our 50th anniversary celebrations of USS Monitor. Stay tuned for more, as we commemorate the confirmation of the location of Monitorin 1974 and the shipwreck becoming our nation’s first national marine sanctuary in 1975.
