In a thrilling development for diving enthusiasts, Aggressor Adventures is set to launch the luxurious Philippines Aggressor II™. This elegant 26-passenger liveaboard dive yacht is all set to offer seven, ten, and eleven-night all-inclusive excursions that promise to explore the mesmerizing reefs and atolls of the Visayan and Sulu Seas in 2024.

On April 6, 2024, the Philippines Aggressor II™ will embark on her inaugural “Tubbataha Reef” itinerary charters, setting sail from Puerto Princesa, Philippines. These exclusive seven and ten-night excursions will take divers to the Tubbataha Reefs National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and will continue through June 2024. As June arrives, the yacht will then journey to the Visayan Sea, offering guests a unique transition charter that allows them to explore both Tubbataha and the Visayas region.

From June through February, the Philippines Aggressor II™, along with her sister ship, the Philippines Aggressor®, will be exploring dive sites near Cebu, Malapascua, Apo, and Bohol Islands during the “Best of Visayas” and “Visayas South” itineraries. Visayas charters will typically depart from Mactan, with special occasions occasionally seeing departures from Dumaguete.

Aggressor Adventures Chairman and CEO Wayne Brown expressed his excitement about this extraordinary addition, stating, “With such high demand for this extraordinary destination, we are pleased to launch a second yacht in the Philippines. The diversity of the marine life in the Philippines is simply unparalleled. Manta rays, thresher sharks, whale sharks, and other pelagics make your adrenaline levels surge, while the profound macro creatures provide awesome photo subjects. The Visayan and Sulu Seas are home to pygmy seahorses, frogfish, ornate ghost pipefish, and countless other-worldly, tiny, marine creatures.”

Crafted by Almaroon Yacht Builders, the new Philippines Aggressor II™ yacht is a remarkable vessel, measuring 140 feet (43 meters) in length and 26 feet (8 meters) in width, with four spacious decks. Among its top features are five upper-level staterooms with balconies that offer panoramic views of South Pacific sunsets. The yacht also boasts eight deluxe lower-level staterooms featuring twin berths and ample personal storage. All staterooms come equipped with a media player, climate control, and ensuite full bathrooms. Additional amenities include a hot tub and wet bar on the fly bridge, an indoor lounge, a restaurant serving chef-prepared meals, and state-of-the-art scuba facilities that include Nitrox tank fills and two dive tenders.

For those eager to embark on these unforgettable adventures, reservations for Aggressor Adventures can be made through local dive retail centers, travel agents, or online at aggressor.com. You can also contact them by phone at 800-348-2628 or 1-706-993-2531.

Dive enthusiasts and adventurers, mark your calendars for an extraordinary journey through the Philippines’ most spectacular marine wonders aboard the Philippines Aggressor II™. This new liveaboard dive yacht promises an unparalleled diving experience in one of the world’s most biodiverse and breathtaking underwater playgrounds.

The Green Fins Award is awarded to the marine tourism operation best achieving the only internationally recognised environmental standard for marine tourism.

The Reef-World Foundation — the international coordinator of the UN Environment Programme’s Green Fins initiative — is delighted to announce the winner of the Green Fins Award 2023 — Evolution Beach and Dive Resort in Malapascua, Philippines.

Green Fins Philippines

The esteemed annual award recognises the Green Fins Member with the lowest environmental impact, as demonstrated by an assessment of business practice conducted within the last 12 months across 75 diving hotspots in 14 countries. This year, the award made a return at Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) 2023 in Singapore after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the last award was presented at ADEX in 2020.

Green Fins Philippines

The winner was identified from the network of hundreds of Green Fins Members around the world through a rigorous and robust assessment of environmental business practices. To be eligible for the award, the operator must have had its latest assessment conducted within the last 12 months.

As 2023’s Green Fins Award winner, Evolution Beach and Dive Resort is globally recognised as the top Green Fins Member. This means that they operate in compliance with the Green Fins Code of Conduct and have exceptional environmental performance every day at their dive resort. The Green Fins Code of Conduct is the only internationally recognised environmental standard for marine tourism.

Green Fins Philippines

Chloe Harvey, Director at The Reef-World Foundation, said: “It’s such a pleasure to recognise the team at Evolution with this award. Their Green Fins membership journey started back in 2012, and ever since then, Matt, David and the Evolution staff team have been pivotal in Green Fins programme development. They are not only an exemplary sustainable dive operation, but also an incredibly valuable voice in our network, helping to drive the collective global industry towards a more sustainable future. THANK YOU EVOLUTION!”

Green Fins Philippines

Evolution Beach and Dive Resort is a PADI 5-star Dive Resort that also provides Technical Diving International (TDI) tech dive training based in Malapascua Island — the infamous island for its thresher sharks sightings. They have been a Green Fins Member since 2012, and their steps to improve sustainability practices, which have resulted in this recognition, have included but are not limited to:

  • Preventing toxic chemicals such as used oil, cleaning products and sunscreen from entering the ocean
  • Consistently providing training for their staff and guests on best environmental practices
  • Taking part in regular marine life monitoring and data reporting
  • Disposing of all waste responsibly
  • Including environmental information in pre-dive briefings

Matt Reed, co-owner of Evolution Beach and Dive Resort, said: ”The last few years have shown that uncertainty is always just around the corner. This has made us more determined than ever at Evolution to ensure that what we can control is done to the highest ‘best practice’ standards.  We cannot stop wars and pandemics, but we can protect and defend our tiny speck of the globe.”

The Green Fins Award is organised annually by The Reef-World Foundation and has been hosted by Underwater360 at the Asia Dive Expo since 2018.

In the Philippines, Green Fins is implemented by the Coastal and Marine Division under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB) with support from local NGOs.

Dive, snorkel and liveaboard operators interested in signing up for Green Fins membership can find more information at: https://www.greenfins.net/join.

Dive travel experts Diverse Travel have expanded their popular Philippines portfolio with the addition of three new resorts and a new liveaboard.

Scandi Divers and Atlantis Puerto Galera Resort are now featured in world-renowned dive hotspot Puerto Galera on the island of Mindoro.

Atlantis Puerto Galera Resort
Atlantis Puerto Galera Resort

Scandi Divers Resort is located on the pristine white sand of Big La Laguna Beach. Surrounded by a tropical paradise with panoramic ocean views, this 40 room resort is a great choice for divers seeking a relaxed atmosphere with easy access to some of the best diving in the Philippines.

Atlantis Puerto Galera Resort is part of the popular Atlantis Resorts group, renowned for its excellent amenities and service. The resort’s 40 rooms are attractively situated amongst lovely grounds stocked with plants and flowers, built into the hillside just steps above Sabang Beach.

Puerto Galera has evolved into one of the top diving destinations in Asia. The resort town sits in a natural harbour on the Verde Island Passage, so-called by scientists “the centre of the world’s marine biodiversity.” The waters surrounding Puerto Galera were designated a UNESCO ‘Man and Biosphere Reserve’ in 1973, offering 40+ sites with a tremendous versatility that appeals to divers of all levels. Here, divers can explore shallow coral gardens, exciting drift dives on walls and penetrable wrecks, whilst searching for everything from tiny critters in the bays, to pelagics in the stronger currents in the Passage.

The exceptional range of diving has made Puerto Galera particularly attractive for underwater photographers, and both Scandi Divers and Atlantis Resort boast bespoke camera rooms and superb facilities for photographers.

Atlantis Dumaguete Resort

Moving onto the island of Negros, Diverse Travel is also now featuring Atlantis Dumaguete Resort. This beachfront dive resort incorporates 44 rooms built around a lush tropical garden, and features a pool, spa and waterfront restaurant, in addition to a spacious, well-equipped camera room.

Atlantis Dumaguete Resort is perfectly located for divers wishing to discover the superb diving of the Dauin and Dumaguete area, which includes a number of Marine Protected Areas. With its black volcanic sand, Dauin is known as the Frogfish capital of the Philippines, and a unique destination for critter diving. Guests can also take advantage of day trips to nearby Apo Island, Siquijor, and snorkeling with the Whale Sharks in Oslob.

Atlantis Azores liveaboard

Finally, the addition of the Atlantis Azores liveaboard to Diverse Travel’s programme completes the trilogy of Atlantis Resorts. This 32m dedicated dive motor yacht caters to a maximum of 16 divers in spacious comfort. Seasonal itineraries showcase the best in Philippines diving including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tubbataha Reef, Bohol in the Visayas, Apo Reef and the wrecks of Coron, and Malapascua to Cebu. For divers wishing to embrace even more diversity for a longer stay, Atlantis Azores is ideally combined with a stay on land at the other Atlantis Resorts.

Diverse Travel Product Manager Phillip Connor says:

“The Philippines is a truly amazing destination that offers so much to visitors. The variety of diving experiences, incredible resorts, and legendary hospitality is a potent mix that makes for the perfect dive holiday. Expanding our programme in the Philippines is a natural response to its increasing popularity amongst UK divers. We’re very excited about opening up more opportunities for Diverse Travel guests throughout the world, so watch this space for more developments coming soon!”

Dive holiday packages to the Philippines start from £1,799pp (based on May 2023) and include return flights London to Manila with 32kgs baggage, 7 nights at Scandi Divers in a standard room with a full board meal plan, up to four dives per day incl. tanks and weights, return transfers, local taxes, plus ATOL and full financial protection as standard.

Like many industries, the Philippine diving community was hit pretty hard by the global coronavirus pandemic and the resulting travel restrictions. After a year on the shelf, however, it’s good to know that the Philippines is on the way to fully reopening its biodiverse spots to tourists, with some of the country’s most breathtaking dive sites now back in business.

If you’re a diver raring to get back in the water, here are five places you can go for:

Malapascua, Cebu

The azure waters of Malapascua Island is one of the Visayas’ most popular places to go diving, with plenty of dive sites accessible to both beginners and seasoned enthusiasts. Swim with the thresher sharks at Monad Shoal, go through the various underwater caves in the vicinity, or head for the famous resident whitetip sharks of Gato Island.

Boljoon and Alcoy, Cebu

Macro divers looking for a good, quiet spot should consider the municipalities of Boljoon and Alcoy in Cebu. The reefs that are scattered along these islands house a wide variety of rare marine life, such as

green sea turtles and the Lembeh Seadragon. Admission to these underrated Cebu towns is now open for those looking for a getaway.

Moalboal, Cebu

The beautiful turquoise waters surrounding the islands of Moalboal, located in the south of Cebu, are home to a dazzling array of fish and other marine life! Swim with sea turtles, sardines, Frogfish, white tip sharks, and many more in waters that are accessible to both beginner divers and veterans. The tours in Moalboal are available year-round.

Siquijor Island

The small island of Siquijor is another must-visit diving locale, with over 10 different dive sites in the waters surrounding the isle. Siquijor hosts two marine sanctuaries, breathtaking walls to dive in, as well as spots for muck diving, all with their own sets of marine life which include reef fish, cuttle fish, barracuda, turtles, and so much more. One popular spot is the Sunken Island, which reaches down to 40 meters and is suited for experienced divers—though both beginners and veterans are welcome in Siquijor’s various dive spots.

Dauin, Negros Oriental

This small municipality half an hour away from the city of Dumaguete in Negros Oriental has 18 different dive spots, with five muck diving sites for those who want to search for life among the silt. Many attractions can be found off the coast of Dauin, including amazing reef fish, cuttle fish, sea turtles, shrimps, crabs, barracudas, and a lot more waiting for all divers. One interesting spot is the Ginama-an, a man-made dive site that’s made up of old car tires which now house a lot of marine life.

Divers concerned about safety will also be glad to know that businesses operating in these areas follow strict health and safety measures, such as constant disinfection and sanitization, limited capacity, and physical distancing.

To provide a venue for Philippine dive industry stakeholders to promote their products and services in time for the reopening of dive destinations, the DOT recently organized the Philippine International Dive Expo on March 19 to 21. Leading industry experts, guests, and diving enthusiasts from around the world attended the various talks and panel discussions about diving, and also scored good deals on diving equipment, accessories, and experiences in the Expo’s virtual marketplace.

With this overflowing support and the enthusiasm of the local diving community, there’s no doubt that these five amazing Philippine dive spots—and a lot more—will see an uptick in divers soon enough. Be among the first to experience diving in our awesome waters by booking your trips soon!

March is a great month for shark diving, both in the northern and southern hemisphere.

The Ningaloo Reef UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Western Australia, has 300 to 500 whale sharks visiting each year. March marks the beginning of the arrival of hundreds of these whale sharks and divers can enjoy water temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius (87 degrees Fahrenheit) whilst getting to know these gentle giants. Manta rays, potato cod and other shark species are resident in the area. Another advantage of visiting in March is to witness the coral spawning at the reef, which usually occurs a week after the March full moon.

Malapascua is another March diving highlight. This peaceful, friendly area of the Philippines has a variety of dives to enjoy including reef, cavern and wall dives. The real highlight though is Malapascua’s thresher sharks. This deep-water and elusive shark species has put Malapascua firmly on the shark diving map, with Monad Shoal being the only location in the world where thresher sharks are reliably seen. The Seadoors liveaboard offers thresher shark diving at Malapascua and other fantastic Philippines dive areas. March is a good month to visit to take advantage of calm seas and sunny weather.

It is the dry season in Cuba during March, which provides great diving conditions to enjoy the Jardines de la Reina, or Gardens of the Queen national park. This park protects Cuba’s southern coastline and is one of the most successful conservation areas in the Caribbean. This chain of 250 coral and mangrove islands contains abundant marine life, including the rare and iconic elkhorn coral. Sharks are one of the main attractions of the area including lemon, silky, blacktip, nurse and great hammerhead sharks. This marine reserve only allows a limited number of visitors each year, which helps to maintain its pristine condition.

More information about these March diving highlights and other great destinations to visit are in Best Places to Dive in March.

Offering an outstanding range of diving and incredible natural beauty, the Southeast Asian paradise
of the Philippines is now firmly established as a top dive destination for UK divers. With over 7,107 islands surrounded by one of the richest marine environments in the world, the Philippines delivers a spectacular diving holiday.

Forming the tip of the Coral Triangle, these waters are virtually unmatched as the global centre of marine biodiversity and home to thousands of fish and coral species. Divers can discover historic wrecks, plentiful macro life, dramatic wall dives, turtles, mantas, sharks and whalesharks. They can encounter elusive thresher sharks at Malapascua, hunt for critters in Dumaguete and Dauin, and drift over stunning coral gardens and plunging walls in Bohol.

The Philippines’ diversity and geography mean that this is an ideal destination for island hopping. Diving specialist Regaldive offers a choice of tailor-made, multi-centre itineraries that are very popular with their guests. Personalised itineraries are available for a week, 10 to 14 days, or more, and offer the chance to experience the Philippines to the fullest. An 11 night Philippines Island Hopping Holiday taking in the islands of Cebu, Cabilao and Dumaguete starts from just £852pp including 11 night’s bed and breakfast on a twin-share basis, transfers and 16 dives with Sea Explorers. Flights are not included but can be arranged by Regaldive.

The central islands of the Philippines are also ideally explored from a liveaboard and Regaldive guests can enjoy a Southern Visayas liveaboard aboard the magnificent Philippine Siren sailing yacht.

These itineraries can encompass the islands of Cebu, Cabilao, Panglao, Balicasag and Pescador, along with dives at Apo Island marine sanctuary and Dauin. There is also the opportunity to encounter whalesharks, particularly during August and September. Regaldive guests booking to travel before the end of September 2015 can save up to 20% on Philippine Siren trips, a potential saving of £484pp on a 10 night trip. Boat only packages start from £1,612pp (seven nights) and include transfers, full board twin cabin share, diving (three to four dives per day), equipment and your choice of air or nitrox.

With remote regions now opening up to liveaboards, a Philippines holiday also offers divers the chance to explore pristine and rarely dived reefs for a true frontier diving experience. The UNESCO World Heritage Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is one of Asia’s best diving spots and home to hundreds of fish and coral species, as well as 11 types of shark, 12 species of dolphins and whales, and nesting hawksbill and green sea turtles. Tubbataha trips can be booked with Regaldive on both SY Philippines Siren and the lovely motor yacht Atlantis Azores and start from just £2,015pp including transfers, seven night’s full board twin cabin share and all diving.

Siren Fleet Philippines Typhoon Update

As Super Typhoon Haiyan made her way to the Philippines our crew and local operations team made preparations to secure the Philippine Siren and P. Siren liveaboards, taking the yachts to safe anchorage spots in Negros and Bohol. The typhoon made landfall on Friday 8th November and we are pleased to report that all crew, their families and both yachts are safe and well. Our crews can be highly commended for their fast action in securing the yachts but also their consideration of others. There are several areas, including Malapascua, Leyte and Busuanga that have been severely affected and our thoughts are with those people at this time.

Many of the islands have been cut off from much needed supplies and are in desperate need of assistance for food, water and building materials with which to rebuild their homes and businesses. Our operations team in Cebu has therefore been working closely with local dive operators and the Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) to support the relief efforts for affected areas. On Friday 15th November the P Siren arrived in Malapascua to deliver 15 tons of food and supplies to the islanders along with 16 tons of much needed fresh water. She has now made her way to Leyte to deliver medical supplies and provide a support base for the MSF team for the coming week.

Siren Fleet Philippines Typhoon Update

The Philippine Siren was able to make her way to Batangas where she has been operating an adjusted schedule to accommodate the guests who were already booked and ensure they also receive a superb dive holiday in the Philippines. Reports from Coron are that the airport is open once again and we will soon return to dive in the region.

The Siren Fleet will continue to support the relief organisations and local islands over the coming months in any way they are able through delivering supplies and offering assistance. The company has also pledged 50% of the trip price for any new bookings on a Philippines cruise between now and February 2014 to be donated to the relief effort.

There is still much that people can do to help those affected in the Philippines, so we ask people to consider donations to the MSF or Red Cross.

Further updates may be found on our website at www.sirenfleet.com

Telling Tails on Malapascua: The Thresher Sharks of Monad Shoal

It’s already warm. All thoughts of having woken at 0430 are dispelled as the moon hangs in a sky of midnight blue. Somewhere along the horizon the sun begins to lift the night away and the dawn creeps in. The sea seems purple against the sunrise. You forget that it’s 0500 as the day begins to show its colours, but your thoughts are someway beneath the waves already. You share a knowing grin with your buddy. The boat slows and you make your final preparations to begin the adventure. As you jump into the ocean the thrill of what is to come builds. You waste no time descending. Upon reaching the shallower part of the shoal you ignore the otherwise attention seeking anemonefish and follow your guide on down, skirting by the triggerfish and leaving the garden eels for dust and sand. With every glance into the deep blue you imagine a fin, a tail, that large eye.

Telling Tails on Malapascua: The Thresher Sharks of Monad Shoal

As you kneel on the sandy slope just short of the cleaning station, your eyes adjust to the blue-grey water before you. The level of anticipation quickens your pulse. Your senses are primed to the sharpest degree. Sit. Watch. Wait. Imagine. Soon all you hear are your bubbles as your only thoughts are on seeing the famous denizens of Malapascua. Your eyes pick out a fleck of silver and a shadow moves in the blue. You inhale as your eyes widen and you strain to see more. The sleek, strong and elegant outline of a Thresher Shark emerges before you. Keep still. The slightest jerk will send these skittish creatures back into the blue yonder and down away from your sight. The shark comes closer and then you see a second and even a third or fourth join the group. They begin to circle over the cleaning station, allowing the cleaner wrasse to perform their morning ablutions. Their circles continue and they come ever closer. Now you can really see their sweeping, tapering, elongated tails that make these creatures so famous. Flick, flick, flick, swish, swish, swish. The sharks continue swimming, performing figures of eight. They swim around your head and over your shoulder with their large eyes fixed on you. The pointed face seems to be forever anxious and inquisitive. Squeals of delight peel from divers all around – but take care – the sharks can disappear as quickly as they emerged before you. It has been known for up to ten individuals to make an appearance simultaneously. Where would you look as this silver and blue fantasy played out before you?! Tempting as it is to focus on what is in front of you, take care to look over your shoulder as sometimes the sharks come barrelling in over the top of the shoal, down the sandy slope and right past unsuspecting divers looking in the other direction. Be prepared for a surprise! The sharks can appear at shallower levels too. Imagine jumping in, your bubbles clear, and as you descend to 15 metres, just below you is the zig and the zag of that beautiful body. At Monad Shoal you can have it all; sharks above you, sharks below you, sharks sweeping in over your shoulder and over your head!

Telling Tails on Malapascua: The Thresher Sharks of Monad Shoal

Monad Shoal is accessible to all Advanced Open Water divers and dives here are offered daily. Thresher Shark Divers have a permanent buoy line at the southern end of the shoal, which makes for an easy descent to around 17 metres to reach the top of the plateau. Monad Shoal is a submerged island (roughly the same size as Malapascua itself) that rises from the Marakina Trench, a deep stretch of water running between Cebu and Leyte in the central Philippines. Thresher Sharks enjoy the darkness (one reason they have very large eyes!) and so are generally feeding too deep for recreational divers to be able to enjoy. However, we all like to get clean of a morning and so every dawn, once the sharks have enjoyed their fishy meals they come to get ‘washed’! Monad Shoal is a collection of ‘cleaning stations’. Cleaner Wrasse including the Moon Wrasse and the Blue-streaked Wrasse make their homes on various rocky outcroppings jutting off the plateau. A sandy slope leads from the plateau down to the various cleaning stations. Most of the action takes place at around 32 metres. Here divers can sit and witness the sharks circling as the wrasse do their work. Other stations exist at between 30 and 18 metres. It is not unusual for divers to only make it to the first cleaning station and no further, since the shark sightings here can be prolonged and scintillating experiences.

The sharks seen at Monad Shoal are Pelagic Thresher Sharks. These differ from the Common Thresher Shark and the Big-eye Thresher Shark as they have a greater gap between the pectoral and dorsal fins. Common Thresher Sharks have a more obvious white stomach and tend to be somewhat stockier. Those who dive with Thresher Shark Divers can take a unique PADI Distinctive Speciality course to learn all about the Thresher Sharks of Monad Shoal as well as the history of the shark encounters in this region. The course also takes in two dives to tour the cleaning stations, encouraging divers to observe the cleaner wrasse and the behaviour patterns of the sharks, as well as to determine the sex of the individuals.

Telling Tails on Malapascua: The Thresher Sharks of Monad Shoal

Thresher Shark Divers also take divers to a second site where two cleaning stations attract Thresher Sharks and Manta Rays! Shark Point and Manta Point lie very close to one another and lucky divers can enjoy double helpings of these beautiful creatures in one dive!
