A sad day for underwater filming projects as The Underwater Studio in Essex, known for its TV and movie filming stages, has recently closed its doors. Operating under the name SWS Marine Services, the company cited insurmountable challenges as the reason for its closure.

In an official statement replacing its website, the Underwater Studio explained that it struggled to recover from the business loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, soaring energy costs, a writers’ and actors’ strike in the United States, and a subsequent decline in bookings contributed to its financial woes. The studio now faces expenses that surpass its income, leading to this unfortunate decision.

The Underwater Studio, founded in Basildon’s Burnt Mills industrial estate in the late 1990s by diver Fred Woodcock and the late Geoff Smith, was a notable institution in the British film and TV industry. Both Woodcock and Smith had extensive experience in the industry, having worked on well-known franchises like James Bond and Jason Bourne. Woodcock remained involved as the diving supervisor, with Glenn Whatley serving as the studio administrator.

After more than 80 years on the seabed, what is probably the wreckage of the British submarine HMS Thistle has been discovered outside Rogaland, Norway

In a groundbreaking revelation, a new shipwreck has been unveiled in the depths of the ocean, shedding light on the secrets hidden beneath the seabed. This remarkable discovery came to fruition during a research expedition under the MAREANO program, which is dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of the underwater world’s biology and geology.

While the submarine wreckage was initially located in the spring, its true identity has now been definitively ascertained during a recent research cruise. This tantalizing revelation leaves us with more questions than answers – is this yet another unknown shipwreck?

When the research cruise was originally planned, the team of scientists noticed peculiar structures on their mapping screens. The MAREANO project is a collaborative endeavor involving the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), and the Norwegian Mapping Authority. Its primary mission is to comprehensively explore the ocean floor. When anomalous structures emerge on their maps, they become irresistible targets for investigation.

Fuelled by an insatiable curiosity, the researchers swiftly initiated a research site to uncover the truth about these enigmatic structures. Were they geological formations or hidden wrecks hitherto unknown to mankind?

“I rarely find myself in the video room during these explorations, but my curiosity was piqued long before our submersible cameras descended into the depths,” confessed senior engineer Kjell Bakkeplass.

As the voyage progressed, the suspicion that this was a hidden shipwreck grew stronger. Astonishingly, this recent cruise had already led to the discovery of four shipwrecks, with only one having been previously documented.

Bakkeplass expressed, “The striking resemblance between the wreck structures we had previously encountered and this newfound discovery is truly remarkable.”

The unveiling of this unidentified shipwreck adds a thrilling new chapter to the ongoing exploration of the ocean’s depths. As scientists continue to delve into the secrets of the seabed, who knows what other remarkable discoveries await?

Why this petition matters

Started by John Hourston

More than 100,000 dolphins and small whales are hunted and killed every year. Most hunts are unregulated, illegal and unsustainable with unknown impacts on populations.

I’m a volunteer at Blue Planet Society so I can help to conserve our amazing marine wildlife – and I’m determined to help save dolphins and small whales.

I’m urging Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, and Aksel V. Johannesen, Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, to stop the hunt of EU/UK protected dolphins and small whales and transition to sustainable wildlife tourism.

Please sign petition calling for dolphin and small whale hunting to end.

Being a diver there is always something you hear about it being scary, dangerous or harmful. During our diving module at university we were of course learning about the effects diving has on your body and they aren’t all that great … and during my DM you’re doing stress and rescue training, learning about the dangers and how to avoid them and of course when you’re doing a try dive with clients you have to prepare them properly.

Cassidy Bartholomew

But what people don’t talk about enough is how thrilling and how peaceful diving is. Diving is an escape from the real world , you’re in a space big enough to make all your worries seem tiny, you feel the weightlessness like you’re flying through the water and it has worked wonders for my mental health in the most positive way just by being able to hear my thoughts and my own breath, it gives you 45 minutes of pure bliss. And of course being greeted by tiny seahorse, cuttlefish, octopus or if you’re lucky seeing a ray or a friendly shark on your dives is just an amazing experience (especially when with clients and seeing their faces the first time they ever see the sea life).

Cassidy Bartholomew

Diving is a space to feel yourself, communicating with others even if there is a language barrier on the surface by Speaking with your hands, questions followed by answers just by moving a couple of fingers and having full conversations with your friends without saying a word.

Of course a diver can’t ignore all of the possible dangers when on a dive and especially when they are guiding clients. But there is also not enough time in your lifetime to constantly be worrying about what “could” go wrong and not thinking about all of the things that are going right!

So go dive!! Enjoy the sea life in its natural habitat, enjoy flying and being able to escape for a little while And trust me…it’s not as scary as it may seem!

On a beautiful evening after work, Sean from Nova Scotia went out for another underwater exploration and clean-up.

Now what the heck is a bottle from New York City doing all the way up here? The first image has the words M.B. & Co. 145 West 35th Street N.Y. 1861 embossed on it. I couldn’t believe it when I came across it on tonight’s dive.

The next item of interest was another button, this time with the image of an elephant, the number 78 and the phrase Assaye Maida Java. A quick Google search reveals it was from a soldier from the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot, from the United Kingdom.

Saltwater Sean

M.B. & Co.

There isn’t much information available on the M. B. & Co in New York in 1861. However, many bottles from this company are available for around $35.00 on eBay and Amazon.

78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot

On March 8, 1793, Francis Humberston MacKenzie, Chief of the Clan Mackenzie and later Lord Seaforth, raised the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot. Formed at Fort George in July 1793, the regiment relocated to the Channel Islands in August 1893, and embarked for Holland in September 1794 to serve in the French Revolutionary Wars.[ It saw action in November 1794 during the defense of Nijmegen. The regiment arrived in England in April 1795, then sailed to France for the Battle of Quiberon Bay in June 1795 and the landing at Île d’Yeu, off the coast of Brittany, in September 1795, before returning to England.

In 1865, the regiment embarked for Gibraltar, and in May 1869, it sailed on the troopship HMS Crocodile to Halifax, Nova Scotia, arriving on May 14, 1869. During the summer, the regiment camped at Bedford to practice musketry at the military range. Alexander Keith, Grandmaster of the Masonic Lodge of Nova Scotia, hosted a farewell ball for them before they left in 1871. In November 1871, the regiment, along with 17 young local women who had married soldiers, boarded the troopship HMS Orontes bound for Ireland.

The 78th Highlanders (Halifax Citadel) Pipe Band, a grade one pipe band formed in 1983, is managed by Citadel Hill, which features a living history program with animators portraying the 78th Highland Regiment.

Fourth Element, a leading innovator in the world of diving gear, is proud to announce the launch of the Seeker mask, a groundbreaking addition to their renowned product lineup. Designed with the ultimate diving experience in mind, the Seeker mask offers an unparalleled field of vision and a universal fit for divers of all levels.

Fourth Element Seeker Mask

The Seeker mask sets a new standard in dive masks, with innovative design focusing on two primary objectives: maximizing the diver’s field of vision while maintaining the comfort and fit that fourth element is known for.

Key Features of the Seeker mask:

Wide Field of Vision

The Seeker mask’s single lens design provides a field of vision so expansive that it comes close to the feeling of not wearing a mask at all. Divers will enjoy an unobstructed view of the underwater world, enhancing their overall diving experience.

 Universal Fit

Fourth Element’s Seeker mask is engineered to fit nearly everyone comfortably. Thanks to new facial geometry and a soft silicone skirt, the mask molds to the contours of the diver’s face, ensuring a secure and leak-free seal.

Low Volume Design

The Seeker mask’s low volume design offers several advantages. It simplifies equalization and mask clearing, making it ideal for both novice and experienced divers. Additionally, the reduced internal volume contributes to a brighter and wider visual experience, approximating the natural field of vision.

Fourth Element Seeker Mask

The Seeker Mask represents fourth element’s commitment to pursuit of innovation in diving equipment. Whether you’re exploring vibrant coral reefs or descending into the depths of underwater caves, the Seeker mask is your ticket to a truly immersive and visually stunning underwater world.

The Seeker mask is available for purchase on October 16, 2023, and will be accessible through fourth element’s authorised dealers and https://www.fourthelement.com

I have taken on the 8K swim challenge this October to support Great Ormond Street Hospital. The challenge invites people to get sponsored to swim their way through the month with purpose and to raise valuable funds to support an incredible hospital who achieves incredible things.

Swim 8K

The passion to support this cause came after various friends had accessed the hospital with their sick children. It is hard not to want to show support for a place that has shown such compassion and love to people you care about. It is even harder to not pursue endeavors that raise funds for them to continue the innovative work that they do.

This hospital opened the first Leukaemia research unit in the 1960’s. It has had constant breakthroughs in gene therapy and was pivotal in taking part in the management of Covid. It is a magical place and well established for its history and high quality paediatric care, neurosurgery and transplant centre amongst a list of other things.

Swim 8K

The challenge is all about swimming, nothing too strenuous and all at your own pace throughout the month. The money raised supports patient families with expenses, funding meals for breastfeeding Mothers and funds accomodation for parents to stay overnight and to be near their unwell children as well as various other support programmes.

I chose to take on the challenge because I swim all the time anyway and decided that it was right to start swimming with more purpose. It feels good to be helping other people by doing something I love and it motivates me to do more, to be more active and engaged in causes that need help.

Swim 8K

Every penny is vital and none of us know when a hospital like this, its specialists, its nurses and its guidance might be all we have to save someone we love.

Swim with purpose. Swim 8K in October.

Bret Clifton Gilliam, a pioneering figure in the world of technical diving and a prolific writer, has passed away. He was born on February 3, 1951, and his remarkable life was filled with groundbreaking achievements and contributions to the diving community.

Bret Gilliam is best known as the co-founder of Technical Diving International (TDI), alongside Mitch Skaggs, a certification agency that revolutionized diving practices. He also held the world record for deep diving on air at one point in his career. His passion for the underwater world extended to his writing, where he authored or co-authored 72 books and penned over 1500 feature magazine articles. His work graced the covers of over 100 magazines, making him one of the most popular writers in the diving industry.

Throughout his diving journey, spanning from 1959, Bret logged an impressive 19,000 dives. His remarkable accomplishments extended beyond the ocean’s depths. He became a multimillionaire through the successful sale of several businesses, including Technical Diving International, V. I. Divers Ltd., AMF Yacht Charters, Ocean Quest Cruise Lines, G2 Publishing (Fathoms Magazine), Sea Ventures Ltd., and Uwatec. Some of these enterprises grew into multinational conglomerates, with an aggregate value exceeding $80 million at the time of sale.

Bret Gilliam’s expertise was sought after in legal matters related to diving and maritime affairs. Since 1971, he operated Ocean Tech, providing expert witness testimony in over 400 legal cases, ranging from defense to plaintiff litigation. His contributions to the field were substantial, and in a notable case, he played a pivotal role as a maritime and diving expert witness, resulting in a $12 million settlement in May 2015.

Gilliam’s influence extended to criminal trials and military court martial proceedings for the U.S. Marine Corps. He served as a Special Consultant to various U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Bret Gilliam was born at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, to Commander Gill Gilliam and Jeanne Gilliam. He was the eldest of three children. Tragically, his younger brother Chris was murdered in 1972 at the age of 16 while attending an outdoor concert in Puerto Rico.

His diving journey began in 1959 when he started training with Lt. Chuck Brestle at the Naval Air Station Key West. He attended several high schools, including Virginia Beach High School and Brunswick High School, graduating in 1969. In high school, he excelled as an athlete, participating in football, ice hockey, baseball, swimming, and track. He also represented Hobie and Hansen surfboards as a surfing competitor from 1965 to 1970.

Gilliam pursued higher education at the University of Maine and Bowdoin College, focusing on history and political science. Despite winning a National ROTC Scholarship in 1968, he was drawn to the Navy’s deep diving project, where he documented nuclear fast attack submarines. This decision led him away from his undergraduate studies and into the world of business when he founded Ocean Tech.

During his career, Gilliam held various diving jobs and even pursued a semi-professional surfing career. In 1971, he worked as a diving Supervisor for Vocaline Air Sea Technology (VAST Inc.) in the Caribbean, where his interest in underwater photography was sparked. Tragically, in 1972, he faced a harrowing experience when his dive buddy Rod Temple was attacked by oceanic whitetip sharks and lost his life. Gilliam’s heroic attempt to save Temple was commended by the Virgin Islands’ Governor, despite the near-death experience he endured.

In 1973, Gilliam established V.I. Divers Ltd., a dive resort catering to both recreational and scientific divers. The company also provided location services for various film and television productions. In 1977, he founded AMF Yacht Charters Ltd., specializing in luxury motor yacht charters. These companies were sold in 1985, and Gilliam ventured into the cruise ship industry as the Vice President & CEO of Ocean Quest International.

Gilliam’s achievements reached great depths, quite literally, when he performed a deep air dive to 452 feet in Roatán in 1990, breaking his own record in 1993 by reaching 475 feet.

His contributions to the diving industry extended to his involvement with the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD) and the subsequent formation of Technical Diving International (TDI). TDI became the largest technical training agency globally, with offices in 26 countries.

International Training Inc. served as the parent company for TDI, Scuba Diving International (SDI), and Emergency Response Diving International (ERDI). Gilliam’s leadership was instrumental in the early success of TDI until the company was sold in 2004.

Gilliam also led UWATEC USA and played a crucial role in its sale to Johnson Outdoors. His expertise extended to the medical field for divers when he served as the president and CEO of DiveSafe Insurance Inc.

In addition to his business endeavors, Bret Gilliam served as a publisher, editor, and contributor to several diving magazines, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.

Bret Gilliam’s legacy in the world of diving, business, and writing is immeasurable. His pioneering spirit, relentless pursuit of excellence, and unwavering dedication to the underwater world have left an enduring impact on the diving community. He will be remembered as a true visionary and a beloved figure in the world of diving and exploration. Bret Gilliam’s contributions will continue to inspire generations of divers and adventurers to come.

Tragedy struck the world of cave exploration as acclaimed cave diver, technical diver, and explorer Brett Hemphill lost his life while exploring the challenging Phantom Springs cave system in Texas. Hemphill, who was also the president of the non-profit organization Karst Underwater Research, dedicated his life to the exploration, study, and preservation of underwater karst environments.

The incident, which claimed the life of the experienced diver, occurred in the depths of Phantom Springs, known as the deepest natural cave in the United States. The exact details surrounding the tragic event remain scarce, but the cave has earned its reputation as an exceptionally demanding and treacherous system, requiring divers of the highest skill and experience.

Brett Hemphill was a well-respected figure in the world of cave and technical diving, leaving an indelible mark on the community. Throughout his career, he made pioneering contributions to sidemount configurations and played a pivotal role in the exploration, mapping, and research of underwater caves for several decades.

Award-winning underwater photographer and videographer Becky Kagan Schott, who had collaborated with Hemphill on numerous documentaries, expressed her disbelief and shock at his untimely passing in a heartfelt statement on Facebook. She reminisced about their two-decade-long friendship and their shared adventures.

“Brett B Hemphill, you’ve helped me since I was 18, you believed in me, you took me to places I never could have imagined in my dreams,” Schott wrote. “Your jokes and positive attitude were infectious. Your thirst for knowledge and pushing caves further was admirable. I loved hearing the excitement in your voice when you talked about caves. Your enthusiasm never failed, and it always felt new and exciting. You were a true explorer and a true friend.”

Schott’s tribute to Hemphill highlighted the lasting impact of their collaboration, which included filming documentaries in various underwater cave systems, such as Florida, the Bahamas, Yucatan, and Phantom Springs. Together, they received accolades, including Emmy awards, for their work in educating the public about safety in cave exploration and the allure of these mysterious underground worlds.

The news of Brett Hemphill’s passing has left a void in the tight-knit community of cave and technical divers, and he will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to the exploration and preservation of these unique and challenging environments.

In a heartwarming blend of eco-consciousness and charity, Diveheart’s adaptive scuba therapy programs are making waves by harnessing the power of recycled wetsuits. This innovative initiative not only aids children, veterans, and individuals with disabilities but also takes a significant step towards sustainability.

The journey begins when old, worn-out wetsuits find a new purpose at Lava Rubber, a recycling facility nestled in the scenic landscapes of New Jersey. Here, these tired diving companions are reborn as versatile coasters, soothing yoga mats, and inviting welcome mats. It’s a remarkable transformation that breathes new life into these discarded materials, diverting them from the dreaded fate of landfills.

So, the next time you slip into your wetsuit for an underwater adventure, remember that it’s not just a gear change; it’s a chance to make a positive impact, one recycled wetsuit at a time. Diveheart and Lava Rubber are not only fostering a love for the deep blue but also leaving a lasting imprint on our planet.

I have always been an outdoors person. From playing football when I was younger, to going on adventurous activity weeks and taking my first try dive back in 2003. This was my first step to exploring a whole new world.

James Soos

I joined the Royal Military Police in March 2010 and upon completing training I was sent to Bulford, Wiltshire where I honed my skills in both police work and soldering field skills. Perhaps one of the most memorable experiences was going to Kenya on a training exercise for 7 weeks, during which we got the chance to do adventurous training including a walk around a nature reserve with a Maasi Warrior!

James Soos

A few years later, whilst serving in Cyprus, I found a passion for scuba diving. What better place to learn. Here I completed my BSAC Ocean Diver and Sports Diver courses and spent many dives on the Zenobia wreck. During my second posting to Cyprus I completed my Dive Leader, Advanced Diver and Open Water Instructor courses.

In 2020, having been promoted to Sergeant, a milestone for me and my career, I decided that a new challenge was what I was looking for and in 2022 I left the British Army and moved to Greece with my wife. This is where I discovered the great diving opportunities Greece has to offer us wreck lovers.

James Soos

In January 2023 I was offered the chance of a lifetime, working in Truk Lagoon and Bikini Atoll – a scuba divers dream. With both being destinations on my bucket list, it was very hard to say no, so I jumped on a plane and made the two and a half day journey into the Pacific Ocean. This was an incredible experience and I feel very privileged to have dived in those remote and fascinating places, and to have completed almost 100 dives in each location.

James Soos

Upon returning home from Bikini Atoll, crossing the international date line and having the chance to redo a day, feeling like groundhog day but in Hawaii, I eventually made it back to Europe, where I embarked on the next leg of my dive professional journey. I completed an instructor crossover with Scuba Schools International to become an Advanced Open Water Instructor.

Now I am back in Greece briefly before embarking on my CCR MOD 3 course, BSAC Technical Instructor course and back to Malta to complete the SSI XR crossover and join their technical instructor programme.

It has been a long and arduous journey, and this is just the beginning, but if it was easy it wouldn’t be fun.

In the annals of maritime history, the Dunraven remains a captivating tale of adventure and misfortune. This cargo ship, officially designated as an “Iron Screw Steamer-Planked,” embarked on its maiden voyage in the late 19th century. Built with precision and care at the Charles Mitchell and Co. Iron Ship Builders in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, the Dunraven was destined to etch its name into the lore of the Red Sea.

Setting Sail in Grandeur

Launched on December 14, 1872, and completed the following year, the Dunraven stood as a formidable vessel, measuring 79.6 meters in length, 9.8 meters in beam, and 7.3 meters in draught. Its unique propulsion combined square-rigged sails on fore and aft masts with a state-of-the-art 140 PSI 2-cylinder compound inverted engine, crafted at Humphreys and Tennant in Newcastle. Steam, generated by two coal-fired boilers, propelled the ship to an impressive speed of 8 knots. The ship’s crew complement of 25 suggests it was primarily steam-operated, with sails serving as auxiliary propulsion.

Voyages of the Dunraven

The Dunraven embarked on numerous journeys, but it is the final one that left an indelible mark on its history. On April 6, 1876, under the command of Captain Edward Richards Care, it departed Bombay, India, laden with a “valuable general cargo” bound for Liverpool. The ship glided smoothly through the Indian Ocean, making a stop in Aden to replenish its coal reserves.

However, fate had other plans. In the early hours of April 25, 1876, while navigating the Red Sea, the ship’s Second Mate sighted land and a light ahead. Though the Captain was alerted, a sequence of events unfolded that would seal the Dunraven’s fate. Land was sighted too late, and despite desperate efforts, the ship struck a reef, rapidly taking on water. Abandoning ship became the only option.

By noon, the Dunraven was submerged in the Red Sea’s depths, marking the end of a once-proud vessel. Captain Care faced a Board of Enquiry, and negligence was attributed to him, resulting in the revocation of his Master certificate for a year.

A Diver’s Paradise

Today, the Dunraven rests almost completely upside-down on her port side, a mesmerizing sight for divers. Located near Beacon Rock in 15-30 meters of water, this shipwreck offers a unique underwater experience. The bow faces northeast, while the stern reaches the greatest depths. Diving conditions vary, with visibility ranging from 10 to 30 meters, and a North-South current is often present.

Exploring the Dunraven, divers can witness the ship’s fragmented forward section, with entry/exit points for penetration at various depths. Amidships, the wreckage reveals the engine room, boilers, piping, valves, and the ship’s main engine and shaft. The stern boasts a captivating view of the rudder and a partially intact propeller, missing just one blade. A remnant of one of the ship’s masts still graces the seabed, a poignant reminder of the Dunraven’s storied past.

While the Dunraven may not attract the same crowds as the famous Thistlegorm, its submerged history offers a rewarding and challenging dive, making it a hidden gem in the Red Sea’s depths. To explore its secrets, remember to choose a calm day and carry a couple of flashlights to illuminate your underwater journey.

For adventurers seeking a voyage back in time, the Dunraven awaits, inviting divers to uncover its mysteries and relive the final chapter of a remarkable maritime tale.

Swim gear, a towel, a mask and snorkel: what could be simpler? And there’s a lot to be seen from the surface, so that sometimes, breaking out the scuba gear isn’t necessary.

Did you know that RAID now has a swimmer-friendly snorkelling program? Perfect for hassle-free exploring for any diver, and a great alternative for anyone in the family who isn’t crazy about scuba.

This program has its official launch in late September 2023. To check out more about the program and to sign up with your local RAID dive centre.

Snorkeling is a great activity that can be done in almost any body of water. You can use rivers, lakes, estuaries and the ocean. Snorkeling is an easy activity that allows you to see many sea creatures, corals and aquatic mammals. Snorkeling is an activity that does not take too much energy to do. Almost anyone who is reasonably fit can do the activity. It is especially good for children and gets them in touch with the ocean. They can learn about animals, corals and plant life while seeing amazing things.

Objectives

  • Gain knowledge of snorkeling equipment
  • Understand the basics of buoyancy and water movements
  • Understand the basics of finning & movement for snorkeling
  • Gain knowledge of personal safety and care while in the water
  • Gain knowledge and experience of snorkeling
  • Plan for a snorkel experience

Why We Need This Course

Snorkeling is a simple, pleasant and convenient way to explore the shallow areas of our oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers. It gives both the professional and casual user a way, with minimal equipment to see what is below the surface. With the introduction of the equipment for snorkeling, the experience becomes even better with vision, propulsion and comfort. However, as with all equipment proper use, selection and maintenance are important; this course will teach you these basics and introduce you to the underwater world.

Type 1 Diabetics face enormous challenges with daily life and routines as well as managing ever changing glucose levels which affect mood, wellbeing and ability.

The Diabetic Diver

I have met many diabetics over the years who have been nervous about diving, worried about under water hypos, physical challenges that scuba demand and rightly so concerns about general wellbeing under water.

Scuba is really a sport that anyone can access. It has and can be tailored to support the needs and requirements of its participants. The guys at Oyster Divers were keen to support Sam Stimpson through his Open Water PADI course to certify him and to prove that Diabetics can dive too.

https://oysterdiving.com

This dive school and travel centre supported planning pool and theory sessions and open water training to guide Sam onto his journey to dive safely. Offering tons of advice and guidance along the way, the centre made the process painless.

The Diabetic Diver

Barriers arrived when the PADI medical form needed to be signed by a Doctor after a yes was marked down for a condition that may affect him on his course. The process of contacting Doctors was extremely difficult with medical professionals passing Sam around from GP to specialist and back to Diabetic clinics. A really challenging journey to go on to get a signature to be deemed medically fit to dive.

‘Previously I got signed off by my GP to do my Discover Scuba Dive with PADI. This time the policies had changed and my GP refused to sign. I was not referred to another person to complete the form. I had to go to my diabetic care team to ask for a favour as they didn’t have a procedure in place for this kind of request at this time, or one that was clear to me as a diabetic who manages his diabetes.’ Sam Stimpson

The Diabetic Diver

https://www.padi.com/sites/default/files/documents/padi-courses/2.1.5%20rstc%20medstate%20v201.pdf

The obvious response here is that of course not all people manage their Diabetes correctly or can have the condition and find it overwhelming and tricky to manage and at times or regularly out of their control. For this reason the importance of having the medical signed off by a specialist was not only crucial but understandable. It was a shame that it was so hard to find a person to sign it but the understanding of why it needed to be done made total sense.

https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/diving.73783/

https://www.ddrc.org/diving/can-i-dive/can-i-dive-diabetes/

Armed with a signed form the planning was underway with knowledge reviews to complete and E Learning to be studied. It was an exciting start after a long wait and Sam was eager to get going.

The Diabetic Diver

Sam was no stranger to the World of diving and had completed a Discover Scuba Dive some years before, the perfect entry level experience to taste the sport. He was also the son of a diver and had memories of wetsuits hanging in gardens post dive, equipment laying around the house and some very beautiful and well illustrated dive logs in his possession. It was envitable and important for Sam to get certified to connect with that part of his past and to break down the assumption that having a medical condition prevents you from doing the things you want.

https://www.thescubanews.com/2022/05/07/introducing-dive-force-marine-in-london/

The idea that an illness can stop you from learning to dive is a myth that most dive operators try to banish. Almost all dive professionals that I have met throughout my dive career have promoted scuba to everyone, an inclusive sport to explore a World that we should all have the right to adventure in.

The Diabetic Diver

The day arrived to start pool work and the location was in a beautiful school in Windsor. St Johns Beaumont is a stunning site with incredible grounds. The Oyster team were there and set up on our arrival. Tanks, kit, paperwork and staff prepared for the courses on the day. Sam’s Instructor Tom was welcoming, polite and funny and after meeting him several years before I was glad to get the pleasure of his company again.

‘Tom was a great instructor. I felt relaxed in his company, supported with his teaching methods and offered room to practice and refine my skills. He was a really charismatic guy with a good sense of humour and his personality made me enjoy the day far more than I had expected. Our small group had a array of skills and ages and Tom brought us together to work as buddy teams and a group of new divers all with different questions and anxieties.’ Sam Stimpson.

The Diabetic Diver

Sam was lead through each confined dive with support and guidance and was no different to an other learner. His diabetes didn’t affect his ability to master or deliver skills and he was at no point unwell under water. As an individual who manages his condition well his response to this was…

‘I deliberately didn’t eat carbohydrates or sugars pre dive. I lowered my basel insulin by 10% a couple of days prior to my course at the advice of my diabetic team at St Barts in London. They walked me through the potential dangers and stresses of diving related problems for Diabetics. They sent me videos, spoke to me on the phone and kept in touch via email to answer my questions.’ Sam Stimpson.

The Diabetic Diver

The session lasted all afternoon and by the end Sam was signed off as a referral to go and complete his course in his chosen destination of Malta, all organised by the travel team at Oyster. The battle of best dates to go, time of year and budget was carefully managed by Samantha Davey, Travel Consultant at Oyster Diving Holidays. An incredibly patient and thorough woman.

The course and this article was also heavily supported by Mark Murphy, Master Scuba Diver Trainer and Owner of Oyster who was receptive to us writing about Diabetic Type 1’s and scuba. A big thank you to him for his help.

Why This Petition MattersStarted by Hvalavinir: Stop whaling in Iceland.

We demand that Iceland’s government bans whaling once and for all.

Whales have taken as long as two hours to die during Icelandic hunts, according to a report by the Icelandic food and veterinary authority.

Last year, animal welfare officers were on board the hunting vessel from whaling company Hvalur ehf. and documented and filmed 58 of the 148 fin whales that were killed that season.

36 whales (24%) were shot more than once with explosive harpoons. Of these, five whales were shot three times and four whales were shot four times.

To put this in perspective it takes about 8 minutes to reload the harpoon that then needs to hit a fast moving animal in the ocean more than once if it fails to kill.

One whale with a spear in its back was chased for 5 hours without success.

The median time from the first shot to the death of the whales that did not die immediately was 11.5 minutes, and the agonising slow deaths lasted up to two hours.

Three whales were shot but could not be caught and have fought long excruciating deaths.

Horrific treatment of animals in this way is unacceptable.

We demand a revocation of the whaling license and that these brutal killings be stopped and banned once and for all.

Two offshore commercial divers and the director of a diving company have been sanctioned for exaggerating credentials.

Investigators from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have slammed the trio for false claims of diving experience that could have jeopardised their own and other divers’ lives in an offshore incident.

Following a HSE investigation, two divers from the Portsmouth area have had their diving qualifications withdrawn. The two men and the director of a commercial diving company have also received police cautions for fraud.

In December 2022 HSE received information that two divers may have obtained their closed bell qualifications without having the necessary prior diving experience.

There was concern that their lack of experience could result in a diving incident offshore as both divers had worked for contractors in the North Sea.

In order to work in the UK as a saturation diver (also known as a closed bell diver), a diver needs an approved qualification. There are only two dive schools in the world that currently offer the qualification – INPP in Marseille, France, and the Commercial Dive Academy in Tasmania.

HSE contacted both dive schools and obtained details of the dives submitted to the schools by the divers as part of their enrolment.

Inspectors then followed this information up with several UK diving contractors to check on whether the claimed diving experience was genuine.  Due to the legal requirement for diving contractors to retain records of dives for two years, the contractors were able to provide accurate details of dive depths and times for the individuals concerned.

The director of the diving company in question was unable to provide records, despite having signed and stamped the diver’s logbook himself.  HSE went to the location of the claimed diving, and with the assistance of the harbourmaster was able to demonstrate that no diving had occurred on the dates recorded in the diver’s logbook. The diver had forged 10 at this location in order to demonstrate he had 20 dives over 15m deep. These had been fraudulently stamped and signed by the director.

The other diver was very short of experience and HSE could only find records that he had carried out around 28 dives, only one of which was deeper than 15m. He declared to the dive school he had 106 dives, 26 of which were deeper than 15m.

HSE worked closely with the Fraud Investigation Team of Hampshire Police. All three individuals admitted that they had made false entries into logbooks and received police cautions for fraud by false representation under the Fraud Act 2006.

HSE diving inspector Phil Crombie said: “You need diving experience to become a qualified closed bell diver and making it up could put your life and other divers at risk.

“Offshore diving contractors need to use qualified divers and these men could have worked anywhere across Great Britain.

“If we hear divers have made up their experience in order to get onto a closed bell course, we will look very carefully at all of the records available.

“A logbook is a document required by law, and making false entries is a criminal offence. The police cautions issued meant that we were able to have the qualifications withdrawn quickly by the relevant authorities.

“Closed bell courses cost over fifteen thousand pounds for a diver – and these divers have ended up losing that without gaining a qualification.  It’s just fortunate that they weren’t involved in any accident or incident.”

Hampshire Police PC Alam Mahmmued said: “The men involved in this case did not have the requisite experience to undertake dive work of this nature, posing a serious risk of harm to themselves. This is in addition to their actions which clearly amounted to criminal offences.

“We take any aspect of fraud seriously and we were pleased to collaborate with HSE to achieve a suitable outcome in this case. We hope this will in turn reduce the likelihood of any further offending. If offending continues, then these individuals face severe consequences in the criminal courts.”

The Minister of the Environment, Dr. Yasmin Fouad, has declared a state of emergency in the South Sinai reserves following a shark attack on an Egyptian citizen. In response, Dr. Fouad has ordered the closure of a beach in Dahab until a thorough assessment of the situation can be conducted in collaboration with the South Sinai governorate.

Dr. Yasmin Fouad, who serves as the Minister of the Environment, emphasized the urgency of the matter by instructing the nature reserve staff in southern Sinai to swiftly form a committee dedicated to evaluating the circumstances surrounding the shark attacks and implementing measures to prevent further incidents, including beach surveillance.

After the shark attack, the injured citizen received prompt medical attention, and her condition has since stabilized. Immediate ambulance services were dispatched, and her health is currently under close observation.

Upon receiving a report of the shark attack, the Ministry’s Operations Room swiftly went into action, elevating the state of preparedness and initiating a coordinated response in cooperation with the South Sinai Governor and all relevant authorities. Comprehensive safety precautions have been taken to address this incident.

Last year I dipped everyday in October to raise money and awareness for sewage in our seas. The campaign that was sparked by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) and was completed by hundreds of thousands of people with a shared goal to make a splash about a really important cause is back on.

https://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/people/southsea-campaigner-who-completed-dip-a-day-challenge-in-aid-of-surfers-against-sewage-wants-to-feel-safe-in-the-water-3915984

The challenge being to take to the sea, a pool, a puddle, a cold bath, a lake, any watery space to dip in what will almost defiantly be cold water  to stand up for the right to clean water and less s*** in our oceans.

https://www.sas.org.uk/take-action/fundraise-with-us/dip-a-day/

A fantastic resource that SAS offer is a map to show up to date water quality results for people to decide if they swim or not. This kind of map should not have to exist in the first place but it allows people to try to swim more safely and to monitor their local coast and its wellbeing.

https://www.sas.org.uk/water-quality/sewage-pollution-alerts/

The alerts on many occasions have left swimmers, surfers, paddle boarders etc angry about the risks that seem to be heightening when thinking about accessing water for sport and recreation. Enough is enough. This campaign allows the people to be heard and for us to stand together as one about a cause that affects us all.

If you can, get involved with the challenge in October. If the challenge seems too big then tailor it to meet your ability and time allowances and just take part in any capacity you can. More people contributing makes more noise and that’s what we need.

‘The benefits of wild blue spaces to our health and wellbeing are irrefutable. And immersing yourself in cold water can calm the chaos, raise your dopamine and give you that zingy post-dip feeling. The Ocean helps us thrive. But it needs your help to thrive too. So, let’s Dip A Day in October to boost our wellbeing and raise funds to support our ocean-saving campaigns.’ SAS

Together we will change things. Join me and Surfers Against Sewage this October.

I love a swim challenge and I love a good cause even more. The thought of combining the two made it totally easy to sign up for the ‘Swim 5K in September’ challenge.

Chantelle Swim Challenge

Sands supports anyone who has been affected by the death of a baby, before, during or shortly after birth. The charity is all about bereavement support. They offer a national helpline, a support app to enable families to connect and help each other. They also offer information on bereavement support resources, where and how to get help in those moments when you need it most.

The charity offer all sorts of fundraising tasks that you can get involved in but the wet and watery option was of course my first choice. Swimming 5K in any environment, be it the sea, a pool, your bath tub or a wild swimming lake was the aim. Donning the Sands swimming hat and T shirt to show off the cause during those sessions was all about raising awareness and standing up for a charity that you believe do good.

Chantelle Swim Challenge

Many people close to me have accessed this service and really gained peace from its support. Loosing a baby can be a lonely and tough to get through tunnel and sometimes seem to have no light at the end. This charity is not about making it all better but it is about helping people get through a tough time.

I chose to swim in various environments and was heavily supported by some local pools and outdoor swimming facilities to complete my challenge. A big thanks to The Laura Trott Centre and to Lee Valley Watersports for allowing me to use there pools and lakes to complete my swims. Their free pool access meant that I could donate the extra pennies to this cause and to be able to speak to more new people about what I was doing and why.

Chantelle Swim Challenge

https://www.better.org.uk/leisure-centre/lee-valley/white-water-centre

It is easy to take your passion and turn something you love doing regularly into a way to raise money for people who can really benefit from it. I love to swim and be in the water and so this opportunity allowed me to do that with purpose. It should be me thanking Sands for the chance to swim with motivation and to feel like I completed a task that mattered.

A big congratulations and thank you to everyone else to took on the challenge and to those who organised it.

Swim for change. Swim for health. Swim to support a cause. Swim because you love too.

Picked up at a respectable 7:30 on Sunday morning to go to Gatwick. Arrived in perfectly good time and the airport was not overly busy. However there seems to be a virtually universal inability to understand very simple instructions. Please remove all liquids from your hand luggage and put them in a separate transparent bag. Virtually every piece of hand luggage being scanned had to be diverted for hand searching because they contained liquids. To the extent that the main belt was backed up because there was no room on the hand search belt for more bags. Surprisingly my bag was not diverted in spite of containing a large lump of aluminium, my camera housing. But the tray with my shoes, I pad, phone, wallet and dive computers was diverted. Not really a problem except that it was now in a queue with all the bags belonging to the people who could not comply with simple instructions. My tray eventually reached the front of the queue and it took the agent about two nanoseconds to say ‘that’s a dive computer isn’t it’. When I enquired as to why it had been diverted I was told that the agent operating the X-ray scanner didn’t know what it was.

Put shoes, belt and watch on, repack hand luggage and eventually go to find some breakfast.

The plane departed on time and arrived at St Lucia early. Immigration took about a minute. Bags arrived in about ten minutes and customs took no time at all. As it was Sunday the journey from the airport to the resort, which can take an hour and a half only took just over an hour.

Monday was taken up getting kit organised, booking in for diving etc.

Tuesday would form the pattern for most of the next three weeks.

Wake early and download the newspaper. Fail to be surprised at the lack of good news. However it was interesting to note that we had dodged a bullet by getting away before a complete melt down of the air traffic control system.

Do the Telegraph crossword.

Make a cup of tea in bed for Sue. Because she’s worth it.

Down for an early breakfast to get to the dive centre at 8:00 for 8:20 departure. Couple of dives return to base, sort out kit, shower and then a late lunch. Maybe with a beverage or two. Write up logs, review photos and get a few zzzzzzs.

6:00pm it is time to go down to the bar for a preprandial beverage and make important decisions as to which restaurant to patronise this evening. 7:00pm go to restaurant and dine. Following dinner maybe return to the bar for one or two more but definitely early to bed for a good nights sleep for an early start the next day.

Repeat.

I will not send daily bulletins as they will all be very similar. After a couple of days diving the frog fish count is up to three but the turtle count is only one. Have lost count of the blennys.

Water has always been regarded as having tremendous healing powers and the potential to cure ailments and injuries. Hot springs, mineral water, salt baths and many more forms of in water therapy have been highly recommended to support health and well being for centuries.

The Waters of Bath

For those of us who seek in water sports these benefits are something we highly regard. The ability to immerse yourself in water on scuba, a surf board, paddle board, boat or just for a swim is enormoumously beneficial for us psychologically and physiologically.

Free divers often speak about meditation when diving and reaching intense states of calmness to be able to achieve the depths and breath holds that they master though extreme relaxation.

Gyms and fitness spas are attended daily by people using steam rooms and saunas as well as plunge baths and Jacuzzis. The surge of popularity around ice baths has really spiked over the past year and so has people dipping daily in low temperature waters to reduce inflammation post injuries, to boost mood and to support better sleep.

The Waters of Bath

I visited the Thermal Bath Spa to find out more about the techniques used to support wellbeing. This is a truly unique location with hundreds of visitors daily seeking wellness.

‘The water fell as rain around 10,000 years ago and then sank to a depth of about 2km below the earth’s surface. Here it is heated by high temperature rocks to an estimated 69 ºC (156˚ Fahrenheit) before rising back up through one of the three springs in the centre of the City, namely the Cross Spring, the Hetling Spring or the King’s Spring which supplies the Roman Baths. Once they reach the surface, the spring waters are on average 45 ºC (113 º Fahrenheit). The waters then cool down to the optimum bathing temperature of approximately 34 ºC (93 º Fahrenheit).

The Thermal Resource Project, an integral part of the original Bath Spa Project, carried out extensive drilling in and around Bath in an attempt to discover more about the actual source of Bath’s thermal waters.  In the past, guidebooks have indicated that the source may have lain in the Mendip Hills, 30 miles or so to the south of Bath. Whilst the source still remains a mystery, the most recent findings suggest that the rainwater probably enters the ground through areas of carboniferous limestone to the North, West and South of Bath. The water contains over 42 minerals and trace elements. The most concentrated minerals contained within Bath’s Hot Springs are as follows:

The Waters of Bath

Mineral Expressed as Concentration (Hetling Spring)
Sulphate mg/l 1015
Calcium mg/l 358
Chloride mg/l 340
Sodium mg/l 195
Bicarbonate mg/l 193
Magnesium mg/l 57
Silica mg/l 21
Iron mg/l 0.5

The temperature and flow of the springs has been monitored for many years by the local authority and this data is used for monitoring the potential impact on the springs of any development within or outside the City of Bath. The flow and temperature of the Hot Springs are known to be relatively constant.

Between 1983 and 1985, the drilling of boreholes beneath the King’s and Cross Springs (68 and 32 metres deep respectively) ensured the supply of clean water. Thermae Bath Spa draws water from the three springs – the King’s Spring (from under Stall Street), the Cross Bath (with some water rising directly to the surface of the Cross Bath in order to honour the desires of the Spring Foundation to let an unadulterated source of the water rise from Mother Earth into the atmosphere) and the Hetling Spring (a new bore hole sunk in 1998 and 2011).

The water is tested weekly and has been consistently biologically hygienic. There is now an online computerised monitoring system so that flow and temperature information is available at any time.

Bath and its waters have a long association with well-being and the word SPA is related to the Latin phrase ‘Salus Per Aquam’ or ‘health through water’.

From the 1970s until the restoration of the Spa was completed in 2006, this natural resource went down the drain and ended up in the river Avon. Today, the natural thermal waters feed all four baths at Thermae Bath Spa, the Cross Bath, the Hot Bath, the Minerva Bath and the open-air rooftop pool.’ Bath Spa

In a surprise announcement via social media, the team behind IANTD UK have advised that they have made the decision to not continue as IANTD licensees for the UK.

The full announcement from Facebook can be seen below:

After much discussion over the Summer, the decision to not renew as IANTD UK licensee has been jointly taken by Martin, Amy, Phil and Tim. There are a number of reasons, which intertwine to remove the viability of IANTD UK.

Firstly, it’s no secret that we have not given IANTD as much time since COVID as it deserves. There has always been an ambition to drive instructor recruitment, support new materials and make sure existing instructors have the support they need. We haven’t managed that as well as we would like. Vobster has supported IANTD for several declining years, but the combination of current factors has made that too difficult. It’s time for someone else to bring a new vision and determination.

Secondly, the number of IANTD UK instructors is at an all time low, following the retirement of many stalwart instructors. It is currently hard to justify re presenting the opportunities for tech training in the UK as worth the investment to new candidates. That may change with a new licensee, more time, energy and a new vision.

Third, the opportunities for deep water training and price of helium are a sector wide problem, but has effectively drastically diminshed technical OC certs in the UK.

We have taken the decision to announce this now, to maximise the chances of finding a successor and supporting them in the transition. We all remain committed to supporting IANTD as instructors and IT, but cannot sustain the effort required for licensee activities. We will happily discuss our experience and the remaining opportunities with anyone interested in taking over as licensee. We certainly hope that they can enjoy the responsibility of running a licensee region that we had, until just a couple of years ago.

On the flip-side, it has been a privilege to steer IANTD from the dangerously liable state we found it in in 2010. Missing certs, dubious accounting, standards oddness, some rogue practice and no communication from licensee. We are happy that we are leaving it in a better state, albeit one facing very different external challenges, instead of internal disorganisation. We have deep thanks for all of you who have been with us on that journey to restore the reputation of IANTD as a training provider – it would not have been possible without you. Phil and Tim will retain their instructor and IT status to support the next licensee as part of a team committed to safe, high quality training.

With best wishes for safe diving,

Amy, Martin, Phil and Tim – IANTD UK

St Davids RNLI volunteers were honoured to welcome Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales to St Davids RNLI Lifeboat Station during a visit to west Wales to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Royal couple were in Pembrokeshire to attend a special service of thanksgiving at St Davids Cathedral in honour of the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. During their visit, they enjoyed a trip to a local seaweed farm and had an opportunity to find out more about the RNLI’s lifesaving work in Wales.

Prince William was an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot, stationed at RAF Valley off Anglesey, which included working with the RNLI’s lifeboat crew on rescues during his time in the role.

Their Royal Highnesses boarded the station’s Tamar class all-weather lifeboat Norah Wortley and were taken on the short trip around the headland to the new station. They witnessed the modern lifeboat being winched back to safety on the slipway.

Once their feet were on dry land, they had an opportunity to meet with volunteers who help save lives at sea off Pembrokeshire.

St Davids RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager John Williams says:

‘It was such a pleasure to welcome The Prince and Princess of Wales to our lifeboat station. They were genuinely interested in the work of the RNLI and spent time talking to volunteers about their different roles.

‘The Royal couple were invited onboard the Tamar class lifeboat to see our stunning coastline from a different perspective. It was great to show Their Royal Highnesses how we recover our lifeboat on the slipway and day-to-day operations. Our volunteers are very proud of what they do. Meeting The Prince and Princess was a real honour and something none of them will forget.’

It was also a day to remember for Isla Kohler, four and her two-year-old brother Albert, children of St Davids Deputy Coxswain Judd Kohler and crew member Ellen Evans, who signalled the end of the visit by presenting a posy to The Princess of Wales.

Litter picks are a super easy way to care for your local community and environment and allow everyone to get involved and engaged with protecting and preserving their homes.

Litter Picking

Litter picks don’t have to be huge events and you don’t have to attend organised events although these can often be a fun way to meet like minded people and provide a cool social occasion to catch up with pals.

The whole point is to show your support and to demonstrate a low tolerance to litter. To make a stand, an obvious one at that, that you want to keep spaces clean. A demonstration that you care about rubbish in your area and that you don’t support it. A way to help take care of your local wildlife and the spaces that are part of your everyday life. By doing the right thing yourself, you also show others how to do the right thing.

Litter Picking

None of us like rubbish and it can be hard to keep on top of it in busy areas especially over the summer holidays when beaches are packed and few bins are about but the obvious thing to do is to take your litter home with you and dispose of it properly there where you have general waste and recycling bins.

Amelie Stubbs, 10, of Southsea in Portsmouth spent some of her school holiday litter picking the beaches of Seaview on the Isle of Wight and was motivated by helping to keep ocean environments healthy for the critters that she loves to find at the beach and in the rock pools she likes to explore.

Litter Picking

Amelie hopped over from Portsmouth to the island in less than an hour with the super supportive team at Wightlink Ferries armed with her Waterhaul litter picker. Her natural interest in wildlife and nature mean that she enjoys adventures at the beach picking up harmful items that threaten the sea life she is passionate about. She knows she is making a difference and it motivates her and inspires us.

Good work Amelie Stubbs and a big thank you from us for caring so much!
