4. Marsa Alam, Egypt.

For a Red Sea shore diving experience, look no further than Marsa Alam. Sharm el Sheikh is the hub of Egypt’s dive scene but Marsa Alam is just as good, if not better, and has access to some of the best diving in Egypt.

This destination is quieter than Sharm and has fantastic shore diving, with the chance to encounter dugongs and sea turtles. A little further offshore, lie Egypt’s most famous dive sites, including Elphinstone Reef, the Brothers, and Daedalus Reef; all home to an array of vibrant Red Sea reef species and pelagics.

You can enjoy diving all year in Marsa Alam but visit during spring or fall to avoid crowds. Dive conditions here are best suited to experienced divers due to the depths and currents. Beyond diving, you can explore nearby desert landscapes, visit historic temples, or unwind at luxurious beachfront resorts.

5. Bali, Indonesia.

Bali, with its stunning shore diving opportunities, is a magnet for divers. Amed, located on Bali’s northeastern coast, is known for its vibrant coral gardens and the famous USS Liberty shipwreck – which is just a two-minute swim from the beach. 

The best time for diving in Bali is from April to November when the weather is dry and the water temperature is comfortable. Dive sites cater to divers of all levels, and you’ll encounter diverse marine life, from pygmy seahorses to reef sharks. On land, discover Balinese culture, pristine beaches, and lush rice terraces. Accommodation options in Bali range from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious resorts, ensuring a place to stay for everyone.

6. Curaçao, the Caribbean.

7. The Philippines.

The Scuba Place spent January 2023 exploring four different resorts in Indonesia. This is Part Four and their Trip Report on Triton Bay Divers.

“Remote, and Worth It” is the strap-line for Triton Bay Divers, this tiny island resort literally in the middle of nowhere – read on to find out if our experience agrees with this opening statement!

Most divers will have heard of the Coral Triangle – THE place to be when it comes to the best diving on the Planet. This is a bold statement we agree and despite the arguments from the fanatical wreck or cold-water divers, in our opinion, it is pretty accurate!

The Birdshead Seascape is considered to be the epicentre of the Coral Triangle, and the three land masses that surround this area are Raja Ampat, Cenderawasih Bay and you guessed it – Triton Bay. Right in the very middle of the very best place to be – it sounds almost too good to be true! 

Triton Bay is some 30 nautical miles from Kaimana, and the journey is all part of the Triton experience. A 90-minute speedboat ride through some of the most spectacular scenery you have ever seen. Speeding across some open ocean stretches, and then zipping through the channels between the islands, up close to the cliff face where the jungle competes with the rock for dominance, and the sea erodes the cliffs, making dramatic vistas in every direction. The bagan (fishing) platforms dot the horizon and are about the only hint of other people you will see.

Our crossing had us arriving right at sunset, one of the most spectacular that we have ever seen, and as we came around the final turn into Triton Bay Divers Resort, I can only say that it genuinely had an emotional impact. This place is, quite simply, breath-taking. 

Imagine a mountain face, covered in jungle and palms, coming right down to the shoreline where powder-soft white sand borders the lagoon. On that beach, picture a small collection of authentic bungalows on stilts, each separated by palm trees, and each with a small terrace overlooking the bay. This could literally be the place where Bounty adverts were made! Remote – yes. Stunningly beautiful – yes to that too!

Stiff legs after the speedboat ride may have hampered the climbing out of the boat and onto the beach, and then the sand, as soft as flour straight from the mill, made our first few steps awkward, but nothing will take away the memory of arriving here! Bags are carried to your rooms, all of three to four metres away. Unload the dive kit into the crate provided, settle in, and relax. And then relax again, just to make sure you do it properly!

Each bungalow is a detached timber chalet sitting up on blocks with 4 steps (high enough to keep you dry at high tide), that lead to a timber deck – the perfect place to sit and watch the clouds float by. Inside, there is either a king bed or two single beds, a desk and ‘camera’ table, and an open wardrobe, together with a water dispenser. The four poster beds are draped with mosquito nets and a ceiling fan keeps the air moving. The rooms are very well-ventilated with double doors to the front and large windows to each side. The ensuite bathroom to the back is open-air and surrounded by a high wall ensuring total privacy.

We were a little concerned about the lack of air-conditioning, but the building design and warm breezes coming off the sea make this far less of an issue than we anticipated. Leaving the doors open all night was our approach, and this was quite magical – like sleeping in the wild – especially when joined by a snack-hunting vole!

Triton Bay offers full board with three meals a day plus snacks late in the afternoon. Breakfast is cereal or porridge, fresh fruit, toast and preserves, eggs to order, pancakes and other hot items. Tea, coffee, milk, fruit juice and water are always available from early in the morning, which we found excellent, being early risers. Lunch is typically a light meal – a main and dessert, and the evening meal is not dissimilar, but three courses. The style is very much local and authentic, and to us, absolutely delicious! Curries were mildly spiced with a separate dish of sambal always on the table for those who like it hot! Rice and noodles accompany most meals, and those with dietary preferences can be catered for if requested in advance. I ate one of the very best curries I have ever had here!

The pure beauty of this place makes you forget that you are there to dive, but three dive boats – between 6 rooms – are waiting to take you off to over 40 dive sites that can be found anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes away. You get it I am sure – you dive on your own or in very VERY small groups!

The vast majority of the dives are right next to the cliff faces of the small islands and pinnacles that are scattered throughout the area – you drop in on a sheer rock face and descend down to the reef, and then the sand beyond that if you fancy a critter dive – or do both! The maximum depth we hit during our trip was 28 metres – the vast majority of the dives are less than 25 metres, making for some very long dives. The guides are true experts with the keenest of eyesight – it is their backyard, and they know it well, finding subjects to order it seemed. I asked to see a Harlequin Shrimp, and they found four. Tiger Shrimp? Six. Blue-ringed Octopus – two ‘fighting’ and two more on their own, Wobbegongs? At least three – and the list goes on and on! 

The reefs are immaculate and covered with huge soft and hard corals, packed to the brim with marine life. There are large rock formations, covered in colour, with overhangs and small caverns – the perfect place for a wobbegong to hide. There are reef shelves, walls, bommies and pinnacles, and then the sandy sea-bed where the critters hang out. This is, in our humble opinion, perhaps the most beautiful underwater landscape we have ever seen, totally untouched by people, and in the healthiest of conditions.

The list of stuff that we saw is endless, but it is safe to say that we saw creatures that we had never seen before on just about every dive. The Triton Bay walking shark, nudibranchs, crabs, squat lobsters, shrimp, wobbegongs, octopi and even 3 species of pygmy seahorse – we saw the lot! And it isn’t just the smaller marine life either – eagle rays, big sting rays, tuna and of course the turtles and wobbegongs, but to add to the list, whalesharks!

The whaleshark excursion is spectacular. An early start sees you navigating the bay under torchlight as you speed out in the dark to the open expanse of Triton Bay towards the fishing grounds. Here, the local bagans (boats with large platforms around them) drop their nets and light the water column, bringing in the bait fish. As the most spectacular sunrise lights up the sky for as far as you can see, pods of dolphins raced to the bagan grounds to join the whalesharks in their daily feeding. These huge animals used to damage the nets, so the fishermen keep back buckets of bait fish and sell them to the dive boats, and then throw the fish back into the water to the waiting whalesharks. To be in the water with these magnificent animals is always a pleasure, but we had our minds totally blown by having four full-size and one juvenile circling around us, feeding right in front of us, even knocking us out of the way! We had dolphins shooting through the group to grab a loose fish or two -the sound of their clicks and whistles was almost deafening!

After an adrenaline-fuelled hour, the beasties had had their fill and slowly vanished off into the distance – this was an experience of a lifetime, and we were totally lost for words on the way back – doing another dive en route of course! 

Night dives were incredibly special too – take five paces from the dive centre and you are in the water. Make five fin-cycles and you are over the reef – staghorn coral everywhere, and the home of the famous Triton Bay walking shark or epaulette shark unique to this area. A huge turtle sleeping in a coral bommie, octopi and squid hunting, and critters a plenty add to the haul, but let’s be honest – it is all about the shark! And at twilight on the house reef you can watch (and attempt to photograph) the mating of a massive school of flasher wrasse.

One of the best things we found about staying at Triton Bay Divers was the surface intervals. Not often something we get excited about, but imagine zipping along the channel to a private, totally isolated beach after your dive. The crew makes hot drinks to order, and biscuits of all sorts were yummy, but the real pleasure was being in the middle of absolutely nowhere – not another person to be seen except your buddy and the dive guides, who give you all the space you want, as it is their break too. Not another boat or plane, just you and the scenery. Our surface intervals got longer and longer each day as we spent ages snorkelling on the shallow reefs – the dive crew literally had to pull us out of the water!

I honestly do not have the words to describe how beautiful and peaceful this place is – a Jurassic landscape, covered with jungle, mountains in the distance, and the softest and whitest of sandy beaches (one is actually pink, but that is another story!) with the most spectacular underwater environment we have ever experienced.

To a certain extent, it pains me to tell this story, as it is a special place to us personally, full of memories. So special we almost don’t want other divers to discover it!!! 

It is remote…. Be prepared to totally unplug – there’s no wifi, no satellite tv, and the power is turned off from 11pm to 6am. You’ll hear the birds and the bugs, even the odd small rodent found its way into our bungalow. 

But it is so special. Triton Bay Divers delivers not only fabulous diving but an emotional impact. It is truly breathtaking, and I am genuinely thankful that I had the opportunity to experience such a place. 

Remote… but Definitely Worth It!

They are currently building two new Garden View guest rooms, a camera room and a compressor room, as well as adding a larger faster speedboat to transport guests to the resort in more comfort. On Emirates from London Heathrow it was a 7-hour flight with a quick two-hour layover in Dubai followed by an 8-hour flight to Jakarta. We had a longer layover in Jakarta so we booked a room at FM7 Hotel, a quick 20 minutes from the airport for a much-needed shower and a kip. The comfortable double room was £36 and offers a free shuttle to and from the airport. We visited Sulawesi before heading to Triton Bay. We flew from Manado to Sorong and on to Kaimana. If you’re headed straight to Triton Bay you can fly from Jakarta to Kaimana. We were picked up at the airport by Triton Bay staff and after a quick drive we hopped on the resort boat for the two hour crossing.
• Air temperature : Tropical – average daily temperature throughout the year is 28-30°C, with the humidity at 85-90%. The area has two main seasons, and it is best to visit during the dryer months from October to early June. 
• Water temperature : 26-29°C. A 1-3mm full suit or shorty will suit most.
• Visa requirement : Tourist visa is purchased on arrival or online for £30 or IDR 500,000 and is valid for 30 days.
• Health protocols : When we travelled, visitors were mandated to download an app “Pedulilindungi”. This required us to upload our proof of COVID vaccination and booster and approval was received within 24 hours. Upon arrival, we provided a QR code generated by the app, had our temperature taken and then we were off.
• Currency : Indonesian rupiah, US dollars or Euros on resort. We often find the exchange rate is better at the destination country. ATMs and exchange desks are available at the larger airports. There is no card machine (no wifi) so make sure you have adequate cash on hand
• Electricity : 230V with European style (round pin) two-prong plugs. Our adaptor worked without issue, and remember the power is turned off every night.
• Internet and Wi-Fi : There is little to no wifi at the resort. It’s the best place to totally unplug.

Packing tips: 

• Insect repellent : being this close to the water and with the jungle just steps away the mozzies came out at dawn and dusk. There’s always some spray at the bar for guests, but we were happy to have some in our bungalow as well.
• Rechargeable fan(s) : the resort shuts off the power generator at 11pm each night until 6am (or 4am if anyone is headed out to find the whalesharks) so a rechargeable fan or two was a necessity. They were also useful on domestic flights! Amazon has lots of options!
• Snorkel : make sure you tuck your snorkel into your dive bag and take it with you daily! We spent so many surface intervals with our faces in the water! There was always something to see!
• Snacks : we grabbed a few snacks at the local airport and the resort was happy to keep the bar fridge for us. Perfect for when that craving hit.

The Scuba Place spent January 2023 exploring four different resorts in Indonesia hosting a group of divers.  This is Part Three of their four part Trip Report on Murex Manado. Read Part One on Lembeh Resort and Part Two on Murex Bangka

All good things come in three’s right?

Well, with the Passport to Paradise itinerary, and the extremely well-thought-out and excellently executed travel programme, we have to agree!

Moving on from Murex Bangka to Murex Manado was the same format as from Lembeh to Bangka… bags outside the room before breakfast, a yummy breakfast, board the dive boat, and off we go – 2 dives on the way with surface interval snacks and drinks in between, and then, as if by magic (gratuitous Mr Ben segue) we arrived at Murex Manado.

We arrived by dive boat at the new marina and jumped into the vans for a quick 15-minute transfer to the resort. When we arrived, our bags had already been delivered to our rooms and our selected welcome drink was delivered. A much-needed shower was followed by welcome cocktails and snacks in the restaurant, an open-sided building right in the centre of the resort. More cocktails followed, and then more, and then dinner, and then sleep. 

Murex Manado is the most developed of the three resorts on the itinerary – perhaps because it is on the mainland, but it is still a very intimate and relaxed place to stay. Set in beautiful tropical water gardens right on the seafront, with stunning views across the bay to Bunaken and the marine park, there are only 11 rooms, each sleeping two adults comfortably in big double or twin beds. Each room is air-conditioned, with an open-air bathroom and a patio with day bed seating. Nine of the rooms overlook the beautiful gardens, and two are set right by the pool.

On our first morning, after a pre-ordered cooked breakfast which some people didn’t remember ordering the night before, off we set for our morning of diving in the Bunaken Marine Park. We had amazing muck diving in Lembeh, followed by reefs and muck in Bangka so we were craving some ‘big stuff’, and Boy Oh Boy – did Bunaken deliver!

Established in 1991 by the Indonesian Government, the marine park is an incredible success, and it is not only turtles that gather – dolphins are seen almost every day from the dive boats, dugongs frequent the shallow and sheltered areas for the sea grasses that grow so well here, and whales pass through the straits on a regular basis.

Giant clams are found here, and not just your average giant clam but 7 of the 8 species in the world are found in these waters, together with over 30 species of butterfly fish, and amazingly, 70% of all the fish species that are in the Indo-Western Pacific can be found here in Bunaken.

It really is a phenomenal place to dive – big drifts or a gentle bimble are easy to find, and there is so much to see – huge sponges, walls just smothered with corals and colours, green turtles EVERYWHERE – and for the fan of all things small and crittery (made up word but I really like it), the sponges and corals are full of crabs, shrimps and little beasties, making these walls dives great for macro photographers too.

Lunch back at the resort after a morning of diving, was time for a well-earned meal. Salads, fruits, Indonesian curries and other specialities, together with burgers, pizza, fish of the day and the like are all on offer, and always a desert too! 

So, that is the first half of the day taken care of………what to do in the afternoons?

Well – a snooze is always a favourite for me, but there is the option to go back and dive Bunaken even more, or stroll into the waters of Manado Bay from the beach – you will find a dark sandy sea bed and plenty of tiny things – this is critter diving right on your doorstep! Or the dive boats will take you to local reefs or even go out looking for dolphins or dugong. 

The pool is also lovely – right on the water’s edge, with sunbeds and bar service – if you need to off-gas a little then this is the perfect place – and the wifi works well here too, so catching up on the real world can be done if you possess masochistic tendencies.

Then dinner. Then sleep. Then repeat – it really is that simple.

So, in a nutshell, this is a top-notch dive destination with insanely good diving! A super relaxed and small resort, with great food (and cocktails) and seriously impressive dive guides too. What more could anyone want?

We will be back – and probably far more than once. This ‘Passport to Paradise’ itinerary is genius and gives a brilliant blend of diving across the three unique destinations. Lembeh is undoubtedly the very best for critters and all things that live in the muck. Bangka gives a lovely blend of pretty reefs and critters on the sandy seabed. And Manado gives us Bunaken – phenomenal reef and wall diving – some of the very best we have done – and then the chance to see whales, dolphins and much more.

So, which was our favourite?

We are always asked ‘Where is the best place to go?’ or derivatives of such, and the answer is always incredibly hard. A single dive can make a whole trip in some instances, but pound for pound, Indonesia is now my personal favourite place to go.

I loved Lembeh – it is more upmarket, offers gourmet food, and has mind-blowing macro diving. As a newbie to a macro lens, I had a blast here. Bangka was awesome – a wonderfully chilled and relaxing destination – powder-soft sand, beachfront rooms, lovely people and really nice diving. 

But for me, all things considered, Murex Manado took the title of ‘Best of the Three’ for this trip. The diving offered everything – from macro to mega-fauna, and all in a super-bright colourful and healthy marine environment – it is very much a destination in itself, and I would go back here time and time again, and maybe add on a little extension to Lembeh at the same time! Indonesia itself is stunning – beautiful scenery, and beautiful people, and we personally love the food too. 

The Government have got some things very right – the marine park for example, but we have to tip our hats to and shout out about Murex – they are totally committed to the environment, both above and below the waves. They clean their beaches, clean their reefs, educate the locals through structured programmes, recycle everything they can and waste as little as possible, use solar power, and you won’t find a plastic straw or bottle in any of their resorts. 

If you are thinking of where to go next, then the ‘Passport to Paradise’ itinerary gives you a brilliant insight into diving in Indonesia and what it has to offer – but take heed of our warning – you will want to go back as soon as you get home.

Divers in Indonesia held an underwater flag-raising ceremony on Thursday as one of the events in celebration of the country’s 78th Independence Day.

Ready for the second leg of our Passport to Paradise itinerary, we boarded our dive boat at Lembeh Resort after a fab breakfast, but this time, all our luggage was on board with us! So off we set into the bay, doing a dive, surfacing to snacks, teas and coffees, and then a second dive, before surfacing again to find ourselves navigating the Molucca Sea, approaching our second resort of the trip, Murex Resort on Bangka Island.

Bangka Island sits just off the northern tip of North Sulawesi. The small and remote island is nestled into the trees and right on the beach. This is a real ‘Robinson Crusoe’ experience – the transfer/dive boats come up to the shore, and we jumped in up to our knees to wade up the beach – palm trees overhanging the super soft white sand and a jungle vista sloping up to the sky behind the resort. What a place!

Bangka Island sits just off the northern tip of North Sulawesi. The small and remote island is nestled into the trees and right on the beach. The rooms are big – lots of space to dump and store bags, plenty of power points, a desk for camera, phone and laptop stuff, and an outdoor bathroom that even has a door to the side, meaning you can come in wearing your wetsuit and get straight under the shower!

Soaps and shampoos are provided, and there are plenty of towels too. And drying racks – we can’t do without those! All the rooms also have a freshwater dispenser. Behind the beachfront cottages, are six far newer and pretty luxurious Hillside Cottages – they still have great ocean views through the trees. 

Murex Bangka is totally committed to sustainability. The resort installed solar panels in 2018 and uses them to fuel aircon and hot water 24 hours a day. On the same note, no plastic bottles or straws will be found here, with a focus on recycling, effective waste management and beach/reef cleaning happening every day.

The final touches on the brand new dive centre were happening during our visit, which is very similar to that found at Lembeh Resort. A fully fitted dive facility with dedicated space for kit, benches, rinse tanks, and everything you would expect from a valet-diving style centre. There is also a dedicated air-conditioned camera room complete with ample charging points and air guns for cleaning and drying your housing.

So, beautiful location, great rooms with views, a great dive centre – it only leaves food and diving to be talked about. First the food – a blend of buffet and a la carte dining for lunch and dinner – you order the next meal before you leave the last one if a la carte is scheduled, or there is a generous buffet offering authentic Indonesian fare. Breakfast is a selection of juices, meats, cheeses, pastries, and a cooked-to-order option – good old bacon and eggs for example, but also local favourites such as nasi goreng. Afternoon snacks are laid out, so we certainly didn’t go hungry. Quantity was good, and quality too, more rustic than Lembeh but delicious, nonetheless.

So, a great place to stay, with beautiful views and sounds of the surf and jungle – good food, an on-site spa, and live music once a week………we just need great diving, and this becomes a bucket list destination.

With three large dive boats, space is great, and wading out to climb up onto the stern platform made for a simple boarding. A giant stride off the stern or backward roll takes you into the water, and big sturdy ladders are positioned for easy exit – kit and cameras can be passed up to the crew. This was very civilised diving, and with numerous sites all within a 20-minute boat ride, there is plenty to see without having to travel far.

We crammed in as many dives here as we could – dropping in onto the top of the reef, we found that the typical dive was a shallow reef top and a sloping reef down to depth where there would be a sandy bottom. The hard and soft corals were plentiful, healthy, and full of marine life. We found the usual reef inhabitants in big numbers – schooling jacks, batfish, snapper, and wrasse of all types, and some pretty impressive moray eels too. A pair of huge black frogfish entertained us for one whole dive as they hopped from coral to coral, paying us absolutely no attention at all! We encountered a few turtles, some immense puffer fish, lobsters and even the odd passing tuna made up the larger marine life. Numerous nudibranchs and critters drew us down to the sand……finding the tiniest of porcelain crabs gathering on a sea pen was one of the highlights of all my diving to date – almost invisible to the naked eye! 

In a nutshell, fab diving! The genuine blend of muck with reefs and walls here is great for everyone, and with such small groups of divers, catering for individual preferences isn’t an issue. There were even a couple of dives where we jumped into a great current, making a proper drift dive, thus delivering some adrenaline too.

And, as with Part 1 of this series of trip reports, the dive staff are incredible. How they see these things, we do not know, but they find them, and every time! Gentle, and relaxed, with no dictated dive times, and the sound of rattles underwater being incredibly rare, this is genuinely beautiful, relaxed diving at its best.

The only question left to ask, and the answer is: Would we go back? Begins with Y and ends in ES!! And then again.

The Scuba Place spent January 2023 exploring four different resorts in Indonesia with a group of divers. This is Part One of their Trip Report on Lembeh Resort.

17,504 islands make up the nation of Indonesia, and it has the second largest coastline of any country – nearly 55,000 kilometres. The highest island peak, the youngest population on the planet, the largest volcanic lake, and over 700 languages and dialects are spoken. There are so many things that make Indonesia unique and special, and we spent the month of January exploring four different areas to see for ourselves some of what it can offer our clients.

Spoiler Alert – we bloody loved it!!

This recce was also one of our infamous Come Dive with Us hosted trips. New Year’s Eve was spent in Jakarta airport after having flown from London via Dubai. We watched the clock on the flight announcement board click over in a very quiet airport before boarding our final flight to Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi in Indonesia.

Slightly jet-lagged and mostly hot and sweaty, we were met at Manado Airport by the staff from Lembeh Resort, and a very nice air-conditioned mini-bus. We set off for a 40-minute drive across the island. The newly opened road makes this a very easy journey. The last leg of the journey was then a 15-minute boat ride on one of the resort’s dive boats, across the harbour and to the resort – a tiny bit of heaven in the beautiful landscape.

What first struck us was how very small the resort appeared – rooms dotted up and down the hillside, a dive centre with camera room – a PROPER camera room – and a central two-story building with reception downstairs, and the open-air restaurant upstairs. Lembeh Resort has a stellar reputation in the diving and underwater photography communities, so I suppose we can be forgiven for not realising how small and select this place is – with only 20 rooms (8 Premium Luxury Cottages, 5 Hillside Luxury Cottages and 6 Garden Rooms), even when fully occupied this is a very quiet and very special place!

Do the maths – 20 rooms (if full) so 40 people. MAXIMUM! With 5 huge dive boats, that’s 8 divers per boat, and with two to four guides per boat, this means very special, ‘privately guided’ diving! Our group had its own boat and 3 guides, sometimes 4, across the 9 of us. Complete with O2, life jackets, spare tanks and dive equipment, toilets, towels, cold water (and hot with tea and coffee on double tank outings) plus fruit and snacks, there isn’t much more than anyone could want from a dive boat. Easy access from the beach steps and dive centre, and the crew are the warmest and friendliest, and truly expert, people ever!

The dive centre area is well set up – a two-person open wardrobe with shelving and hanging for all things wet and dive related, big benches to sit on whilst kitting up, showers and even more towels – and being a mere waddle to the dive boats – this is some of the most civilised diving ever!

Cameras – it isn’t called Critters@Lembeh for nothing, and photography here is equivalent to F1 at Silverstone, Rugby at Twickenham and Cricket at Lords – this is THE place, so you would expect the facilities to be pretty spot-on, wouldn’t you? Expect a fully-fledged and secure camera room, with shelves above and below each camera desk, individual power supplies with adapters, camera towels and non-slip mats. Separate rinse tanks outside, airguns, together with the resident Backscatter Pro offering support, advice, spare parts and courses. 

Our rooms were split across the group, with some in the beautiful Hillside Cottages. These really are on a hillside, and there are a good few steps up to them, but the climb is worth it! Beautiful with plenty of space, super-comfortable beds, lovely bathrooms, lots of storage and hanging space and spectacular views across the bay. Fluffy towels, shower gel and shampoo, conditioner and other such vanity items are provided.

Those of you who know me know that I am just a little bit broken from too many Saturdays spent on the rugby pitch in my younger years – therefore, we opted for a Garden Room. More a jungle than a garden, we were a stone’s throw from the main building, but nestled into the tropical greenery and both private and quiet. All the rooms are air-conditioned and have a fridge with snacks, plus bottled water and tea and coffee.

The open-air restaurant sits above the main reception area, and has huge vaulted ceilings with fans galore, keeping it as cool as possible. The food is fab – absolutely fab, and this comes from a self-confessed foodie!! Breakfast offerings included fresh pastries, fresh fruits, a range of cooked options (beans, mushrooms, bacon, hash browns, nasi goreng, noodles) and plenty of rijsttafel offerings too – Indonesian tapas for the want of a description. Overnight oats, fruit bowls, cold meats and cheeses and much much more – oh, and eggs too – omelettes to order and juices galore!

Lunch is a buffet offering with a huge array of choices. Salads, western style and local style foods, and a fresh ‘made to order’ station offering something different every day. Always a soup, and always a choice of desserts too, enabling you to make it as light as you want, or in my case, not! Dinner is very much an a la carte experience – a four-course menu every evening, offering again a great variety of local and Western choices. 

And then there are barbecue evenings, afternoon snacks and some incredibly well-crafted cocktails, good wines and a selection of beers too, available at the Pool Bar or from the Restaurant. And in this day and age, it is important to note that all of the fish served is locally line-caught, vegetables and fruits are locally and organically grown by artisanal farmers, and any dietary requirements can be catered for by the Chefs.

So, in summary – a beautiful place, extremely well set-up, run and managed, lovely rooms with ‘to die-for’ views and some proper gourmet food……..lovely people, and big proper dive boats.

All that remains to tell you about is the diving!

Lembeh is well known as the ‘Critter Capital of the World’ so we went with a bucket list of things to see and tick off. We did a couple of boat dives each morning, and then hit the house reef shore dive in the afternoon – this was plenty for us, but more dives are available, and then there are night and dusk dives too!

We dived some beautiful reefs – typical structure was a plateau of coral reef, a sloping reef and down to a black sand sea bed for a bit of muck and critter-spotting. Both North and East Lembeh offer some stunning reef and pinnacle diving – lots of colourful corals and marine life, including sharks and other pelagics passing through, and we did a few very good dives like these, but, we were there for critters, so critter-hunting we went.

With both black sand and grey sand sites, offering totally different critters, we were spoilt for choice. Currents were gentle at their strongest (expertly selected by the dive boat captain) and the critter-spotting demonstrated by the capable dive guides was second to none. We could almost ‘order a critter’ in the dive briefing, and the guides would find it, although they did struggle with the request for a polar bear!

We saw pretty much everything we set out to see, and being in small groups, were able to relax and concentrate on taking photographs too. The list of critters is pretty endless, so here, we will let our pictures do the talking…

Lembeh is a VERY special place, and we are already planning a return visit. It really is that good!

Key Facts

• Getting there : Flights with Emirates Airlines to Manado depart from any major UK airport via Dubai and Jakarta or Singapore Airlines via Singapore and Jakarta. On Emirates from London Heathrow it was a 7-hour flight with a quick two-hour layover in Dubai followed by an 8-hour flight to Jakarta. We had a longer layover in Jakarta so we booked a room at FM7 Hotel, a quick 20 minutes from the airport for a much-needed shower and a kip. The comfortable double room was £36 and offers a free shuttle to and from the airport. Our final flight on domestic carrier Garuda to Manado was 3 ½ hours. 30 to 35kg baggage allowance is typical.
• Air temperature : Tropical – average daily temperature throughout the year is 28-30°C, with the humidity at 85-90%. The rainy season is considered to be November to May with peak rainfall in January.
• Water temperature : 26-29°C. A 1-3mm full suit or shorty will suit most.
• Visa requirement : Tourist visa is purchased on arrival for £30 or IDR 500,000. 
• Health protocols : When we travelled, visitors were mandated to download an app “Pedulilindungi”. This required us to upload our proof of COVID vaccination and booster and approval was received within 24 hours. Upon arrival, we provided a QR code generated by the app, had our temperature taken and then we were off.
• Currency : Indonesian rupiah, US dollars or Euros on resort. We often find the exchange rate is better at the destination country. ATMs and exchange desks are available at the airport. The resort also accepted credit cards to settle our bill quoted in rupiah.
• Electricity : 230V with European style (round pin) two-prong plugs. Our adaptor worked without issue, and the camera room had extension leads with UK plugs.
• Internet and Wi-Fi : Wi-fi is available at no charge at the resort. The best signal around the resort was at the restaurant.

Price Guide: Expect from £2499 per person based on two sharing a garden view room for a 7-night itinerary with full board and 10 dives. Return flights and transfers are included.

Our Advice: Stay as long as you can! With a long travel time consider at least a week or talk to us about adding on other Indonesian destinations. We travelled to Murex Bangka and Murex Manado Resort on the Passport to Paradise itinerary. Stay tuned for additional reports!! And with numerous routes from the UK to choose from, any duration can easily be arranged.

Now operating as PADI Five Star IDC Dive Center, both Mars Scuba and Steel City Scuba are able to fulfill customer demand.

“Both our centers are working well, systems are easy to use, and we’ve maintained a steady increase in new customers who find us through PADI.com or another PADI vehicle, with referral traffic to our website tripled compared to our previous training agency,” continues Lobozzo.  “You need to account for the incredible marketing and training services layered into the e-learning cost.  Naturally, we’re willing to pay a bit more to have PADI backing us.”

 2. Enticing Customers to Instructor Courses: 

PADI worked with Dive36 in Kuwait to support the growth of their Instructor Development Course. “Marketing the instructor course was not easy, but when we switched to PADI, they helped with advertising and preparing a student to enter the Instructor Development Course,” says Faisal Albayan, owner of Dive36.

Peter has chosen to be a member of the party on the 12-night adventure when he will be happy to share his knowledge and stories from 65-plus years of diving.

Renowned worldwide as a pioneer of the liveaboard trip, Peter has been diving since the 1950s and has received numerous awards and accolades – not least a place in the DEMA Hall of Fame.

However, despite all he has seen and done over many years, the Banda Sea is a part of the world Peter has yet to explore.

He said: “This is an area of Indonesia I have not experienced before so I am anxious to see everything it has to offer. I am confident I will not be disappointed.

“My experience diving Indonesia has always been Komodo National Park with one trip only to Raja Ampat. I preferred Komodo for some reason but my knowledge of the geography of the Indonesian archipelago is limited at best – even though my wife and I took a cruise there over 21 days in 1983 which was one of the best experiences of our lives.

“I have not been diving for a while now and I am keen to get back underwater. And what better place than somewhere as special as Indonesia.

“In real estate they say it’s about: “location, location, location.” Indonesian diving is: “marine life, marine life, marine life”. The water in Indonesia is very close to, if not actually being, the most prolific place to experience a variety of tropical marine life, from the teeniest to the biggest, in the world today.”

As someone who knows a thing or two about the liveaboards – his DEMA Hall of Fame award was for his part in developing and evolving the industry – Peter is very excited about getting the chance to see Emperor Harmoni for himself.

Our beautiful, traditional phinisi-style vessel only welcomed guests on board for the first time back in September and Peter is keen to get his chance to sample the fantastic experience she offers.

He explained: “I cannot wait to see Harmoni as, from past experience in Indonesia, I know she will be a shipbuilding work of art!

“There are many amazing liveaboards built of steel, aluminium and even fibreglass operating around the world today. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this but I am a traditionalist at heart. I appreciate the workmanship, the great talent that goes into the building of a vessel such as Harmoni.

“Back in the late 1990s I had the privilege and pleasure of being involved with the Ombak Biru which was doing business as the ‘Komodo Dancer’ and then the Dewi Nusantara which was known as ‘Paradise Dancer’. It was when I was able to visit her build site, on the bank of a river in the jungle, that I realised the amazing skill of the traditional shipbuilders of Indonesia.

“What I most look forward to, beside the diving and reconnecting with special friends, is just sitting quietly, perhaps by myself once in a while, with a nice gin and tonic in hand – after all diving, of course – and letting my mind wander as to exactly where and how this amazing vessel came to be and immerse myself into all that it is!”

Not that Peter will be averse to sharing the odd tale or two.

“If I say so myself, I tend to be a quiet and pretty modest individual but under the right circumstances (after a couple of adult beverages) and with the right audience I can go on for hours with my story telling!”

This dive centre is a hub, it’s the best way to describe it really. It’s busy, it’s organised, it’s got tons happening at once and it works. It works in the best way. Open water divers sitting around with their heads buried in OW manuals, dive shed crew clocking tanks and kit in and out, boats pitching up post and pre dive. 

Nothing seemed to be going wrong. Any tiny problem was solved almost immediately. O rings being changed, mouth pieces replaced, kit set up for you, tanks carried to and from the boat. It is the best opportunity to be the most laid back holiday diver possible.

Cats, so many beautiful dive shop cats lazing around meowing, strolling about in the sunshine, reclined over tabled and being stroked and adored by clients and staff.

The dive briefings were thorough, efficient but really effective in the way they were delivered. You felt ready to go diving, excited about what you were going to see and eager to board the boat.

Nothing really beats that feeling of heading out to a dive site. It’s like an excited anxiety. Kitting up, talking about the dive, buddy checking, submerging and exploring. It’s just the ultimate adventure, way to feel like you are embarking on a different world and environment.

I love the not knowing what you will see, what the current will be doing, what the visibility is. It keeps you on the edge of the boat as it were constantly. It is also great to come together and vibe off one another under water. You want to point things out to your group, to have things pointed out to you and this was really encouraged at Oceans 5. There was a real sense of making every dive the best dive ever.

Travelling with my utterly fabulous colleague from Picaga Photography was also something that needed consideration. My one eyed, missing fingered buddy needed that little extra help to manage his dives. A completely capable diver but one that couldn’t always see what was going on outside his field of vision or manage to carry handfuls of kit meant that this was the place for him. He was fully supported and catered for and not singled out. He did exactly the same as every one else but within his limit. The message that PADI vigorously promotes. 

It is hard after so many dives in so many locations to get excited over a nudi branch or sea snake but in truth watching other, newer divers spot them for the first time is as special. It is really quite wonderful to say hey, check out that octopus under this rock and see someone’s eyes widen and smile. It’s why we all dive right.

It was great to sit around post dive and watch the hype of people certifying and being congratulated by their divemasters and instructors. Sander really is quite the enthusiastic dude, shouting hupla and clapping when people certify. It’s what you from from a dive shop. They can be daunting places to go, new, not knowing what your doing when everyone else seems too. It was welcoming, it was warm and it felt happy.

A crazy turbulent but what I can only call impressive transfer from Gili Air to Lembonghan brought us to the island. The waves were huge, the captain was amazing and yes I did almost throw up numerous times but alas to get to these places you have to take the rough route sometimes.

Blue Corner bound we arrived at the beach and launched our bags off a tiny boat and into a still cafe for a quick orange water and some grounding before figuring out our route to the dive centre.

This particular dive shop had been recommended to me so many times over the past few years especially from divers I had met in Indonesia travelling. An impressive reputation and lots of hype made me want to get there as quickly as possible. 

We took the 22 minute stroll from the ferry to the centre, passing incredible smelling street side restaurants and being followed by at least 2 very friendly dogs leading us along the main road. A straight line and a left turn and we were there. The very cool looking beach front shop with an infinity pool and beach side dorms was a lovely find.

Our names were already on the board for dives the next day and our room ready. Psyched to check out some new dive sites we got our bearings and headed to bed for an early night.

The centre was busy in the morning, courses underway, boats being loaded and our super nice guides preparing us for what looked like choppy weather and some potential dive site adjusting to avoid the rough surge. Manta point bound we set off and what we found were, well mantas, everywhere. The boat sped alongside the cliff edge into various bays looking to spot these beautiful beings at the surface, a stop here and one more there and we found them gliding along the surface, splashing as they went.

Nothing really prepares you for seeing Mantas, they are incredibly gracious and inquisitive. We got into our dive kit as soon as possible with them popping up around the boat. I was so eager to get in and the guides helped us get ready as fast as possibly, safely. 

Again, nothing prepares you for meeting these creatures. They are so huge and calm and they swim past without a care in the World. My reg almost fell out just in shock at seeing them. You almost can’t catch your breath in their presence. It was emotional and I was grateful to be there.

This dive was choppy and the surge by the cliff edge drags you in and out as you swim. The end of the dive and a move to Crystal Bay was a bumpy ride. It was nothing short of a pleasure and relief to back roll into the bay and feel still. We dropped in just above the coral restoration spot, domes and frames covered in corals, we investigated.

Flounders snuck along side us as we cruised along the sand bar. 2 or more free swimming octopus popped up from behind corals and disappeared into the deep. Flamboyant cuttlefish whizzed by us out of no where, glowing as they pulsed past. There was so much to see and the topography was beautiful.

The guides were incredibly cute underwater, looking so excited to show you everything, grabbing your arm to point out a stone fish or making love heart signs when they saw a garden eel. It was a nice site to spend an hour. Met by fresh watermelon, tea and cake on the boat we slowly made our way back to base.

A beautiful thing to watch happen at the spot, directly in front of the dive shops pool is the seaweed farming. As the afternoon draws to a close, people come out with baskets and torches collecting the seaweed and taking it to the beach to dry. It’s very pretty to watch at night with head torches glowing in the soft rippling waves. Kids slashing about in the water while their parents are working. It’s just a nice addition to get to see. A real part of Indonesian culture on the doorstep on the shop.

We checked out the coral restoration sites on the second day. This was so impressive. The coral growth on the laid structures was spectacular, soft and hard corals spanning over the entirety of some of the domes. I have to say that the sites in general here were just stunning. We were on drift dives and just glided over huge corals, past swarms of fish and around busy bombies. The drift made it tricky to stop and watch a particular fish or to investigate under a rock but my gosh flying over such beauty and just hovering still without kicking or moving was quite a wonder.

The boat crew really couldn’t do more either, helping de kit on surface intervals, armed with tea, fresh fruit and banana bread. Just a really marvellous bunch of experienced crew who executed the whole morning with ease. We felt looked after, cared for, inspired to dive more and most importantly safe.

Arriving on Gili Air on the Blue Water Express boat from Sanur, Bali is surreal in some ways. You drive out of the busy city scape, hop on a speedboat and before long are approaching a pristine postcard looking island. Fringed with bright blue water, palm trees and hammocks. It is hard not to fall in love with the place immediately. Begadans line up to take you to your accomodation. The sound of neighing horses and the waves crashing is unique and refreshing.

I had been emailing Rose Huizenga for what seemed like years now, pre and post COVID to plan this visit. Rose, completely accommodating to the never ending changing travel plans was just as I had imagined her. A entrepreneurial free spirit. I sit here thinking about how to describe her without just listing qualities But she really is quite an impressive woman.

We Rocked up at Gili Shark, a project that was born out of nothing but love and adoration for the ocean and supporting the preservation of Indonesia’s shark population. 

The base has to be mentioned here because it screams zen and calm. The perfect place to learn, study and just be. Beautiful rooms, stunning decor and final touches, jars filled with fresh coffee and granola. The environment oozed health and well being and was a spectacular hub. 

Warmly welcomed by her team of Sharkies, local staff and her Operational Manager Maisy, we felt at home and instantly part of a like minded community. All there for the same reason but on our own paths. It provided the the most gloriously beautiful spot to meet.

The burning question of where Gili Shark came from was easily answered by Rose. Of course it came about from a group of dive pals having a beer in a bar. Now, as a diver myself I can confirm that we have all had those chats. ‘Let’s just start our own dive centre.’ ‘Lets buy a boat and take people fun diving.’ ‘Let’s sack off the person we work for and start our own thing.’ It’s a common conversation amoungst travellers and especially divers. What is not common is people who actually do it and make those chats happen, turning them into reality.

Rose sat there talking to me with a fully operational, popular, well establish and respected shark conservation project and coral catch programme, a villa and island spa, her own school, two beautiful children and a husband sipping a freshly made ginger tea. It’s hard not to be in awe of the girl. She started all this as a backpacker, one with big ideas. I honestly couldn’t get enough of her story. Her passion to create a sustainable island life with a sound, thoughtful plan was jaw dropping really. Her very energy was inspiring. 

The base staff were in the background baking banana loaf and humming along happily, fermenting things and giggling with each other. The participants and students were social media creating and talking excitedly about their mornings, making plans to build new under water structures for the coral restoration project. Her vision was being delivered. Those ideas to create something positive were functional.

There were so many questions to ask, things to find out but the easiest place to start was of course with a dive. Where else is the best place to emerge yourself in the thick of the work going on somewhere. We donned our equipment and headed out for the morning dive with a Rose guiding us around the coral project. 

The dive sites were pristine. We descended on the coral restoration project and the Sharkies got to work, busily cleaning and tending to the young corals. Turtles reclined over them, basking in the soft current and finding comfort in the new spaces for them to reside. A healthy, flourishing site. 

‘In early 2019 our research team took off on a field trip to Nusa Lembongan to meet with Blue Corner Conservation. Thanks to Andrew C.F Taylor of Blue Corner dive our research team had an amazing few days learning about coral restoration and underwent full training in how to conduct this remarkable method. Back home on Gili Air, we immediately started preparing for our own coral restoration project which we launched in the summer of 2019.

In the summer months of 2019, we placed 60 hex dome structures between 5 and 10 meters on an area where rubble has the monopoly of space in the selected location at the North of Gili Air. To a portion of these hex domes our research team will add Micro fragments of selected s of coral from communities that are known to thrive in this area. We will leave a portion of each dome free of micro fragments to have sufficient space for natural recruitment.

On a weekly basis our research team will monitor the restoration site through assessing fish biomass as well as live coral coverage and the growth rate of each fragment. The methods we will use to collect this data include; Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) and Underwater Visual Census (UVC), weekly time-lapse of each hex dome, Remote Underwater Video (RUV) and manual measurement using vernier caliper for growth rate.

It is really key to not just mention Maisy but to take my hat off to her. A really experienced, intelligent, vibrant lady who seems to be the definition of multitasking and productivity. It makes sense that Rose hired her and trusted her to deliver her vision. She is as mega as Rose with an extensive background in scientific research and marine biology. With what felt like 50 balls in the air at all times, she very cooley lead the work that was going on and managed the programmes under Roses direction. ‘ Gili Shark Conservation.

The days rolled on with us acting as voyeurs to this wonderfully oiled machine. We joined a beach clean up and were joined by various tourists who had seen the posters around the island and on the social pages and come along. You didn’t need to move more than a meter to collect almost a bag of litter, debris that had arrived from neighbouring islands and from currents riding past the Gillis. It was sad in lots of ways but positive to see so many like minded folk coming together to clean up. It was significant because beach cleans don’t need to be organised, anyone can potter along a stretch of beach and collect trash but a regular organised clean motivates people. It gives you a time and a place to be to take part. It highlights to others that it needs doing. In bigger numbers comes impact.

The sustainability of projects is key. It is easy to start something but keeping it going, keeping it maintained and productive is a whole different ball game. The core injection of local staff to all that goes on here is underrated. The relationships with people from the area are immeasurably valuable. The knowledge and passion they have about where they are from and the respect for the ocean is beautiful. Rose and Andreas know that. They consider it in all that they do and strong partnerships have been born and will continue to be born because of that understanding and appreciation of Indonesians, their traditions and their culture. 

On our nearly last day we sat down by the boat at the end of a busy dive day. Rose’s children were playing on the beach front, tiny beach blonde, sun kissed babies collecting crabs with their little Indonesia friends and carefully putting them back in the water, jumping off logs and into sea puddles. I listened to them talk English to the participants, Bahasa to the lovely local ladies they were with. It made me see the longevity in the work here. Good intentions live on. Good people raise good people with core values and they grow the next generation of people who care. In those few moments I saw the life cycle. The relationships that are formed, the concern that these kids will inevitable adopt from their Mum and Dad and hopefully continue. 

I would urge anyone thinking about doing something positive and out of the ordinary to visit this island and to sit down and have a ginger tea with Rose. It’s a tea you will always remember. Explore marine biology and conservation, gain an understanding of why it is all so, so important to our existence and life balance.
