Embark on an Arctic Adventure with Liveaboard Scuba Diving

Picture this: crystal-clear waters, icy landscapes, and a sense of serenity that only the Arctic can provide. For avid scuba divers seeking a unique and challenging experience, the Arctic offers a surreal underwater world waiting to be explored. Liveaboard expeditions in the Arctic have become the ultimate way to dive into the heart of this frozen wonderland.

Setting Sail:

Setting the stage for our frosty odyssey is the liveaboard vessel that will be our floating home throughout this arctic aqua-adventure. Imagine a sturdy ship, equipped with all the necessary amenities to keep you warm and comfortable between dives, while providing breathtaking views of the Arctic landscape.

The Dive Sites:

The Arctic boasts an underwater realm like no other, with its unique marine life and otherworldly ice formations. Diving enthusiasts will be treated to an array of dive sites that include submerged icebergs, kelp forests, and a chance encounter with some of the Arctic’s most elusive inhabitants, such as seals and even the occasional polar bear.

Challenges and Rewards:

Scuba diving in the Arctic comes with its own set of challenges, from frigid temperatures to limited visibility. However, these obstacles only add to the allure of the experience. Imagine descending into the icy waters, surrounded by an ethereal blue glow, and discovering a world of marine life that has adapted to thrive in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

Wildlife Encounters:

One of the highlights of Arctic liveaboard diving is the potential for incredible wildlife encounters. Seals gracefully glide past, curious fish weave through kelp forests, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a majestic polar bear patrolling the ice floes from below the surface.

Diving in the Midnight Sun:

One of the most surreal aspects of Arctic liveaboard diving is the phenomenon of the midnight sun. Picture yourself plunging into the Arctic waters under a sun that never sets, casting an otherworldly glow on the icy landscape above and creating an unforgettable atmosphere for your underwater explorations.

Gear and Preparation:

Preparation is key for any Arctic diving expedition. From insulated drysuits to specialized dive gear designed for cold-water environments, participants will need to gear up for the unique challenges presented by the Arctic waters. Fortunately, expert guides and instructors aboard the liveaboard are there to ensure a safe and enjoyable diving experience for all.

Conclusion:

Embarking on a liveaboard scuba diving adventure in the Arctic is not just a journey beneath the waves; it’s a plunge into a frozen world teeming with life and beauty. As the liveaboard sails through the Arctic waters, and divers explore the depths below, each moment becomes a testament to the resilience of life in one of the planet’s most extreme environments. So, if you’re ready to trade the warmth of tropical waters for the icy embrace of the Arctic, prepare for an underwater adventure like no other—one that will leave you with memories as unforgettable as the landscapes themselves.

SeaLife is introducing a Lens Adapter for their SportDiver underwater Smartphone housing.

67mm and 52mm threaded lenses may be mounted to the SportDiver smartphone housing allowing the underwater photographer to expand their macro and wide-angle creativity.   The precision lens adapter, constructed with hard anodized machined aluminum and stainless-steel hardware, mounts directly to the SportDiver’s lens port for a secure, solid fit.   The adapter allows for easy horizontal and vertical lens movement adjustments to center the lens over the phone’s intended shooting lens.

Sealife SportDiver Lens Adapter

The adapter comes threaded with a 67mm opening, for larger diameter lenses. A 52mm threaded ring is included for attaching smaller 52 mm lenses.   For other lenses, a step-down ring may be obtained through dive photo or photography shops.

SeaLife is also introducing a 52mm 4-element 0.7x wide angle lens that fits onto the Lens Adapter; the new SeaLife 52mm Wide-Angle Dome lens (Item SL054) increases the phone lens shooting angle by 43%, allowing for a closer shooting distance and improved edge sharpness.

Sealife SportDiver Lens Adapter

With the multitude of underwater lenses and a wide variety of smartphone lenses available, underwater photographers now have virtually unlimited choices available to them. SeaLife recommends using wide-angle lenses with optical magnification between 0.5x and 0.75x magnification, which allows closer shooting distances while fitting the subject into the image frame.  SeaLife also recommends using macro lenses with diopter correct between 3x and 10x.  Macro lenses will allow you to get closer to the subject while maintaining image sharpness.  Due to the wide variety of smartphone phone lenses in the market, some lens settings may not be compatible.

The lens adapter will be available at Sealife’s USA network of dealers by January 2024.

In a plea for public assistance, local authorities are seeking witnesses to come forward in the wake of a tragic incident on the Central Coast that claimed the life of a 51-year-old man. The victim passed away in hospital after being rescued from the water at Terrigal Haven last month.

On the evening of Friday, October 20, 2023, emergency services responded to distress calls reporting an unconscious man in the water at approximately 5:45 pm. According to police reports, the man had been engaged in scuba diving with a friend when adverse weather conditions prompted their return to shore. During an attempt to ascend the rocks, the 51-year-old was struck by a powerful wave, causing him to slip, hit his head, and fall back into the water.

A Good Samaritan, identified as an unidentified surfer, courageously entered the water on his surfboard, successfully retrieving the injured man. Once ashore, CPR was administered until the arrival of paramedics from NSW Ambulance. Despite immediate efforts to stabilize him, the victim was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in critical condition. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries a few days later, as confirmed by hospital authorities who subsequently notified the police.

Brisbane Water Police District detectives have taken charge of the investigation on behalf of the Coroner. They are now seeking the public’s help in identifying the heroic surfer who played a pivotal role in rescuing the victim. Detectives believe that this individual may possess crucial information to aid their ongoing inquiries.

As the investigation progresses, anyone with pertinent information is strongly encouraged to reach out to Gosford Police Station or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

In the interest of maintaining confidentiality, individuals can also submit information through the Crime Stoppers website: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. The public is reminded to refrain from reporting information via NSW Police social media pages. The authorities assure that all provided information will be treated with the utmost discretion.

SeaLife, the leading maker of underwater imaging gear, has introduced a new Wide Angle Dome Lens for their popular SportDiver underwater smartphone housing that increases the phone’s camera lens field-of view by 43% and allows photographers to get closer to the subject while fitting everything into the image frame.

The new dome lens mounts directly to the SportDiver housing’s lens port without any lens adapter.  The 0.65x dome lens requires no skill, training, or adjustment; simply mount it and shoot. Split shots that split the topside view with the undersea view are especially easy. There’s a safety lanyard included to keep the lens with the housing should it get bumped off.

SportDiver 6" Wide Angle Lens

The 6” Wide Angle Dome Lens design uses high-grade acrylic optics arranged in a 2-element/2- group array that delivers crisp edge-to-edge sharpness.   “This is a very versatile lens that significantly improves the phone lens’ performance and allows for some creative underwater images and video” says Bjorn Harms, SeaLife’s Vice President of Product Development.

The lens has a 15.6mm film-equivalent effective focal length when used, for example, with the SeaLife SportDiver and the iPhone 15 Pro’s 24mm “Ultrawide” camera lens. The lens is waterproof to 130ft/40m and is positively buoyant.   The new 6”/15cm Dome Lens fits all SeaLife SportDiver housings.

SportDiver 6" Wide Angle Lens

The lens includes a rotatable sunshade built around the optics to help control stray sunlight. The new lens is a “wet lens” and easily attaches and removes underwater, the inner lens chambers are air-filled, and the lens is therefore buoyant. A lanyard is included and prevents the lens from accidentally detaching when bumped or in rougher water conditions. The 6”/15cm Dome Lens weighs 17.4 ounces (493 grams).

The 6”/15cm Dome Lens will be available in January 2024.

Marine ecosystems contain fascinating flora and fauna, but adventuring underwater can be dangerous. Discover some essential tips for staying safe while diving.

Scuba diving is an exciting activity that allows divers to explore the beauty beneath the water’s surface. However, scuba diving also comes with potential risks. For this reason, most scuba divers receive extensive training to prepare for diving and to maintain safety standards. Whether they’re seasoned divers or just beginning, this is how scuba divers stay safe while underwater

Training and Certification

Proper training and certification are essential for safe diving. Scuba divers must be trained on fundamental diving skills, including correct breathing techniques, proper equipment use, and safety protocols. By learning the essential safety protocols, divers can avoid spontaneous actions that could put them in harm’s way. Fortunately, organizations like the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) offer certification courses that are recognized worldwide. Scuba divers must also maintain their certifications by taking refresher courses to keep up with changing safety standards.

Checking Equipment

Before diving, scuba divers should always double-check their equipment to ensure everything is in good condition. This includes checking the air supply, pressure gauge, regulator, mask, fins, and buoyancy compensator device (BCD). Additionally, divers should ensure there are no leaks, damage, or other potential hazards related to their gear. If a problem is detected, divers should immediately address it or seek professional assistance.

Diving With a Buddy

Diving with a partner or a group is an excellent way for scuba divers to stay safe during underwater adventures. Having a buddy not only increases safety by providing a backup option in case of an emergency but also enhances the overall diving experience. Divers should plan their dives and communicate with their partners beforehand to verify safe navigation, diving signals, and other relevant information. Diving alone should be avoided whenever possible.

Understanding Safe Diving Limits

Scuba divers must pay attention to certain limits, such as depth, time, and decompression. These limits exist to ensure their well-being and prevent potential hazards such as nitrogen narcosis or decompression sickness. Divers should educate themselves on these limits to avoid exceeding them and putting themselves in danger. Furthermore, divers should listen to their bodies and carefully ascend to the surface if they feel any discomfort or signs of physical exhaustion.

Respecting the Ocean and Marine Environment

Scuba divers should always be mindful of their surrounding environment and avoid touching or harming marine life. This not only helps preserve the natural beauty of the ocean but also ensures the safety of the divers. Additionally, divers should follow proper protocols to avoid disturbing the ocean bed or damaging underwater structures with their boats. Furthermore, understanding how marine batteries make a boat more eco-friendly will help scuba divers prevent unnecessary contamination during a diving trip.

Having an Incredible Underwater Experience

Scuba diving remains one of the most exciting and rewarding activities for marine adventurers. However, safety should always be a top priority. By following the above measures, divers can minimize risks and enjoy the thrill of the underwater world safely. Remember that proper training, equipment readiness, having a buddy, understanding safe diving limits, and respecting the marine environment are essential for staying safe while taking in the scenery. Here’s to having an incredible underwater experience

A scuba diver reportedly found himself in a challenging situation off the coast of Miami, left treading water for approximately half an hour after the dive boat he was on started taking on water. The incident occurred near Sunny Isles Beach on a Wednesday morning, according to the Coast Guard.

The unnamed diver was left stranded when the vessel began experiencing difficulties and had to return to shore without him, as reported by the Miami Herald. Following a call received by the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue around 9:30 a.m., a fire rescue boat promptly picked up the diver at 10 a.m. Fortunately, the diver was safely returned to the Haulover Marina Center and did not require any medical attention.

A video captured by WSVN showcased the diver swimming towards the rescue boat, located approximately 600 yards offshore

Today, PADI has more than 7,200 diving products that span from certification courses, snorkeling, fun dives and more across the world.

Every year, about one million people go through the lengthy, detailed and technical process of planning a dive trip to get certified – from selecting the perfect dive site and haggling for dive packages to coordinating travel and no-fly times. The integration of diving products on Klook’s platform through API will help shorten a booking journey that could have taken days to just under 5 minutes. Consumers will be able to easily compare prices, check availability, read reviews, book and receive immediate confirmation – in a seamless way on one platform.

“Joining forces with Klook is set to simplify the journey to becoming a certified PADI Scuba Diver” says Manuel Kraemer, Vice President of Business Development for PADI Worldwide. “With 6,600 PADI Dive Centers and Resorts in 184 countries worldwide and with more than 7,200 products already bookable online on PADI.com, our collaboration is poised for an exciting expansion. As we progress, this extensive selection will become available for booking on Asia’s leading booking platform. Today, on Klook, you can seek adventure and save the ocean on nearly any holiday destination around the world”.

With a willingness to spend more on experiences, specifically nature and outdoor activities, young Asian travelers will want to make the most of their vacation and seek to include experiences like scuba diving into their plans. In 2023, China, Japan and Korea recorded the highest number of new PADI certified divers in Asia. In 2024,  the Asia Pacific diving tourism industry is set to not only fully recover but exceed the market size in 2019, and as demand continues to grow, the region’s revenue is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.2% from 2022 – 2030.

Chuan Sheng (C.S.) Soong, VP, Corporate Development, Klook said, “We’re excited to announce this strategic partnership with PADI, and to bring greater access with a seamless booking experience to the diving community. There is tremendous enthusiasm and dedication for diving across Asia Pacific and we want to bring more joy to this community with our platform. At Klook, we continue to expand our offerings to create more exciting, unique and holistic experiences for our customers. This presents the perfect opportunity to inspire a completely new segment of travelers to the captivating beauty of the underwater world.”

In line with PADI’s mission to explore and protect the underwater world and Klook’s goal to bring the world closer together, PADI and Klook are launching UNIVER-SEA-TY, a pilot program to inspire newcomers to dive and give them the ‘fins’ to explore the magical underwater world. To kick start the program, 33 lucky winners will be given a chance to earn an Open Water Diver certification with PADI in their dive location of choice.

When it comes to scuba diving, every piece of equipment plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe and enjoyable underwater experience. While divers often focus on high-tech gadgets and life-supporting gear, one humble component often goes unnoticed—the scuba mask strap. This seemingly simple accessory is, in fact, an unsung hero of the deep, providing comfort, security, and a better overall diving experience.

Comfort and Fit:

One of the primary reasons divers should pay attention to their scuba mask straps is comfort. Imagine exploring vibrant coral reefs or encountering mesmerizing marine life while constantly adjusting an uncomfortable strap—talk about a distraction! A well-fitted mask strap ensures that the mask stays snugly in place without causing unnecessary pressure or discomfort on the diver’s face. With the right strap, divers can focus on the breathtaking underwater world instead of readjusting their gear.

Security and Seal:

A secure seal is paramount for any scuba diver, and the mask strap plays a crucial role in maintaining this seal. A properly adjusted strap ensures that the mask stays in position, creating a watertight seal around the face. This not only prevents water from entering the mask but also helps in maintaining optimal buoyancy and reducing the risk of mask squeeze—a painful condition caused by pressure changes underwater.

Scuba Mask Straps

Customization and Style:

Scuba mask straps are not just functional; they also offer an opportunity for personalization and style. Divers can choose from a variety of materials, colors, and designs to match their preferences and personality. Customizing your mask strap not only adds a touch of individuality but also makes it easier to identify your gear in a sea of similar equipment.

Ease of Use and Quick Adjustments:

Modern scuba mask straps often come with user-friendly features that allow for quick and easy adjustments. Whether it’s a quick-release buckle or an adjustable strap with a simple pull mechanism, these innovations make it effortless for divers to fine-tune their mask fit underwater. The ability to make on-the-fly adjustments ensures a hassle-free dive, even in changing conditions.

Scuba Mask Straps

Preventing Hair Tangles:

For divers with longer hair, the struggle of dealing with tangled hair after a dive is all too familiar. A well-designed mask strap can help minimize this issue by keeping hair neatly in place. Some straps are specifically designed to prevent hair snags, allowing divers to resurface with their locks intact and tangle-free.

Conclusion:

While often overlooked, scuba mask straps are indispensable components of a diver’s gear. Their role in ensuring comfort, security, and customization cannot be overstated. Divers who invest time in selecting the right mask strap are likely to enjoy a more enjoyable and stress-free underwater experience. So, the next time you gear up for a dive, give your mask strap the attention it deserves—after all, it might just be the key to unlocking the wonders of the deep.

The depths of the Red Sea hold more mysteries than one might imagine. Among them lies the intriguing story of the “Russian Wreck,” a vessel with a mysterious past, buried beneath the waves. This shipwreck, also known as the Khanka, has captured the imagination of divers and maritime history enthusiasts. It’s a story that unfolds like a Cold War thriller, making it an ideal destination for adventurous scuba divers eager to explore both history and the deep blue sea.

A Spy Ship’s Hidden Past

Little is known about the Khanka, a Russian spy ship that ventured far from home. The ship was a modified 861-class survey/buoy tender, bearing the distinctive “SSV” designation, which identified it as a communications vessel. These ships were known for their roles in electronic signal intelligence gathering and surveillance during the height of the Cold War.

In those tense years, Russia relied on these unassuming commercial vessels to conduct covert operations, often retrofitting them to carry SIGINT and ELINT equipment, allowing them to discreetly collect intelligence from international waters. The Khanka, however, remains an enigma, with no official records confirming its existence within the MOMA class.

Cold War Russian ELINT History

The backdrop to this intriguing shipwreck is the early Cold War era, when Russia lacked an extensive network of overseas listening posts. To overcome this limitation, they employed commercial ships, particularly fishing trawlers, to conduct covert surveillance of foreign governments. These versatile vessels were affordable to operate and maintain and could be easily modified to carry hidden surveillance equipment.

As Russia evolved its “spy ships,” it began constructing purpose-built ELINT platforms, marking a significant development in the world of espionage and maritime history.

The Khanka’s Presence in the Red Sea

The Khanka’s final resting place is 24 meters below the surface in the western bay of Zabargad Island. Its presence in the southern Red Sea may seem perplexing at first, but it holds significant geopolitical relevance. In 1971, the Russians established a surveillance facility on Socotra Island, which provided access to strategic locations at the mouth of the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. This placement allowed them to monitor marine traffic, both commercial and military, entering and leaving the Red Sea, giving them a strategic upper hand during the Cold War.

Diving into History

The Khanka’s wreck is a fascinating destination for scuba divers. It lies in the clear waters of the Red Sea, and the mast just breaks the surface during low tide, providing an excellent reference point for divers. The ship seems to have collided head-on with the reef, causing the bow and forward hold to separate and rest on its port side. The rest of the ship remains upright, facing the reef.

Divers can explore the pilothouse and engine room, and for the adventurous, the ship’s holds may be accessible, offering a glimpse into the potential “spy” equipment that may have been onboard. The wreck still boasts many deck fittings, hatches, and some handrails, providing a vivid snapshot of the ship’s past.

However, divers should be prepared for the underwater currents that can affect visibility at the site. The excitement of discovering this historical relic is well worth the potential challenges.

The Red Sea’s “Russian Wreck” is not just a diving destination; it’s a portal into the covert world of Cold War espionage. As you explore its submerged remains, you can’t help but wonder about the secrets it carried and the stories it could tell if only its rusted hull could speak. The Khanka is a testament to the hidden history that still lies beneath the waves, waiting for intrepid explorers to uncover its mysteries.

NOAA and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) are guiding Mission: Iconic Reefs (M:IR) restoration partners with coral return protocols to help ensure the safe and efficient return of thousands of corals evacuated from their shallow in-water nurseries to land-based facilities this July. This summer’s historic marine heatwave prompted the emergency removal and massive collaboration between M:IR partners and multiple additional practitioners in order to safeguard the genetic diversity of Florida’s coral reef-building species.

The new protocols outline temperature markers, coral health check procedures, transportation methods, and monitoring requirements. Ocean temperatures at in-water nursery locations must be below 87˚F for at least seven days and must be cleared of all diseased or dead corals before evacuated corals can be returned. An official Coral Health Veterinarian will conduct on-site health checks and provide a 30-day reintroduction certification. Transport protocols ensure that holding containers do not exceed 87˚F, are shaded, offer appropriate space, and are inspected at the end of transport. Corals that show signs of distress, such as tissue loss or excessive mucus, will be quarantined on land.

Restoration partners Coral Restoration Foundation, Mote Marine Laboratory, and Reef Renewal began the return efforts in late-October, using the protocols to transport corals from temporary safekeeping at land-based facilities at Mote in Sarasota, Summerland, Islamorada, and Key Largo; Keys Marine Laboratory; FL SeaBase; The Reef Institute; Aquarium Encounters; and Plant a Million Corals. The corals will be closely monitored for disease, predation, and mortality for a 30-day minimum in order to reduce stressors they may encounter when they are later outplanted on the reef, help stave off disease outbreaks, and help prevent introduction of pathogens into the wild.

Assessment of coral health ongoing

In mid-August, NOAA’s M:IR Monitoring and Assessments Team conducted a 10-day assessment at segments of all seven iconic reef sites in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) to document the condition of the outplanted corals. At every location, the team observed fully bleached and recently dead corals. Most sites had pockets of corals that were only partially bleached, and in some cases, completely unbleached corals were observed. Boulder corals showed much less bleaching and minimal mortality, as compared to the branching elkhorn and staghorn corals. Approximately 30% of outplanted staghorn and 45% elkhorn coral surveyed died, most likely due to heat stress. Approximately 90% of elkhorn and staghorn corals surveyed exhibited signs of heat stress with bleaching, partial bleaching, or paling of the tissue.

The assessment results are preliminary due to eight additional weeks of high temperature stress that occurred after the survey was conducted, which may have further impacted coral bleaching and mortality. A follow-up cruise is planned for February 2024, and  data from both cruises will help NOAA biologists understand the full extent of the marine heatwave impacts and inform future Mission: Iconic Reefs restoration strategy. Outplant method, temperature trends, bleaching thresholds, site comparisons, and survival and mortality rates by age and outplant dates are variables that will be considered.

Corals that remained in the in-water nurseries and survived the heatwave will be considered for outplanting on a case-by-case basis under approval by FKNMS. Those corals will be outplanted to portions of M:IR sites where restoration efforts have not taken place;  their health and success will be tracked separately from pre-heatwave restoration areas.

Additional guidance will be provided for future outplanting and monitoring by NOAA/FWC officials, who continue to assess conditions of Florida’s Coral Reef after the unprecedented heat wave.

Ilha do Fogo, a 42-hectare island off the coast of Mozambique, has fully transitioned to 100% renewable energy.

The island is a safe haven for one of the world’s most vulnerable marine species… sea turtles. In order to protect Ilha do Fogo’s habitat, for all wildlife, the island’s directors vowed to keep the island as low-impact on the environment as possible.

Ilha do Fogo

Many islands are powered almost entirely by fossil fuels, however, the environmental impact of producing this type of energy went against everything the Fire Island Conservation team is working towards.

The NPO’s chief of operations, Jan van Deventer, states “Running Ilha do Fogo purely on solar energy just makes sense. We had already developed a number of solar stills to harvest fresh water on the island, so the transition to run all our energy needs on solar power was the logical next step.”

Ilha do Fogo

The 120KW solar plant was installed on Ilha do Fogo in November 2022. Although the island has accommodation for guests in the manner of ‘floating’ ensuite tents, it has only recently opened up to eco-tourism. With the solar system currently operating at a fairly low usage level, it is generating an average of 6000 kWh per month. This translates to a reduction of around 70,000 kg of CO2 annually. However, it can easily generate 13,000 kWh per month to accommodate our guests on the island, which equates to an annual reduction of 156,000 kg of CO2.

The project’s conservation manager, Esther Jacobs, states “The island is truly a biodiversity hotspot and we aim to do everything in our power to protect its marine and terrestrial populations. Running on diesel-power energy goes against our ethics. Not only would this type of energy create a huge carbon footprint just in transporting fuel to the island, but would also emit pollutants, including nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, and particulate matter, which can be harmful to the wildlife.”

Ilha do Fogo

Even the accommodation was carefully considered to minimise any environmental impact.  “There are 10 tented suites sitting atop platforms that were built to ensure the existing ecosystems and vegetation stayed intact,” says Jan. “With each tent sleeping two people, we could feasibly have 20 guests staying at any given time. However, we want to keep guest capacity to a maximum of 12, ensuring our impact remains at a minimum.”

Ilha do Fogo

Ilha do Fogo accommodation is part of Unfound Africa’s portfolio of unparalleled destinations and undiscovered locations. Each offering in the collection has been selected for uniqueness, inspiring guests to protect their biodiversity and culture. A percentage of the proceeds from all Unfound Africa bookings are donated to Fire Island Conservation projects.

An Underwater Adventure Like No Other

Antarctica, the frozen continent at the end of the world, is a land of extremes. It’s a place where ice and snow dominate the landscape, and the harsh climate tests the limits of human endurance. Yet, beneath the surface of its icy waters lies a hidden world of breathtaking beauty and mystery. Scuba diving in Antarctica offers intrepid adventurers a chance to explore this otherworldly realm, where glaciers meet the sea, and life thrives in the most unexpected places. In this article, we will delve into the unique and exhilarating experience of scuba diving in Antarctica.

A Frozen Wonderland Beneath the Waves

Antarctica’s marine environment is a world unto itself, with an abundance of marine life adapted to survive in frigid temperatures. The icy waters, filled with mesmerizing ice formations and crystal-clear visibility, create a surreal and enchanting underwater landscape. Scuba divers are treated to a symphony of colors, with vibrant marine life contrasting against the backdrop of the continent’s icy embrace.

Diving Hotspots

  1. Palmer Peninsula: Located on the northernmost part of the Antarctic Peninsula, the Palmer Peninsula is known for its diverse and unique marine life. Divers can explore kelp forests and observe penguins, seals, and various species of fish in their natural habitat. The peninsula also boasts impressive underwater cliffs and caves to explore.
  2. Deception Island: This volcanic island, shaped like a horseshoe, is one of the most popular diving destinations in Antarctica. Divers can explore the warm waters of its volcanic caldera, a stark contrast to the frigid surrounding seas. The island is also home to numerous shipwrecks from early explorations, offering a glimpse into the region’s history.
  3. Lemaire Channel: This narrow and stunning passage is a favorite for divers seeking to witness the grandeur of Antarctica’s icy landscapes. Diving here allows for close encounters with curious seals and a unique perspective on the icy cliffs rising on both sides of the channel.

Challenges and Preparations

Diving in Antarctica is not for the faint of heart. The extreme cold, unpredictable weather, and remote locations make it a challenging endeavor. Before embarking on an Antarctic diving expedition, divers must undergo specialized training and be well-prepared. Proper gear, including drysuits, undergarments, and thermal protection, is essential to withstand the bone-chilling temperatures.

Additionally, divers need to be in excellent physical condition to handle the physical demands of diving in these challenging conditions. Experienced dive operators, such as those based in South America or New Zealand, offer guided tours and expert support to ensure safety and success.

Environmental Conservation

Antarctica is a pristine and fragile environment, and diving here comes with a responsibility to protect it. Divers must adhere to strict guidelines to minimize their impact on the ecosystem. This includes respecting wildlife, avoiding contact with fragile marine life, and leaving no trace of their presence. Many diving operators promote sustainable practices and contribute to scientific research to help conserve Antarctica’s unique underwater ecosystems.

The Experience of a Lifetime

Scuba diving in Antarctica is an unparalleled adventure. It offers the chance to witness an untouched world of wonder, a world where ice and life coexist in a delicate balance. The opportunity to swim alongside seals, penguins, and even massive whales in the world’s coldest and most remote waters is an experience that few will ever forget.

If you’re an adventurous diver with a passion for exploration and a love for the natural world, then diving in Antarctica should be at the top of your bucket list. It’s an opportunity to be a part of a select group of explorers who have ventured into this pristine and enchanting underwater world, where the beauty of Antarctica’s frozen depths awaits those brave enough to take the plunge.

So, gear up, embrace the chill, and dive into the adventure of a lifetime – scuba diving in Antarctica, where you can experience the magic of a world frozen in time beneath the waves.

PADI Pros train with OceanShot partners for underwater coral reef panel at the Global Citizen Forum at COP28

PADI®. is joining OceanShot co-founders for the historic underwater panel on positive ocean change at the Global Citizen Forum, which is taking place alongside COP28 in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE December 6-7 2023. The first-of-its-kind underwater panel will dive deep on the importance for coral reef protection to elevate the urgent need for ocean action.

PADI’s CEO and President Drew Richardson will join Dr. Brosnan and Mr. DeJoria at the Global Citizen Forum’s first-ever underwater panel to purposefully descend beneath the surface in the hopes of calling people around the globe to positive ocean action and inspiring them to both explore and save the ocean.

OceanShot is a coral reef ecosystem restoration project co-founded by globally-recognized marine scientist and climate risk expert Dr. Deborah Brosnan, and global philanthropist, environmentalist and entrepreneur John Paul DeJoria, launched in partnership with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. The initiative uses technology that mimics the design and shape of natural reefs to restore coral and invite back marine life, as well as protect nearby coastal communities from storm surge and sea level rise.

Dr. Richardson is one of the most influential people in scuba diving and has transformed PADI’s mission to create a billion ocean TorchbearersTM.  who are taking local action for global impact and united by a shared vision to achieve balance between humanity and the ocean.

OceanShot’s first living-lab hub, designed to be a place where innovators can test their technologies aimed at environmental protection, was deployed in Antigua and Barbuda. In June 2021, the Global Citizen Forum adopted OceanShot as one of its supported flagship initiatives. This year, OceanShot’s co-founders invited PADI as a partner in its world-class restoration model.

“Coral reefs are among the most ecologically and economically valuable ecosystems that drive our blue economy,” says Dr. Richardson. “Scuba divers can not only explore beneath the surface and fuel ocean change as Torchbearers, taking part in a range of meaningful diver citizen-science actions driving real results. As global citizens, we have the opportunity to be  changemakers that inspire more innovative and positive solutions for the health of coral reefs, the ocean and our shared blue planet.”

“We’re doing this work because our oceans need us and we need them,” says Dr. Brosnan. “Humans have mapped the human genome, landed astronauts on the moon, and in less than twelve months developed a viable vaccine to combat a global pandemic. It is time to focus the same attention on our oceans with bold, ambitious, and achievable initiatives.”

PADI recently conducted a special underwater training session with Dr. Richardson, Dr. Brosnan and Mr. DeJoria in preparation for the upcoming underwater panel in December where they will share their knowledge and passion for ocean conservation with the world.

The Carnatic was as a 1,776 GRT steam-powered wood-on-iron constructed Clipper Ship built at Samuda Brothers, Cubitt Town, Isle of Dogs, Poplar, UK for the Penninsula & Orient S.N. Co., London (later to be known at the P & O Line). When her keel was laid in early 1862, she was originally to be named Mysore. However, when she was launched 12 June 1862 she was renamed the Carnatic. Completed 25 April 1863, she was 89.4 meters in length, 11.6 meters in beam, and 7.8 meters in draught. The ship was outfitted with square-rigged sails typical of clipper ships of the era, and also had a 4-cylinder compound inverted steam engine from Humphry’s and Tennant, London, which provided 2,442 Hp to a single shaft and a 3-blade propeller.

On 27 June 1863 she sailed for Calcutta where she assigned service on the Suez-Bombay- and China route. The Suez canal would not be completed until September 1869, so at that time Suez was a seaport where ship’s cargoes and passengers were embarked or were delivered too.

In 1867, Captain Philip Buton Jones took command of the ship, and by all accounts was considered a “seaman of the ablest means”.

At 1000 on the morning of 12 September 1869, the Carnatic departed Suez for Bombay with 34 passengers, 176 crew, and a cargo consisting of copper sheeting, bales of cotton, Royal Mail, and 40,000 GBP in specie which was destined for the mint in India.

As the ship headed south, Captain Jones remained on the bridge to personally oversee the ship’s navigation through the narrow passages and hazards of the Gulf of Suez. Maintaining a speed of 11 knots, the ship continued south throughout the day, with day turning to clear evening when the Ashrafi Light was sighted at 2340. However, no bearing on the light was taken. As the watch team changed at midnight, the Ashrafi Light was well astern of the ship. At 0100 13 September, the Second Officer became aware that Shadwan Island lie dead ahead. Captain Jones ordered a new course which he believed would allow the ship to clear the Island. However, at 0118 waves were sighted off the starboard bow indicating a reef. The helm was put hard over to starboard and engines to full back, but to no avail…..

The ship hit the reef of Sha’ab Abu Nuhas and was hard aground. Captain Jones then conducted a thorough inspection of the ship and determined that the pumps could handle the water that the ship was taking on. As there was no apparent danger to the passengers or crew he ordered that everyone was to remain onboard.

At dawn, Captain Jones realized that the ship was hard aground and ordered some of the cargo of cotton bales thrown overboard to lighten the ship in an attempt to refloat her on the changing tide. This, however, proved unsuccessful. Some passengers requested to disembark and make for Shadwan Island, a request which Capt. Jones refused as he was expecting the S.S. Sumatra to pass near the Carnatic’s position, inbound for Suez, in the near future. And although the ship was taking on water, the pumps were controlling the flooding, the ship had power and appeared to still be sound.

As the day wore on there was no sign of any passing ships, so Capt. Jones decided that all passengers and crew would spend another night onboard the ship, although some passengers again requested to disembark for Shadwan Island.

As the ship sat on the reef, it had been swinging from side-to-side with the waves, which unbeknownst to captain or crew, was slowly weakening the ship’s keel. At 0200 on 14 September the water level in the engine room reached the ship’s boilers which resulted in the ship losing all power (and loss of the pumps as well!).

At daybreak, with the ship flooding uncontrollably, Capt. Jones gave the order to abandon ship with women and children being ordered the first to depart the ship. The first of the women and children had just been put into a lifeboat when the ship suddenly broke in half. The after section of the ship immediately went to the bottom resulting in the loss of 5 of the passengers and 26 crew. The forward section of the ship rolled over onto its port side taking the remainder of the passengers and crew with it.

The passengers and crew in the water struggled for their lives and many managed to make it to the top of the reef.

The survivors managed to make it to Shadwan Island in the remaining lifeboats, arriving on the island at sunset. A signal fire was started atop the island which was later sighted by the passing S.S. Sumatra who rescued the survivors. 31 people lost their lives in the sinking of the ship.

Captain Jones was ordered to England to stand before a formal Board of Enquiry where it was determined that the grounding of the Carnatic was the result of negligence on the captain’s part. Captain Jones’ Master ticket was suspended for nine months. However, Captain Jones never went to sea again…..

The Carnatic’s cargo was salvaged in the weeks following the sinking where 40,000 GBP of cargo and specie were recovered.

Diving Information

The Carnatic lies at the base, and parallel to, the Sha’ab Abu Nuhas reef at a depth of 18-27 meters. When the ship sank, she had broken into two sections. When the ship settled on the bottom, the two halves settled nearly back together! The wreck is lying on its port side with the bow of the ship is pointing to the east and stern pointing to the west. The fore and aft sections are nearly complete, separated by the section of the ship where it broke in two. The wooden deck and hull have long since deteriorated and disappeared, leaving only the iron structural ribs and frames. This makes for an easy penetration into the ship down to what was the second deck. At the bow one can see where the bowsprit and figurehead were once mounted. At the stern, window ports still remain and one can penetrate the ship down two deck levels. Beneath the stern lies the rudder and the three-bladed propeller which make for some beautiful pictures! The entire wreck is populated with soft corals, glass fish, crocodile fish, lion fish, and the occasional blue-spotted stingray. Diving the wreck can pretty much only be done in good weather and by being dropped off by Zodiac. A very nice dive adventure!

A swimming area in Florida has been temporarily closed following two incidents where individuals were bitten on the head by an alligator, as reported by a local news outlet.

A professional trapper, who spoke to WCJB, successfully captured a nine-foot alligator from the waters of the Alexander Springs Recreation Area located within the Ocala National Forest this past Sunday.

Both of the bite victims were scuba divers, with one being attacked on Wednesday and the other on Sunday. The area had previously experienced a temporary closure on Wednesday but was subsequently reopened. However, in response to the recent alligator-related incidents, it has now been closed again “until further notice,” according to WCJB.

The U.S. Forest Service announced the necessity for this temporary closure on Wednesday, emphasizing that it was a measure taken for public safety. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission promptly conducted an investigation and responded to the situation.

A scuba dive boat captain has been found guilty of criminal negligence in the deaths of 34 people who lost their lives in a tragic fire aboard the vessel in 2019, marking the deadliest maritime disaster in recent U.S. history. Jerry Boylan, the captain of the Conception, was charged with one count of misconduct or neglect of a ship officer, a statute intended to hold those responsible for maritime disasters, and he now faces the possibility of spending up to 10 years in prison.

The verdict, delivered by a federal jury, brings some closure to the grieving families who have eagerly awaited accountability for their loved ones’ deaths. Outside the courtroom, tears and embraces from relatives of the victims expressed their relief that justice had been served. This guilty verdict comes more than four years after the tragedy.

The Conception was anchored near Santa Cruz Island when the fire broke out. Thirty-three passengers and one crew member were trapped in a bunkroom below deck and did not survive. Boylan, along with four crew members, managed to escape by jumping overboard. The cause of the blaze still remains unknown, but the trial saw both the prosecution and defense exchange blame for the tragedy.

Prosecutors argued that Boylan failed to fulfill his responsibilities as captain and neglected crucial safety measures, such as not posting a roving night watch or adequately training his crew in firefighting. Boylan’s defense focused on placing blame on boat owner Glen Fritzler, accusing him of fostering a lax safety culture and failing to provide proper training.

While the exact cause of the fire may never be determined, the guilty verdict serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of maritime safety protocols and the accountability that accompanies the responsibility of being a ship officer. The legacy of the victims who lost their lives on that fateful day will endure in the reforms and changes brought forth by their tragic loss.

Boylan’s sentencing is scheduled for February 8, and he could face up to 10 years in prison. He was the only person criminally charged in relation to the fire. Following the tragedy, there have been notable changes to maritime regulations, efforts for congressional reform, and civil lawsuits seeking justice for the victims and their families. This incident will forever be etched in history as the deadliest maritime disaster in recent U.S. history.

The narrative of the ships, which is a crucial aspect of the Halifax Explosion, is largely missing from the many excellent books that have been written about it. That day, there were far more than 150 boats in the harbour. We have very little knowledge of them. The enormous task of identifying and narrating the histories of the ships and the sailors who manned them is taken on by The Dangerous Harbour: Revealing the Unknown Ships and Wrecks of the Halifax Explosion.

Read The Scuba News Canada article on Atlantic’s Last Stop Courage, Folly, and Lies in the White Star Line’s Worst Disaster Before Titanic

This is Bob Chaulk’s sixth book about the seas and sailors of Eastern Canada, drawing from more than 1,200 dives in Halifax Harbour. The author of Atlantic’s Last Stop: Courage, Folly, and Lies in the White Star Line’s Worst Disaster Before the Titanic, Bob is a well-known writer and speaker on nautical history. He recently came back from Liverpool, United Kingdom, where he told the tale of Nova Scotia’s worst shipwreck in the port where the Atlantic sailed.

About the Author Robert B Chaulk

Robert G. Chaulk is the SS Atlantic Heritage Park’s historian and a recognized expert on the SS Atlantic accident. He is the author of five volumes about the maritime history of Atlantic Canada. He co-authored SS Atlantic: The White Star Line’s First Disaster at Sea, which received three literary honours, with Greg Cochkanoff. Bob is an ardent scuba diver who has done over fifty dives on the Atlantic wreck, giving him a unique viewpoint on this significant piece of Canadian history.

Every year this annual event commemorates the sinking of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald and the total loss of the 29 crew members aboard on November 10, 1975. It is also a time to reflect on the memory of all lives lost on the Great Lakes.

The lighthouse, fog signal building, and visitor center will be open for visitors. Guides will welcome visitors and provide historic site and shipwreck information. Throughout the day, visitors can watch a film about Edmund Fitzgerald in the visitor center, or join a guided tour exploring the history of Fitzgerald’s final voyage.

At 4:15 pm, the lighthouse will temporarily close while the names of the crew are read to the tolling of a ship’s bell, with a rendition of the Naval Hymn. Following the ceremony, the beacon will be lit, and the tower will be open again to tour until close at 6 pm.

Be sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp as the grounds and trails are unlit. The weather is unpredictable, please dress accordingly.

The event will be streamed on Split Rock’s Facebook Page and the Minnesota Historical Society’s YouTube channel.

A sad day for underwater filming projects as The Underwater Studio in Essex, known for its TV and movie filming stages, has recently closed its doors. Operating under the name SWS Marine Services, the company cited insurmountable challenges as the reason for its closure.

In an official statement replacing its website, the Underwater Studio explained that it struggled to recover from the business loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, soaring energy costs, a writers’ and actors’ strike in the United States, and a subsequent decline in bookings contributed to its financial woes. The studio now faces expenses that surpass its income, leading to this unfortunate decision.

The Underwater Studio, founded in Basildon’s Burnt Mills industrial estate in the late 1990s by diver Fred Woodcock and the late Geoff Smith, was a notable institution in the British film and TV industry. Both Woodcock and Smith had extensive experience in the industry, having worked on well-known franchises like James Bond and Jason Bourne. Woodcock remained involved as the diving supervisor, with Glenn Whatley serving as the studio administrator.

Diver Down

One diver, after a seemingly brief period below the surface, discovers that his gas supply has run perilously low. Another, paralyzed, bobs helplessly on the surface, and when a poorly trained divemaster attempts rescue, things go from bad to worse. Two other divers, fascinated by the bountiful undersea life of the Caribbean, fail to notice that a powerful current is sweeping them rapidly away from their unattended boat.

These are just a few of the true stories you will find in Diver Down, most of them involving diver error and resulting in serious injury or death. Each of these tales is accompanied by an in-depth analysis of what went wrong and how you can recognize, avoid, and respond to similar underwater calamities. This unique survival guide explores the gamut of diving situations, including cave and wreck diving, deep-water dives, river and drift diving, decompression sickness, and much more. It shows you how to prevent tragic mishaps through:

  • Inspection and maintenance of primary and secondary diving gear
  • Learning and following established safety protocols
  • Confirming the training and credentials of diving professionals
  • Practicing emergency responses under real-world conditions
