Organizer Stefan Panis is a diver at heart and soul! From the age of 6, he embarked on his first dive alongside his father, and since then, he has undertaken numerous dives, developing a strong passion for technical diving, wreck diving, cave diving, and mine diving.

After leading the way at the Tekdive Shows in Antwerp for years, Stefan felt it was time to branch out and spread his own wings in 2019. This led to the creation of “Tec-Expo,” an innovative fair supported by a passionate and youthful team brimming with fresh ideas. Their aim was to organize an exceptional and affordable fair that would feature high-quality lectures, workshops, and a stunning exhibition space. The one-day trial event was a tremendous success, and throughout the entire process, they actively listened to the exhibitors, visitors, and speakers, taking their feedback to heart.

The feedback received indicated that “Start To Tec” had a vibrant presence and there was substantial interest among novice (recreational) divers in swimming techniques, buoyancy control, and materials. However, a majority of those surveyed expressed concerns about the perceived high threshold to attend a “Tec” exhibition. Therefore, the team made a deliberate choice to rebrand the event as “DiveXpo,” aiming to address this issue directly.

Water sports fair heads for its 55th edition

With a successful restart in their luggage, the Düsseldorf trade fair organizers are setting off in preparation for the 55th edition of the successful water sports fair boot Düsseldorf.

Exhibitor registrations for the upcoming boot from 20 to 28 January 2024 started on Tuesday, 9 May 2023. Interested manufacturers of sailing and motor yachts, canoes, houseboats, surfboards and diving equipment, dealers, associations, destinations and tourism providers can register directly online under the link http://www.boot.de/2330.

“boot is passion!” is how Wolfram Diener, CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, describes the world’s most important event for the entire water sports industry and adds: “We put our heart and soul into our exhibitors. This year’s boot has shown that it is the constant engine of the industry and drives the entire international market.”

The figures for boot Düsseldorf 2023 speak for themselves: around 237,000 people were inspired by the comprehensive range of products and services on offer at the show and many acted on their purchase intentions directly in the 16 halls. 77,500 boot fans travelled to Düsseldorf from abroad over the nine days of the show. The almost 1,500 exhibitors, 64 percent of whom were not from Germany, came from 68 countries. The media coverage around boot 2023 and 1,861 accredited journalists ensured almost 1 billion media contacts. “This makes boot a real media giant and truly unique in the whole world,” explains Petros Michelidakis, Director boot Düsseldorf.

No sooner had the emails to exhibitors and potential interested parties been sent out on 9 May than the first registrations for boot 2024 were received by the team. “The manufacturers are keen to secure a good stand for boot 2024”, says Arne von Heimendahl (HeimendahlA@Messe-Duesseldorf.de), Senior Project Manager for sailing and motor boats in the team. Lena Beckmann (BeckmannL@Messe-Duesseldorf.de), as Senior Project Manager, is in charge of equipment and accessories, diving, tourism, charter and houseboats: “Many companies and destinations that we didn’t have on board in 2023 visited us at the fair and have already expressed their interest in participating next year in January.” Her colleague Caroline Mühl (MuehlC@Messe-Dusseldorf.de), who as Senior Manager is the team’s contact person for surfing, canoeing and kayaking as well as maritime art, is delighted: “From this year, boot is the main sponsor of the surf festival on the German Island Fehmarn and is a great partner in the top European event for surfers. This will further strengthen the presentation of surfing at boot. In addition, we are active in the promotional tour ‘Paddling is Fun’ for canoeing and SUP sports.” The well-known partnerships with the regattas in Kiel and Travemünde, the North Sea Week and the “Rund Um” on Lake Constance confirm the fair’s long-standing ties with sailing.

Petros Michelidakis emphasizes the plus points of participating in boot: “Our visitors are professionals, whether experts or hobby sportsmen. 70 percent have a sailing, motorboat or diving licence. 92 percent are very satisfied with their visit to the fair. And 94 percent would recommend a visit to boot to others.” There is also great satisfaction on the exhibitor side. For example, 85 per cent of the companies state that they were able to acquire new customers and 75 per cent report numerous direct sales at the fair. Michelidakis: “Participating in boot 2024 is a worthwhile, sales-promoting and thus very promising marketing measure that will certainly have a positive impact on the start of the 2024 water sports season. We are very much looking forward to our small – 55th – anniversary next year.”

The SCUBA DIVING SHOW BRASIL, now in its fifth edition, has proved to be a unique event in Brazil for being an event that brings together the four main modalities of the sport such as: recreational, technical, free diving and public safety diving.

The name DRT stands for Diving, Resort, and Travel. DRT SHOW was founded by Mr. Jason Chong in 2009 to provide business partners greater support and encourage more people to become passionate divers who care about marine ecology. In 2010, the first DRT SHOW was held successfully in Hong Kong. 90% of exhibitors were from overseas, which proved that DRT SHOW had become the most international dive exhibition in Asia Pacific. Since then, DRT SHOW has been taking place in several Asian cities including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Okinawa, Taipei, Singapore, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, and Mumbai. Nowadays, DRT SHOW is truly the largest dive expo in Asia Pacific.

At boot 2023 everything on the stage of the blue innovation dock (bid) will revolve around sustainable and forward-looking concepts for watersports. What goals does the bid pursue, who is it addressed to? Marcus Krall interviewed Petros Michelidakis, Director of boot Düsseldorf, about this world premiere.

August already saw a virtual preview premiere of the bid as a live stream, now it will be going on stage for nine days. What can we expect from the bid?

We had this idea for quite some time already but could unfortunately not put it into practice because of the pandemic. The blue innovation dock is designed to intensify dialogue between the sector and policymakers. With our bid we want to flag up the relevance of the watersports industry and encourage a legal framework that allows the industry to grow. The content partner for the bid is the European Boating Industry (EBI) association headquartered in Brussels.

Raising awareness as a primary goal

Amongst other things, of course. Now is the time to chart the course for the future. Our virtual premiere in August already resulted in the EU developing a watersports roadmap that will be presented at boot for the first time. I am, indeed, a little proud of that.

What role does boot play in the bid?

We are the world’s largest watersports trade fair and are therefore very suitable as a platform. We have both B2C and B2B visitors and all major boatbuilders/shipyards are here. This is why boot is predestined for intensifying dialogue. While not pioneers in this field we are ideally suited to bringing together the greatest number of key stakeholders.

Which topics will be on the table?

The whole cross-section of topics will be addressed. Do e-fuels make sense? How well suited is hydrogen as a fuel? How can marinas be digitalised faster? Can we involve water sportspeople to protect endangered regions? How will we be boating in 30 years from now? To table the right topics and at the same time gain an insight into opinions we initiated a study; in cooperation with ADAC we polled 1,500 boating enthusiasts plus members of our boot Club. This means, the bid is very close to the market – which is why I hope politicians and other decision-makers will be following it attentively.

Even today 100 exhibitors will be presenting sustainable propulsion solutions at boot 2023.

In Halls 13 and 14 boot will be dedicated to the “Destination Seaside”. This coastal tourism is currently on everyone’s lips. Will it also be integrated into the bid?

The coastal tourism theme is, in fact, highly topical and relevant. This tourism in the immediate vicinity of the seaside and up to 11 km inland, generates EUR 240 billion in Europe every year. Of this amount the watersports industry generates between 11% and 12%, i.e. EUR 25 m to 30 m. This survey was carried out by us in cooperation with the European Tourism Board.

A small aside on this: boats only contribute as little as 0.1% to the entire C02-emissions in the EU; what we are talking about here are 6.5 million boats up to 24 m LOA, which are registered in the EU. Their average operating hours per year: 35 to 50.

To me those levels sound relatively good in terms of emissions.

For sure. As an industry, however, we probably also have to go that extra mile once in a while because we are in the public eye, especially when it comes to larger yachts. I see them as part of coastal tourism and like to compare them to hotels – they are used for living, eating and enjoying entertainment. And: how many yachts are berthed in marinas that serve as a residence? In Greece, for example, this is very popular.

Meaning – this is also about societal change?

Absolutely. Let’s have a look at how we will most probably be living in future. We will have a 4-day working week. Young people will select the employers who can offer this; and the boating industry is also fighting for this day.

We have to remember how the boats and yachts are used here. We have to become far more digital and invest while the market situation is good. We have also created the bid for this, for inspirations in this regard.

Is there a willingness to change at all?

I understand from the response to the bid that the interest from the industry is very high. What’s more, the numbers speak for themselves. We are a market worth billions that can probably still be expanded if society changes the way many experts forecast. As a boatbuilder/shipyard I could think about how I could participate in that market even better with my product. This, however, will probably mean looking at use rather than design or propulsion.

Can visitors of boot attend the bid without any registration?

Yes, definitely. They can simply take a seat, listen and be inspired. We will make some 40 to 50 seats available and have already enlisted 60 speakers and panellists who will appear on stage. Right on the first day there will be a session involving policy makers and business so the initial course can be charted. The daily updated programme can be found on our website and will additionally be featured on boot’s social media channels.

What would be the ideal case after nine days of blue innovation dock?

That the information we have conveyed about our sector to political decision-makers was sufficient to speed up developments in terms of sustainability. Although our watersports only account for 0.1% of EU-wide emissions, it is important that we contribute to keeping our destinations clean and making them cleaner.

It would be fantastic if we could create a framework that is cross-sectoral and EU-wide. Why do Spaniards and Germans protect seaweed in their respective ways and Greeks – and you know, I am Greek – not at all? We have to enter into dialogue. It is not about who is right but about conserving our destinations for generations to come.

What do you tell young people who are concerned about this very topic?

That the water sports industry in particular is dependent on a clean climate and waters. As a networking platform, boot will continue to raise awareness among society, young and old alike. Above all, we will promote dialogue with decision-makers in politics to ensure the necessary transformation and create the appropriate framework conditions.

Will NGOs also have a say?

Needless to say. All NGOs that are represented at boot – such as WWF, Greenpeace, NABU or Deutsche Meeresstiftung – are, of course, called upon, to get involved and join the discussion. 28th January has been scheduled for this.

What discussions are you most likely to be attending?

I would very much like to participate on the first day when politicians will discuss with shipyard representatives. I hope I will make it. Quite prominent guests have announced their participation. Furthermore, each day of the bid is an innovation driver for the industry, which is why I will try to follow all subjects addressed.

Let’s talk about the trade fair itself. After two cancelled editions – will boot return to its old strength and size?

We are very satisfied with bookings received so far, which are on par with 2019, and will present watersports in their entirety on a huge exhibition area measuring 31 football pitches in total.

How many exhibitors will there be exactly?

We expect around 1,500 exhibitors – a fantastic number in the history of boot. Unfortunately, many small family-run businesses in the diving segment have not survived the Covid crisis – so we are missing these exhibitors. Just like the direct sales operations that have completely gone online. Nevertheless, there is no other trade fair in the world with such extended ranges and, what’s more, in such an international setting.

Incidentally, the first admission ticket was sold to Iceland. This visitor will travel to boot because he offers whale watching and intends to gradually renew his fleet.

Can you share three highlights with me you are looking forward to?

It is always difficult to pick some brands because they are all near and dear to my heart. The biggest yachts will come from Sunseeker and Sanlorenzo, both being 30 m LOA. In Hall 17 we will be showcasing – with celebrity support – wing surfing and wing foiling on a 60 m long pool and in Hall 12 the new diving tower will be inaugurated. This is also where the opening of boot will take place.

I would like to briefly come back to Halls 13 and 14, which you already mentioned. These seem to be halls that also target visitors who do not own boats?

Exactly. The Destination Seaside halls are designed to reflect the versatility of holidays by the sea; they focus on activities and regions – coastal tourism here will be represented by the Lübecker Bucht, Portugal and Croatia as exhibitors. In future, these will probably be very important halls to win over new watersports enthusiasts.

To conclude: will Covid still be an issue at boot?

boot will be held under completely normal conditions, the way we know and love. We have installed 3,000 Hepa filters in the exhibition halls to filter 99.99% of all viruses out of the air. So the indoor air is constantly purified. This allows us to supply less fresh air and reduce energy consumption.

The ocean tribute Award 2023 enters into its final round. Now, the public is invited to vote for their favoured maritime protection projects. The jury of the Award, which has been presented since 2017 by boot Düsseldorf in cooperation with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the German Maritime Foundation, has shortlisted five projects from all submissions that deserve special support. At www.oceantribute.de all interested parties can now cast their vote. On 23 January 2023 the winning project will be announced and presented on the occasion of boot Düsseldorf’s blue motion night. The Award comes with prize money of EUR 20,000.

Nominees include the following five projects in alphabetical order:

Clean Sea Pod’s project aims to instal a proper litter bin on the ocean. The goal is to set a new standard for the recovery and disposal of ghost nets. To this end Clean Sea Pod uses a technology that can be implemented on all sea-going yachts – without increasing their carbon footprint. This is what distinguishes this project from all previous attempts. The project cooperates with different universities and research institutes in Canada and the USA. If Clean Sea Pod wins it will finance current tests also on the world’s biggest ocean, the Pacifichttps://www.oceaninnovation.group/

enteron® founder Thomas Logisch had the idea to develop a new, completely organic technology for on-board waste-water treatment and to return the clean water to stagnant and flowing waters. The first prototype was developed, built and tested with students from the Beuth University of Technology in Berlin. It is the smallest certified waste-water treatment plant for house boats, sailing yachts and powerboats, but also for larger caravans or expedition vehicles. Enteron® purifies wastewater directly on board. The technology ensures that only clean, clear water is discharged into the environment and it complies with the waste-water threshold limits certified by IMO/MARPOL and MEPC. If Enteron® wins, it will apply for US Coast-Guard certification. https://tomlogisch.com/enteron/

Innovation Yachts has constructed and manufactured the world’s first completely recyclable and sustainable catamaran from composite material in series production. The IY LBV35 is the first model in a new series of boats propelled by solar energy & hydrogenator. Furthermore, the manufacturer guarantees the buyer to buy back all construction materials (volcanic fibre, FSC-balsa wood & organic epoxy resin) in case of damage or at the end of the boat’s useful life because these are recycled in house. The IY LBV35 is the perfect day charter boat and has an “ocean cleaning system” as a special feature, meaning it can lower its forward trampoline to collect floating garbage while sailing. If Innovation Yachts wins the company wants to invest even more money in the re-use of waste/residual material as new building materials. https://innovation-yachts.com/de/yachten/iy-lbv35/

Nemo PI developed the first open-source underwater weather station that collects various chemical and physical data on ocean pollution and analyses it in the Cloud. This data will be publicly available. Save Nemo has combined this smart hardware and software with moorings to stop wild anchoring in reefs. This effectively counteracts the precarious side effects of mass tourism. If Nemo PI wins the prize money will go 100% to our non-profit charity organization Save.Nemo e.V. https://save-nemo.org/

Fregatta Space is a technology-based start-up that has developed an Earth Observation Platform. It automatically allows detecting air and water pollution anywhere in the world. This is done by applying proprietary machine learning algorithms based on multi-spectral and hyper-spectral images generated by various sources such as satellites, drones, aircraft or cameras. This state-of-the-art technology and satellite capacities as well as machine learning can help to clean and conserve the earth. Fregatta Space already concluded agreements with institutions all over the world. These include the Philippe Cousteau Foundation, INVEMAR and the Ecomar Foundation, to name but a few. If they win they will use the prize money to develop new algorithms to survey and protect the oceans. https://fregataspace.com/

TravelXpo is a huge new concept from Compass Fairs which aims to unite the travel and tourism industry in Norway and the rest of the world under a single roof.

The public fair will take place at the Telenor Arena just outside Oslo. In the future, we plan to take the concept out to other cities across Norway and Scandinavia.

TravelXpo will be a travel and experience event where those who dream about travelling and enjoying new experiences in Norway and the wider world will be able to find inspiration and information. Over the course of three days, the Telenor Arena will be filled with thousands of interested visitors in full purchasing mode. The event will be an important gathering place for the travel industry – a place where exhibitors can expand their networks and meet both new and existing customers alike.

Participation at the event will also provide the perfect opportunity to promote and launch new destinations and experiences.

Artisan & Ocean Korea, leading the digitalization of global water sports announced that it will participate in the DEMA Show to be held in Orlando, USA for four days from November 1 to 4, 2022.

Artisan & Ocean, with its vision of ‘letting more people experience the beauty of the ocean through diving’, manufactures diving gear using smartphones to lower the cost burden of diving equipment and lower the barrier to entry for diving. The core future technologies, research on underwater camera development and underwater communication-related technologies are currently under R&D.

The Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) show, launched in Florida in 1977, is the world’s largest B2B dedicated exhibition for scuba diving, marine water sports, and adventure/diving travel industry companies. Hundreds of diving and travel industry experts have participated.

This will be the first off-line launch of ‘Universal Light’, recently launched on Kickstarter in about two years since the release of DIVEROID Universal Pro&mini White in 2020. Also, through this exhibition, they plan to use this as an opportunity to establish strategies for differentiation by understanding the products and technologies of the major competitors.

The main goals of attending the exhibition are to establish cooperative networking with several major diving shops in various countries and actively promote future technologies of the upcoming products.

Artisan & Ocean has experience not only in D2C sales but also in crowdfunding such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo and is solidifying its position in the global diving industry through B2B sales of domestic and overseas distributors and resellers.

During the exhibition period in the booth #713, the new Universal Lite and Pro-controller products with future core technologies to be released will be displayed and sold along with the current flagship product Universal Pro&mini at Artisan & Ocean’s booth. A potential B2B partnership consultation table will also be actively operated.

Wonny Kwak, the lead marketer of Artisan & Ocean officially said, “Through participating in this exhibition, we will do our best to expand our overseas market share by launching new products and establishing networks with major overseas diving shops.” We will continue to work hard to promote the next generation of technology.”

What do you get when you have Drs Alessandro Marroni, Óscar Camacho and Simon Mitchell in the same room?

Undoubtedly an incredible amount of knowledge in research, diving physiology and hyperbaric medicine. If you are a Diver, you know the value of such a debate.

If there are topics that serious divers are really concerned about, we are sure they will be addressed in this debate. The Panel has enough time to discuss many important related issues, and we count on the attendees’ participation to make it even more interesting.

PADI, SDI and SSI in the same room, discussing the future of teaching in diving.

Diving Talks 2022

Imagine having PADI, SDI and SSI in the same room to discuss the future of teaching in diving. This would be an exciting debate, wouldn’t it? Knowing the divers representing these organizations in this debate – Jean-Claude Monachon, Mark Caney and Mark Powell – there’s no doubt it will be an incredible event.

Jean-Claude Monachon joined SSI after climbing the stairs of a prominent diving organization and being a CEO for over 20 years, where he continued to dedicate his passion to helping SSI – Scuba Schools International to change the approach and move completely to a digital version of the programs, which certainly helped to change the approach of the diving education. Mark Caney is the President of the European Underwater Federation, is President of the Rebreather Training Council and continues to serve in senior positions in leading diving industry bodies such as the World Recreational Scuba Training Council. He is also the chairman of PADI AWARE Foundation for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Mark is a TDI Instructor Trainer and a member of TDI’s Global Training Advisor Panel. He is a regular contributor to a number of diving magazines and a regular speaker at Diving conferences around the world. Mark represents TDI on the British Diving Safety Group and the HSE Recreational Diving Industry Committee, as well as being a member of the Diver Training and Breathing Apparatus committees at the British Standards Institute.

Diving Talks 2022 - The Talks

What do you expect to see in a Bill Stone presentation?

Wouldn’t you like to discuss with Thomas Stachura, Leigh Bishop or Armando Ribeiro their findings underwater in the expeditions that led to the discovery and identification of new shipwrecks?

The Exhibition: brands and trials

Diving Talks 2022 - Brands

It’s about talking with who knows and testing that piece of equipment even underwater if you want!

Friday, October 7, is BRANDS DAY. Try dive the Mares SCR Horizon, test your preferred scooter, and more. Bring shorts or a swimming suit. This is happening in the swimming pool. Join us on October 7. Diving Talks is also Brands Day!

DIVING talks is a family / partner friend event.

You don’t need to leave your family or partner behind. The DIVING talks gives your loved one’s the reasons for them wanting to come.

If you want to attend, transform this trip into a partner or family trip to Portugal. There are many things they can do while you enjoy the Talks.

It is not that you need to have something planned. The peninsula is such a fantastic site to enjoy; there’s the beach if you want to relax by the sea, there are trails you can check out, or you can relax by the pool.

If you have free time and want to explore Portugal underwater, DIVING talks can be the pretext for a ‘stay and dive’ side-program.

Diving talks partnered with Portugal Dive, a boutique dive concierge that organizes dive trips to Portugal; the mainland and in the Azores and Madeira archipelagos.

Diving recreational or technical, you can expect the European Atlantic most transparent waters full of life, schools of fish, the big pelagic, and even monk seals: all that and wrecks, inland caves, you name it.

Opt to arrive one-week earlier or leave one-week later, and chose the stay and dive program for your type of diving and preferences.

Boston Sea Rovers, the longest-running dive show in the world, is hosting their 68th show this October. Their multi-day event attracts hundreds of local and national divers as it features the world’s leading divers, underwater photographers, and scientists that come together with incredible displays of adventures to share awe-inspiring stories that both educate and influence the diving community. The Boston Sea Rovers Clinic & Expo has four main components: a showroom floor, a workshop series, a presentation series, and a film festival where divers will learn of the latest expeditions and innovations in underwater exploration

Boston Sea Rovers

The showroom floor has specially curated exhibitors that showcase an outstanding comradery amongst the diving community. Divers will explore displays of dive travel agencies, equipment companies, dive shops, dive clubs, accessories and apparel. The showroom floor also features a silent auction that holds dozens of highly sought-after items such as gear, photography, charters and trips. Divers will be able to conveniently visit the floor in between both the workshop series and the presentation series.

The workshops series is designed to provide divers with an opportunity to increase knowledge and competencies in small group settings with experts in the field. There is a well-rounded offering of topics that include everything from underwater photography, hands-on regulator service and an introduction to rebreather diving. Simultaneously, there will be three rooms full of divers attending the daytime presentation series. The series aims to educate divers about topics in the underwater world through educators, explorers, scientists, and divers. To top off the show, there is a Film Festival Saturday evening that features underwater filmmakers who will showcase never-before-seen footage. In past shows we have seen presenters give sneak peaks of what’s to come on channels such as National Geographic and BBC.

Boston Sea Rovers

When you leave the event, it will be no surprise why it’s the most prestigious dive show in the world. Join the Boston Sea Rovers this October 1st – October 2nd for their 68th world-renowned event.

“Ocean Tribute” Award Five Years on Successful Course for the Seas https://www.thescubanews.com/2022/06/13/ocean-tribute-award-five-years-on-successful-course-for-the-seas/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ocean-tribute-award-five-years-on-successful-course-for-the-seas https://www.thescubanews.com/2022/06/13/ocean-tribute-award-five-years-on-successful-course-for-the-seas/#respond Mon, 13 Jun 2022 12:17:12 +0000 https://www.thescubanews.com/?p=24904 With the initiation of the “ocean tribute” award in 2017, the Monegasque Prince Albert II Foundation, the German Ocean Foundation and boot Düsseldorf set themselves a clear goal: To support [...]]]>

With the initiation of the “ocean tribute” award in 2017, the Monegasque Prince Albert II Foundation, the German Ocean Foundation and boot Düsseldorf set themselves a clear goal: To support people, projects or initiatives in their commitment to marine conservation. Since 2018, the €20,000 prize has been awarded annually. Prominent award winners such as Hamburg sailor and Vendée Globe participant Boris Herrmann, with his team Malizia winner 2019, give the award considerable international significance.

The call for entries for the “ocean tribute” Award 2023 has just started and interested projects can register now at https://oceantributeaward.boot.de/en/Apply_now. Applications are invited for initiatives that develop innovative and future-oriented technologies to protect and conserve the oceans, contribute to reducing waste and thus ensure cleaner seas, or promote sustainable management to protect marine and coastal ecosystems. Applications should be submitted to the website with a detailed description no later than August 31, 2022.

The jury of experts from science and research as well as representatives of the foundations and boot Düsseldorf will then evaluate the entries and select five particularly committed projects. The jury places particular emphasis on the practical effectiveness of the project, the involvement of as many people as possible in the initiative, and networking with other marine activists. The five nominees for the final round will be presented on the “ocean tribute” award website and on the boot social media channels from October. The interested public can now vote for their favorite in a “public voting”.

boot Director Petros Michelidakis explains: “The winner of the ‘ocean tribute’ Award 2023 will be the one who gathers the most votes from the public voting and the expert jury and will not only receive an attractive prize money, but will also be presented in the exclusive setting of the “blue motion night” at boot Düsseldorf in January. Unfortunately, this could not take place live due to the pandemic in the past two years. This makes the public presentation of the award all the more dear to our hearts. It has become a permanent fixture in the ranks of campaigns for marine conservation. And as long as the waters and marine habitats are in danger, we will continue to work for their protection.”

The winner of the 2022 “ocean tribute” award is the French company HelioRec, Petros Michelidakis announced in April in a film about the award ceremony, which can be seen at https://oceantributeaward.boot.de/en/Home. Together with Frank Schweikert, Executive Director of the German Maritime Foundation, he describes why both the jury and the public voted for HelioRec from Nantes: “The French company scores with its environmentally friendly electric charging stations (ECS) for the maritime sector based on floating solar power plants. Unused water is converted into a clean energy source through a floating offshore solar cell system. The main objectives of the project are to save land area in a port area, generate a clean energy source, establish fast charging stations for electric vehicles and electric boats in the port, and realize new digital services for data prediction and optimization. Other concepts of the project are fast charging stations for electric vehicles and electric boats in the port. Another goal is the circular economy approach: recycled plastic is used to make floating systems, reducing system costs and carbon footprint.”

Thousands of sport diving enthusiasts traveled from all over California and surrounding states to Long Beach, California, May 14-15 for the 35th consumer scuba diving exposition, the largest dive-specific show in the U.S.

“The dive business has come up for air after two Covid years,” says Mark Young, show director.

“Show attendance in 2022 was comparable to our pre-pandemic numbers, which is a testament to divers’ pent-up demand to resume exploring the wonders of the underwater world.”

First to welcome Scuba Show back were Chris and Katie Seay of San Diego, husband and wife divers who lined up three hours early on day one, then were first in line for day two. “We didn’t want to miss out, especially with fun prizes for early arrivals being offered,” Chris said.

Rewarded a pair of dive lights, Chris added, “We’re so happy the show has returned.”

Showgoers were treated to 260 product and destination exhibitors; 72 informative seminars focused on safety, photography, destination travel, and gear maintenance; and show specials offering savings on land and liveaboard dive yacht packages.

In an effort to attract the next generation of divers, kids were invited to pose for green screen photos and inside a shark cage; learn about becoming scuba certified; participate in dive-related arts and crafts; and meet live mermaids and Miss Scuba Queen USA.

“The Scuba Show is an outstanding way to welcome so many new divers and that’s what we’re here for,” says exhibitor Sven E. Harms, vice president of SeaLife based in Moorestown, N.J., whose products include waterproof underwater cases for smartphones.

EMMY award-winning cinematographer Marty Snyderman won the Covid-postponed 2020 California Scuba Service Award; Leslie Leaney, executive director of the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame, was honored with the 2022 award.

Scuba Show 2022 Highlights

Attendees learned practically everything they needed to know about scuba diving all under one roof. Highlights include:

 • Dive for Free – The Aquarium of the Pacific was recruiting volunteers to hand feed their fish, sharks and eels, and clean tanks while they dived for free. (http://www.aquariumvolunteers.org)
 • Adaptive Scuba – The Dive Heart Foundation, based in Downers Grove, Illinois, was promoting the premiere of Adapting to Dive, by Los Angeles filmmaker David Marsh who embarked on a life-changing journey with a group of adaptive scuba divers while they experienced zero gravity. (Watch the trailer: http://www.diveheart.org).
 • Looking for Scuba Queens – Scuba Queen USA, considered the Miss America of scuba diving, was recruiting women ages 18 to 35 to become ambassadors for the ocean. (http://www.scubaqueenusa.com)
 • Mermaid Tails – CapeCali, Laguna Beach, California, launched its new mermaid tail and divewear styles. “These garments are not just for mermaids sitting pretty on a rock – they are functional mermaid tails for the sport of mermaiding,” says Kim Deichmann, co-founder. (http://www.capecali.com)
 • Polar Expeditions – Experienced divers were invited to dive the Arctic or Antarctic by Henrik Enckell of Oceanwide Expeditions. On the Antarctic peninsula, he explained, “There are no waves, no current, no wind when we go out, but the weather can change in an instant.” (http://www.oceanwide-expeditions.com)
 • The Four Ps – Diving safety consultant Dan Orr, former president of Divers Alert Network (DAN), reminded his seminar audience of the four Ps of diving safety: Plan, Prepare, Practice, and Perform. He advises divers over age 45 to take care of their health and schedule annual physicals from physicians familiar with diving. “Safe divers never waste learning from a mistake,” he says. (http://www.wisedivers.com)
 • Why Divers Die – Captain John Kades of the L.A. County Coroner’s Office, echoed Orr’s advice. Describing local dive fatalities from 2021, Kades said, “forty percent of scuba fatalities are due to medical complications while diving.”
 • Marine life and interactions – Seminars focused on kelp restoration, getting close to marine life, tracking giant sea bass, cephalopods, and more.

The next Scuba Show will be held at the Long Beach Convention Center on June 3 to 4, 2023.

The planning for exhibitor registrations for boot Düsseldorf 2023 is in full swing. And now, in May, the team around Project Director Petros Michelidakis is back in the starting blocks. Interested companies, associations and organizers can register for the upcoming boot from January 21 – 29, 2023 at https://www.boot.com/2330.

Michelidakis: “The interest in the industry is very high. We have had good discussions with companies from all areas of water sports in recent weeks and are sensing very good demand. The manufacturers lack the direct presentation of their boats and yachts in front of a knowledgeable and interested audience as is usual in Düsseldorf. With the new campaign “my business starts at boot 2023″ we present ourselves as a responsible partner of the water sports industry. Because Düsseldorf offers its exhibitors the unique opportunity to present themselves together with other leading international top brands, embedded in a sophisticated supporting program, and thus be part of the world’s leading trade fair for water sports.”

There is a joyful mood and a hard-working atmosphere in the Düsseldorf team. In the team, Arne von Heimendahl is responsible for all boats and yachts at the fair. Lena Beckmann looks after equipment and accessories, diving, Destination Seaside (tourism), charter and houseboats. Caroline Mühl is the contact person for surfing, canoe/kayak, water pixel world, sport fishing, “love your ocean” and maritime art. Lara Hannappel is the expert for all special shows and stages. Barbara Klein has the new “blue innovation dock” (bid) in her portfolio. They are on hand to offer advice and assistance to all interested parties and help with individual enquiries.

The colleagues in the boot marketing team are also in an optimistic mood for 2023. They are working on the further optimization of the social media channels with a fresh breeze. The aim is to keep https://www.boot.club/en/Home/boot.club up-to-date for its 155,000 members and to feed it with the latest trends and information on water sports.

boot Düsseldorf also has its finger on the pulse of its fans in the various social media channels from linkedin to facebook and instagram with the latest contributions from the industry and stories about exciting moments in sailing, boating, diving or surfing. The monthly podcast on www.boot.com also attracts visitors with entertaining talks with industry insiders on current topics and innovations.

“With these digital offers for our exhibitors and visitors, we are in the conversation and in the focus of the industry 365 days a year and can continuously increase the anticipation there for the event in Düsseldorf. The highlight of the year is, of course, the period from January 21 – 29, 2023 in our exhibition halls”, says Petros Michelidakis and adds “we know that the preparation will not be easy in the current, difficult environment. That’s why it’s so important for us to work in partnership with our international customers and to target new prospects. That is why I am calling on companies: Please register now. The earlier you reserve your stand, the more choices you have in size and design.”

Why Do We Attend Diving Talks 2022?

Is it the Speakers? The Talks? The Exhibition and Equipment Trials? Or is it the venue – Tróia?

All those reasons impact one’s decision, but it is pretty evident that one of the main reasons is the Talks, the content each Speaker will share.

However, this year DIVING talks Organisation wants to go a bit further. The program will feature a different type of Panel.

Diving Talks 2022

Imagine having PADI, SDI and SSI in the same room to discuss the future of teaching in diving? This would be an exciting debate, wouldn’t it?

Imagine no more. Suppose you are an Instructor or simply a curious diver. In that case, this will be the right spot to listen to Mark Caney, Mark Powell and Jean Claude Monachon talking about diving through the perspective of the three biggest agencies: PADI, SDI and SSI.

Mark Caney, PADI – Professional Association of Diving Instructors’ Industry Relations and Training Executive, is President of the European Underwater Federation, President of the Rebreather Training Council and President of the World Recreational Scuba Training Council.

Mark Powell is the SDI – Scuba Diving International Director of Global Development

Jean Claude Monachon is SSI – Scuba Schools International Vice-President, International Business Development & Marketing.
