Blue O Two Becomes Latest Victim of COVID and Enters Administration

COVID has been devastating in all areas of the scuba diving industry. Whilst some manufacturers have seen an increase in sales as people chose the lengthy surface interval to upgrade their equipment, ready for whenever the time came to get back into the water, the majority of the industry as suffered.

It is safe to say that the section of the diving industry hit the hardest by the pandemic has been the tourism sector. With people unable to travel anywhere to dive for more than 18 months, the effects have been huge.

This week sees one of the great names in the liveaboard industry, blue o two (as Blue O2 Ltd) entering administration.

“Covid-19 presented us with the greatest challenge in 18 years of trading. The UK has had the most stringent of travel restrictions in place. They have been consistently changing, hard to understand, and made it almost impossible to deliver what you all love doing the most – diving” said the official statement from blue o two.

The statement continued, “Recently, our ATOL license was renewed by the CAA – the travel industry regulator. Although we were granted a new license to provide packages including flights, the CAA, with consumers best interests in mind, imposed conditions on Blue 02 Limited’s ATOL license. This, as well as refunding many millions of £s, has made it difficult for the Directors to see a way forward for Blue 02 Ltd which protects the interests of our customers in the current COVID climate. Given the financial damage caused by the pandemic, and despite our relentless best efforts to save Blue 02 Ltd, unfortunately, and with regret, the decision was made to cease trading on 15th November 2021.”

But this does not seem to be the end of this well known brand.

So we are delighted to say that the Blue O Two brand lives on under Scuba Tours Worldwide Limited – which now trades as Blue O Two. We will continue to operate and provide scuba diving liveaboard holidays with the same devoted team of people.

Reef-World’s Conservation Impact Remains Strong Despite Global Pandemic

Reef-World’s annual report reveals tangible conservation impact despite COVID-19 disruptions

New figures out today reveal that The Reef-World Foundation – international coordinator of the UN Environment Programme’s Green Fins initiative – certified more dive shops and reached more travellers with its conservation messaging than the previous year, despite disruptions to fieldwork caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reef-World’s annual report, released today, revealed the charity reached 115,000+ travellers with its information on environmental best practice through its Green Fins initiative during its 2019–20 reporting period; up from the 110,000 travellers reached during 2018–19. With 115 dive centres assessed in 31 diving hotspots across 11 countries (compared to 98 operators in 10 countries the previous year), the number of active members increased 42% from 118 to 168.

As well as attracting new members, the programme continues to demonstrate its success in helping marine tourism operators reduce their direct, local impact on coral reefs; with data showing an average 20% reduction in environmental impact among members.

While implementation work was unable to take place during three months of the year, due to the global pandemic, the reduction in the number of dive staff trained in person was just 6.5% (1,870+ in 2019–20 compared to 2,000+ in 2018–19). However, digital innovations have enabled the charity to continue educating dive professionals around the world, no matter their location. Over 1,140 dive professionals signed up to the Green Fins Dive Guide e-Course: a unique online course which enables individual dive professionals to become Green Fins certified.

Key projects included: the launch of the Dive Guide e-Course Scholarship Fund to help scuba diving guides receive vital environmental certification; the nationwide rollout of Green Fins Egypt in partnership with the Chamber of Diving & Watersports (CDWS); a new initiative to help protect coral reefs in the Dominican Republic in partnership with the TUI Care Foundation; and creating new resources to support marine tourism operators around the world in their efforts to prioritise sustainability despite the COVID-19 pandemic. What’s more, the charity also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), which shall remain in effect until December 2025, to strengthen the framework of cooperation between the two organisations for their joint international coordination of the Green Fins initiative.Anne Paranjoti, Founder of The Reef-World Foundation, said: “When UNEP asked me to create a framework for Green Fins back in the 1990s, I wanted to create something that would be open to all and provide a role for anyone that wanted to do something to protect the natural world around us. Today, the Green Fins tools and resources are still free for all wishing to join and provide a framework for anyone that would like to contribute and be part of a wider active community of conservators. The model underpinning Green Fins is one that allows us all to have a role – no matter how small – in protecting the natural environment and demonstrate actions that truly promote core values and reach beyond a limited view of sustainability. The outcome is, thus, enriched lives for all and sustainability of our beautiful natural resources.”

JJ Harvey, Director at The Reef-World Foundation, said: “Like many other charities and businesses across the travel industry, Reef-World has faced a tough time this year. Not only has the pandemic impacted our ability to conduct our environmental fieldwork but we also lost a valued mentor in the passing of our Trustee Andrea Leeman. Andy was as determined and strong-willed as the toughest out there and she would have been so proud of the conservation impact we’ve achieved despite COVID setbacks. As we move into a new normal, we’re determined to ensure sustainability remains a priority across the marine tourism industry. There are challenges ahead but we’re absolutely dedicated to protecting our precious marine ecosystems for the benefit of the local community, potential visitors, visitors and future generations.”

Chloe Harvey, Director at The Reef-World Foundation, added: “What a year it’s been – and we couldn’t have done it without you all! The generous donations and support from our partners and the general public have inspired us to continue the battle to protect our coral reefs around the world. We’d like to thank everyone for their efforts over the past year and are excited to work with you to forge a stronger path for sustainable tourism in the future. There’s much more to be done and the future is uncertain but, together, we can make sustainable diving the social norm.”

With 33 government and NGO staff trained to run the network at a national level, Green Fins now has 82 active assessors; one quarter (26%) of whom are female. The Green Fins national teams are looking forward to resuming training and assessments as soon as it is possible and safe to do so. In addition, plans for Green Fins’ expansion into Guam, Timor-Leste, Japan, Costa Rica and Colombia are in place for when travel opens up again.

Terry Cole wins Bahamas trip for £10

Car and coach mechanic Terry Cole, 58, from Northampton is looking forward to jetting off to The Bahamas for seven nights on board M/V Bahamas Master for just £10! Terry scooped the top prize in a lottery competition run by Blue O Two to support Bite-Back Shark & Marine Conservation.

While more than 880 tickets were sold for a chance to secure the £6,500 trip of a lifetime to The Bahamas on a shark and dolphin safari, there could only be one winner.

TV presenter and expedition leader, Monty Halls, revealed the winning ticket at DIVE 2019 at the NEC in Birmingham.

Terry said, “When I found out that I’d won, I could barely believe it. It’s a dream come true. I’ve been diving for nearly 15 years but never in The Bahamas. I’m expecting some buddies to let me know they’re free to join me next August.”

But Terry was quick to say that they’d be out of luck. Instead he’s decided to take his wife, Sue, on the trip. Although she isn’t a diver, Sue is looking forward to snorkelling on the reefs and relaxing in the luxurious surroundings of The Bahamas.

Marketing Manager for Blue O Two, Laura Greenland, said, “This competition has been so much fun. Not only does it clearly mark The Bahamas as a bucket-list destination, it demonstrates that our passion for supporting sharks and marine conservation is matched by our clients. Everyone at Blue O Two is excited for Terry and Sue, and a little bit jealous too.”

Terry is a veteran of Blue O Two holidays, having dived with them on several occasions in Egypt.

Blue O Two Announcement on Thomas Cook Collapse

On 23^rd September 2019, Thomas Cook Group were placed into administration.

Unfortunately, Blue O Two has a substantial number of customers affected by the collapse of the group, which includes Thomas Cook Airlines.

Thomas Cook Airlines were due to be the supplier of the flight segment of travel on a large proportion of upcoming liveaboard holidays to the Red Sea.

The team at Blue O Two are now working as quickly as possible to identify solutions where alternative travel arrangements may be required. They will be contacting customers in chronological order, by departure date.

Blue O Two are also liaising closely with Thomas Cook Group and the Civil Aviation Authority to make suitable arrangements for the repatriation of any guests currently overseas.

Whilst they understand that customers may be concerned by this news, they are asking for patience at this difficult time.

Blue O Two pledge to raise $15,000 for the Hurricane Dorian relief aid

Two weeks ago, the Category 5 Hurricane Dorian made landfall in The Bahamas; the strongest to ever hit the region. The impact has been devastating. There are now over 50 confirmed fatalities, with 1,300 people still listed as missing.

When Hurricane Dorian hit the north of The Bahamas on 1^st September 2019, wind speed reached up to 185mph (298km/h). The main towns were flooded by storm surges, metres above normal sea levels. The powerful winds and water ripped houses apart, tore boats from moorings and dragged vehicles and debris across the islands.

Dorian’s slow progress (only 1mph at times) concentrated the storm over the islands, increasing the extent of the damage. It’s the fifth Atlantic hurricane to reach the highest category in the last four years.

On 12^th September 2019, Blue O Two are pledged to raise $15,000 to aid the relief efforts in The Bahamas. We plan to purchase a Watermaker, with all remaining monies donated to Bahamian charitable organisations and local businesses.

To achieve this fundraising target:

£5,000 has already been donated by Blue O Two’s Directors & Investors
We can now accept donations from our customers. Any donations made will be matched by Blue O Two, up to a value of $200 per transaction.
Some upcoming trips are affected by this disaster aboard M/V Bahamas Master. For all customers choosing to rebook for a later date in The Bahamas (rather than cancelling), we will be donating $200 towards our target.
Our staff are being actively encouraged to suggest fundraising ideas – more on this to follow.

What else can you be doing?

MAKE A DONATION. Even if you’re travelling with us elsewhere, we’re matching every single donation pledged, up to $200 per transaction.
KEEP BOOKING HOLIDAYS. The Bahamas has already been decimated. The worst thing to happen now for the local economy is for tourism to falter too. Whether you come diving with us, or book with another tour operator, we really don’t mind. They WILL rebuild, and they need visitors to keep coming next year.

blue o two is delighted to announce that single-use plastic water bottles will be removed from their Red Sea fleet vessels as of 7^th May 2018.

Approximately 6.28 billion household plastic bottles are not recycled every year in the UK and at least 8 million tons of plastic enters the oceans annually. An estimated 50% of sea turtles have consumed plastic and sadly, the list of fish species that have been documented with plastic in or around their bodies is constantly growing.

These shocking statistics have led blue o two to make the decision to remove all 500ml personal water bottles and 1.5L shared meal water bottles from all sailings in the Red Sea.

Customers are invited to become part of the solution in fighting the growing plastic problem, and are encouraged to bring their own personal water bottle for their holiday. However, reusable water bottles are also available to purchase on board if required.

The global brand alliance comprising blue o two, Master Liveaboards, Siren Fleet and The Junk have made a collective pledge that all liveaboards within the fleet will be completely single-use plastic free by the end of 2019. The recent banning of plastic straws across the entire fleet, and the removal of single-use plastic water bottles in the Red Sea are just some of the first steps in this rapidly expanding environmental policy.

As divers in particular are aware, plastics in the environment are incredibly difficult to manage and often end up in waterways and oceans. This is not only unsightly but it is thought that plastics in the ocean are killing upwards of a million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals each year. These figures are rising and do not count other marine animals or, disturbingly, the much larger number of animals that are simply not found after death.Working together as part of the global alliance with Siren Fleet, The Junk “June Hong Chian Lee” and blue o two, Master Liveaboards will be working with local organisations in destinations, suppliers, NGO’s, government organisations, and many others in order to reach our goal across all vessels, local offices, and head offices.

This is of course an enormous project and the banning of straws recently across all alliance vessels was only the first tiny step in this process. Updates on both our successes and challenges will be made regularly as the alliance moves forwards. As an alliance, we lead the way in the diving liveaboard industry to a cleaner environment for everyone.

The aim of Project Shark: Galapagos is to highlight the global issues facing sharks, with a Galapagos focus, as well as enjoying some of the most exciting dive sites the Galapagos Islands have to offer. The week will involve close encounters with sharks, rays and whale sharks (although these sightings cannot be guaranteed) with the possibility to observe them in their natural habitat.

As the endangered species list around the globe continues to grow, it is vital for those who are actively interested in the preservation of our marine environments and inhabitants to be given an opportunity to learn about efforts to protect our marine species. The Project Shark: Galapagos itinerary allows divers the unique opportunity to encounter endangered species in their own environment, providing an unparalleled opportunity to study their natural behaviour and aid future conservation efforts in support of marine conservation project with the Galapagos Conservation Trust. Dr Elke Bojanowski will conduct seminars giving divers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the biology and behaviour of sharks.

While humans may find the water temperature a bit cooler and the currents a bit stronger, sharks tend to love these conditions. Schools of scalloped hammerheads are commonly seen, with a further 32 species of sharks known to frequent these waters, including whale sharks!

Project Shark is back! blue o two are extremely excited to announce a brand new Fiji itinerary from 2019.

Dive into tropical waters with flourishing shark populations on their brand new itinerary, Project Shark: Fiji. The aim of Project Shark is to highlight the global issues facing sharks, with a Fijian focus, as well as enjoying some of the most exciting dive sites that Fiji has to offer. Project Shark in Fiji will include a focus on manta rays as they can also be seen in this destination and are closely related to sharks. Encounters with endangered species allows divers to add a greater purpose to their liveaboard holiday.

On board the beautiful S/Y Fiji Siren, this 10 night trip departing from the Darling family’s Volivoli Beach Resort on Vita Levu takes divers through the Bligh Waters. This itinerary will involve close encounters with sharks, with the possibility of diving with manta rays. Divers will be joined on board for the duration of this trip by our experienced blue o two Project Shark trip host, Dr Elke Bojanowski.

Project Shark is a perfect trip for anyone who has an active interest in the preservation of the marine environment. Divers will not only enjoy fantastic diving with some of the most fascinating pelagic animals on the planet, but will learn about globally endangered marine species and what, as divers, they can do to aid their protection.
